On 28th April 1861, he was one of a group drinking at the T' Cat i' th' Well, Luddenden Dean, and a quarrel broke out.
When he left the pub around 11:00 pm, he and James Calvert
began wrestling, during the course of which Calvert broke his
leg.
Knowing of the injury, Wade kicked the limb, and mortification
set in.
Calvert died 5th May 1861.
The Coroner's Jury returned a verdict of manslaughter
against Wade, and he was committed to York for trial at the
Assizes.
At the Yorkshire Summer Assizes [July 1861], the prosecution declined
to offer any evidence against Wade, and the case was discharged

In 1866, he was charged with burglary at the temperance hotel kept
by Grace Fielden at Todmorden – could this be Fielden Temperance Hotel & Coffee Tavern?
Whilst he was being held at Hebden Bridge lockup he wrote a long poem
describing the temptation which led him to commit the robbery.
At his trial, he told the jury that he was subject to fits of
temporary insanity.
When the jury returned a verdict of Guilty, he handed another
poem to the judge.
The judge said that
He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour.
