Notoriously steep road up the hillside from the northern end of North Bridge, and one of the old routes northwards out of Halifax to Bradford – by way of Swales Moor and Catherine Slack.

  • that a lady who lived there in Victorian times was known for her home-made raspberry jam
  • that there was a dye-house there and the water from the dyeing of red military uniforms often flowed down the alley

Another possibility is that it is a form of Routine Row, referring to the Catholic ritual of carrying the elements of the Mass around the streets near the church

Turnpike constructed around 1760 under an act of 1735. It came via Blackstone Edge. This was the main road through Sowerby Bridge.

There are a great many properties with names like Bairstow's Buildings, Clough's Court, Hanson's Passage, Richardson's Row Walker's Square and Nichol's Yard.

Many of these were slums and poorer housing from the 19th century, possibly built by a mill-owner for his workers. Later offices and administrative buildings were given similar names, such as Princess Buildings.
