The novel Emma was written by Charlotte Brontë. It was published posthumously in 1860.
Only 2 chapters of 19 pages survive. The material was based on her abandoned novel Ashworth.
In 1854, Charlotte started, but did not complete, the novel. She probably broke off the writing on account of her marriage. When she told Mr Nicholls about it, he said that it could be accused of repetition: yet another story about a teacher at a school, and she put it away.
In 1860, the unfinished novel – with an introduction by Thackeray – was published posthumously in the Cornhill Magazine by Smith, Elder & Company.
The story has been completed and published by other authors.
A completed version of the novel by Clare Boylan was published as Emma Brown in September 2003 [ISBN: 0316725471]
