He had an estate of 400 a year and made no will, was buried on Monday following at Leeds

During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant with 591 Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers.

He served in India & Burma, and survived typhoid fever. He served in Palestine (where he gained his para wings), and in Italy.

He was killed in Belgium [17th January 1945] (aged 29).

He was buried at the Hotton War Cemetery, Luxembourg [XII A 3].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on Heath Grammar School Memorial Gates, and on the Memorial at Rishworth School

Born in Hebden Bridge.

In 1862, with his brother Edwin, he established a printing business and then expanded into the manufacture of printing machinery.

They published the Hebden Chronicle.

Their Arab printing machine was used throughout the world.

In 1891, he became a councillor for Halifax. As a councillor, he was associated with the Walshaw Dean Reservoir and St Luke's Hospital. He was Mayor of Halifax [1902-1904]

On 1st February 1896, he gave Hebden Bridge its first ambulance. The horse-drawn vehicle was replaced by a motor ambulance in 1924

He married Elizabeth Thomson [b 1845] from Dumfries, Scotland.

Wade, Matthew
[18??-18??] Of Midgley.

He was a policeman in Halifax / a wool sorter [1861].

On 28th April 1861, he was one of a group drinking at the T' Cat i' th' Well, Luddenden Dean, and a quarrel broke out. When he left the pub around 11:00 pm, he and James Calvert began wrestling, during the course of which Calvert broke his leg. Knowing of the injury, Wade kicked the limb, and mortification set in.

Calvert died 5th May 1861.

The Coroner's Jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against Wade, and he was committed to York for trial at the Assizes.

At the Yorkshire Summer Assizes [July 1861], the prosecution declined to offer any evidence against Wade, and the case was discharged

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

Wade, Michael John
[1945-2015] Son of Marjorie & Walter Wade.

He was Financial Director at Wade's (Halifax) Limited

Wade, Michael Joseph
[1845-1???] A clerk. He had served 4 years' penal servitude for robbery from the Irish Court of Chancery.

In 1866, he was charged with burglary at the temperance hotel kept by Grace Fielden at Todmorden – could this be Fielden Temperance Hotel & Coffee Tavern?

Whilst he was being held at Hebden Bridge lockup he wrote a long poem describing the temptation which led him to commit the robbery.

At his trial, he told the jury that he was subject to fits of temporary insanity.

When the jury returned a verdict of Guilty, he handed another poem to the judge. The judge said that

it was painful to see a young man imbued with superior talent in such a position

He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour. Wade asked the judge

Will you all me pen, ink and paper in prison?

to which he was told

I have nothing to do with that. It will have to be determined by the prison regulation

Wade, Ralph
[1910-2003] Brighouse-born writer. Despite aspirations to be writer, he started work at a Brighouse fruiterer. He joined a writers' circle in Huddersfield and help set up another in Brighouse. During World War II, he sent a series of articles to the Brighouse Echo.

In 1958, he began to write under the pen-name Rowan.

From November 1976 until 1985, he wrote a weekly local-history column – entitled Those were the days and Random Comments – for the Brighouse Echo. Some of the articles were published by the Brighouse Echo in 2 slim volumes entitled Those were the days [1979]

During World War II, he served as a Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force.

He died 17th June 1944 (aged 21).

Wade, William Ewart Gladstone
[1898-1917] Son of Benjamin Wade.

Born in Halifax.

During World War I, William enlisted [7th October 1914], giving his name as Ewart Wade and his age as 19 years and 4 months (he was actually 16 years and 4 months); he gave his next of kin as Benjamin Wade of 173 Spring Hall Lane. He served as a Private with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in action [26th November 1917].

He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Nord France [6 & 7], on the Memorial at Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Pellon Baptist Church, and on the Memorial at Campbell Gas Engine Company Limited

Wade, William Thomas
[18??-19??]

In [Q3] 1873, he married Susannah Woodhead [18??-19??] in Todmorden.

The family lived at Walsden

Wade, Willie
[1892-1918] Son of William Thomas Wade.

Of Todmorden.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment.

He died 19th April 1918 (aged 26).

He was buried at the Pernes British Cemetery, France [I C 13].

He is remembered in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance
