John Crossley JP was the third son of John Crossley.
He was senior partner in John Crossley & Sons [from 1837] and Chairman [1864-1877].
On 7th May 1839, he married (1) Anne Kitchenman Child [18??-1846].

His wife died shortly after giving birth to their daughter Anne.
On 7th November 1847, he married (2) Sarah.

He was Mayor of Halifax [1849-1851] and [1861-1863]
He was MP for Halifax [1874-1877], replacing Edward Akroyd who had moved from the Liberals towards the Conservatives.
He owned the Halifax Courier for a time.
He was Deacon at Square Congregational Church [from 1836 until his death].
On April 10th 1860, he laid the corner stone of the Wicker Congregational Schools, Sheffield.
On 25th August 1873, as he was being driven to the works at Dean Clough, the horse took fright, and the carriage struck a lamp-post and overturned. Crossley was thrown out, and his head struck the post and then the ground with great violence. He was carried off in an insensible condition.
He left Halifax in 1877 on account of his health and his reduced circumstances.
He lived for a time in Putney.
He was the last surviving brother and died
somewhat suddenly from heart disease
whilst staying with the Marchetti's at Broomfield, Halifax [16th April 1879].
He was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot Number 147].
Probate records show that he left a personal estate valued at under £8,000.
His will was proved by son Louis John.

Messrs John Crossley & Sons Limited having discontinued the retail business, Mrs John Crossley hopes that her Manager's experience of 40 years employed by the firm, 14 of which he served in the Retail Warehouse, will guarantee that he is competent to execute all orders entrusted to her in a satisfactory manner and at the most moderate price and she takes this opportunity to assure those who may favour her with their patronage that her Manager will devote himself to the efficient and prompt execution of all orders with which she may be favoured. Mrs John Crossley begs to say that all orders entrusted to her for Measuring Rooms, Fitting Carpets etc., will be executed with promptitude |
