George Whiteley

[1818-1890]


George Whiteley was born in Halifax, the son of Charles Whiteley.

Like other members of the family, he became a hatter.

He and his brother, Robert, took over the family business at Whiteley's Hat Shop in Corn Market, Halifax.

In 1842, their partnership was dissolved and Robert continued on his own.

Shortly afterwards, George took over the business of his late brother, Charles Frederick, in Bradford. The business was at Ivegate, Bradford [1845, 1847].

On 22nd July 1840, he married (1) Marianne Chadwick [1821-1868] in Halifax.


Marianne Chadwick was the daughter of a Bradford manufacturer

  7. Chadwick Marshall [b 1850] who married [1871] Elizabeth Faulkhead in Australia
  8. Marian [b 1855] who died in infancy

The family lived at

In 1852, the family emigrated to Australia aboard the El Dorado, following George's brother-in-law, Henry Hitchen, who went to work in the goldfields in 1849.

George worked as a hatter for a time, and then dabbled unsuccessfully in gold mining, In 1856, he was charged with deserting his wife and children.

Around 1868, George and Marianne returned to England. It is said that Marianne died on the journey.

In 1870, he married (2) Alice Holdsworth at St Thomas the Apostle, Claremount.


Alice was the daughter of Samuel Holdsworth
 

Children:

  1. Sarah Emma [b 1871] who married [1892] William Holgate [1865-19??] in Liverpool

The family lived at with Alice's father at Staups House, Shibden [1871].

He died of pneumonia [5th November 1890].

He left an estate valued at £1450 and comprising several properties in the district. He was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot Number 309] with his sisters, Harriet Irvin and Susannah, and in the grave next to his brother, Robert
