He was injured – concussion of the brain, 6 or 8 scalp wounds, and many cuts about the hand – in the Pye Nest Tram Disaster of 15th October 1907, and died 4 days later in the Royal Halifax Infirmary.

He was buried at Sowerby Bridge Cemetery

He was killed in action at Ypres Salient [20th September 1917] (aged 32).

He was buried at Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium. [4 V F 5].

He was a woollen piecer [1911] / employed by Joseph Brearley & Sons.

He joined the 4th Battalion, West Riding Regiment (Territorials)  [September 1912].

During World War I, he was embodied [5th August 1914].

He was sent to France [April 1915].

He was promoted to Corporal in February 1916.

He was awarded the Military Medal [November 1916].

He was promoted to Sergeant [August 1917].

He was a Sergeant Major when he was demobbed [March 1919] (aged 24).

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal [1920]


For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Villers-en-Caulhies on 11th to 12th October 1918, whilst in command of a section.

He took his men forward and brought back wounded to medical assistance, working all day under heavy shell and machine gun fire. Throughout all operations he set his men a splendid example of courage and determination

He was educated at Bradford Grammar School, a senior partner in Thornton, Hannam & Marshall, the chairman of Craven, Pearson & Company Limited, a director of the Bradford Dyers' Association, and a director of the Bradford Coal Merchants' and Consumers' Association

In 1888, he married Isabella Stead [1862-19??] from Wortley, Leeds, at Bradford.

During World War I, he enlisted [November 1914], and served as a Private with the 1st/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was injured by a sniper at Glimpse Cott sector, Ypres whilst looking over the parapet to see the result of a grenade, and died in hospital [13th August 1915] (aged 20).

He was buried at Hospital Farm Cemetery, Belgium. [B 19].

He is remembered on Brighouse War Memorial, on Rastrick War Memorial, on Elland War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Saint Mary the Virgin, Elland.

His brother Reginald also died in the War and brother Harry was injured

Thornton Square in Brighouse is named for him, and he presented the town with the clock on the municipal offices, Thornton Square which was popularly known as Owd Bob and Bob Thornton's.

He gave a fire engine to the town. This was badly damaged in 19?? when a building fell on it whilst attending a fire in Atlas Mill Road.

He died at home [26th October 1918].

He was buried at Rastrick Cemetery.

About 11:00 pm on the evening of 19th December 1896, he and his wife, Fanny, were walking to Halifax railway station on their way back home to Elland, when they saw 2 policemen – employees of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company – apprehending a man whom they alleged to be drunk. Mr Thornton told Hughes, one of the policemen, that he did not believe the man was drunk and that he ought to let him go. As Mr and Mrs Thornton were walking to the Booking Office, Hughes arrested them both and placed them in the cells at Halifax Police Station.

On the 21st December, Mr and Mrs Thornton were charged with wilfully obstructing Hughes in the discharge of his duty. The case was dismissed.

In August 1897, 2 cases were brought for false imprisonment and malicious prosecution: Mrs Fanny Thornton vs the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company and Sidney Thornton vs the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company.

The Jury found for the plaintiffs, awarding £200 damages to Mrs Thornton and £150 damages to Mr Thornton

[1896-1916] Son of Sydney Thornton of Manaos, Elland.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died 21st September 1916 (aged 20).

He was buried at Elland Cemetery [C 55].

He is remembered on Elland War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Elland Constitutional Club

He married Mary [1836-1906] from Halifax.

Thornton, Rev Timothy Martin
[1957-] He was educated at Southampton University and King's College London before becoming Curate at Todmorden and Priest in charge at Walsden.

He subsequently served as Bishop of Sherborne and Bishop of Truro

On 1st August 1807, he was working in Hull when he and 2 others went on a pleasure trip on the Humber. They were larking about, when the boat overturned and they all drowned.

He was a director of several companies, including Shipley Tank Company Limited, South Yorkshire & Derbyshire Gas Company, Tanks & Drums Limited (of Bradford), Wentworth Silkstone Collieries Limited, and Yorkshire Coal & Trading Company Limited

On 24th October 1917, he married Hilda Croft at Pudsey. Children:

He was a turner's clerk [1863].

[1891-1918] Son of Mark Thornton of 9 Dickens Street, West Bowling, Bradford.

In [Q4] 1911, he married Beatrice Gunningham in Bradford.

During World War I, he served as a Gunner with A Battery 276th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

He died 18th April 1918 (aged 27).

He was buried at Fouquières Churchyard Extension, France [II G 3].

In [Q2] 1920, Beatrice married Mr Fielding in Halifax.

They lived at 3 Lower Brockholes, Ogden, Halifax
