Upper Saltonstall

Arthur Comfort Drawing

A drawing of the interior of Upper Saltonstall, taken from Arthur Comfort's series In & About Our Old Homes

At Upper Saltonstall, there are four ancient homesteads, each possessing its grange of barn. The most interesting of these is Upper Saltonstall Old Hall, erected probably about the year 1640 by Gilbert Deane, of Saltonstall. Close by stands the homestead called Wade Farm or Lane Ends which, with the barn and mistal, present features of a very remarkable character. Here may be seen "Old England" in profusion, in the shape of great oaken beams and pillars, and a well-preserved stone fireplace. Many relics from the barn have been placed in the Halifax museum
