[1890-1939] Artist.

He was the illegitimate son of Mary Hannah Shoesmith, the daughter of Denton Shoesmith.

Born in Halifax.

Baptised at All Saints' Church, Salterhebble [9th October 1890].

He grew up in Blackpool.

He became a Conway Cadet on HMS Conway at Liverpool [1906]. He went to sea and joined the Royal Mail Line as a junior officer [1909]

He was a mariner (merchant shipping) staying at 1 Terminus Terrace, Southampton [1911] / awarded Certificate of Competency as Second Mate of a Foreign-going Steamship, at Liverpool [6th October 1911] / 2nd Officer [1916] / awarded Certificate of Competency as Master for Foreign-going Steamships only [19th October 1917] / Chief Officer.

He continued drawing and painting whilst travelling the world with the Royal Mail Line and Southern Railways.

In 1918, he left the Navy to become a full-time painter and commercial artist. He produced many advertising posters for Royal Mail Line and for Thomas Forman who published Cunard's famous posters, creating some of their best-known images.

He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters & Watercoulourers & the British Society of Poster Designers.

In 1930, First Lord Vestey owner of the Blue Star Line had commissioned Shoesmith to paint a series of murals depicting the English victory of 1588 over the Spanish Armada for the dining room of his home Kingswood in Dulwich.

On 18th April 1916, he married Sarah Ritchie [1887-19??] at Hendon

[1861-1914] Son of Joe Shoesmith.

He was a pupil at a school at South Shore, Blackpool [1871] / a solicitor's articled clerk [1881] / a solicitor [1891] / a solicitor of Addington House, Halifax [1897] / a solicitor [1901, 1911, 1913].

On 22nd September 1897, he married Laura Kershaw [1870-1920].

On 2nd November 1820, he married Margaret (Peggy) Ashworth [1796-18??].


Margaret, of Colne, was the daughter of George Ashworth.

She was a farmer of 20 acres [1871]

In [Q2] 1891, he married (1) Martha Riley in Halifax.
