G. Webster & Sons of Halifax, the well-known grocers
and provision merchants in Halifax celebrated centenary
- Wednesday, 1st January 1919:
Belgian refugees in Halifax presented with an
illuminated address as a farewell token
- Friday, 3rd January 1919:
Heavy snowstorm at Todmorden caused unprecedented
havoc. The town was virtually isolated
- Saturday, 4th January 1919:
Hundreds of telephones in Halifax out of action because
of heavy snow. Wires broken everywhere
- Wednesday, 5th February 1919:
The Mayor unveiled a granite water fountain at the
Haley Hill Mills, Halifax, of William Hanson & Company, to the
memory of employees who left the firm for military service
- Saturday, 1st March 1919:
Boothroyd military hospital, Brighouse, closed after
three years during which time 1,200 wounded soldiers were treated
- Monday, 10th March 1919:
Sowerby Bridge schools closed because almost all
teachers were suffering from flu which was raging in the district
- Friday, 28th March 1919:
105 mm gun captured by the 9th Battalion Duke of
Wellington's Regiment brought back to Halifax barracks
- Saturday, 5th April 1919:
Stormy meeting at the winding up of the Hebden Bridge
Fustian Manufacturing Company, which was bought by the CWS
- Saturday, 19th April 1919:
New organ at Upper Edge Baptist Church, Elland,
dedicated to those killed in the war
- Saturday, 3rd May 1919:
War memorial tablet unveiled at Lightcliffe Congregational
Church
- Friday, 9th May 1919:
Freedom of the Borough of Halifax conferred on Rt Hon J. H
Whitley MP, Mr James Parker MP, and Sir George Fisher-Smith
- Wednesday, 28th May 1919:
Town's meeting at Sowerby Bridge unanimous recommended the
purchase of Crow Wood estate as a public park maternity home
and child welfare centre
- Saturday, 31st May 1919:
Revival of Hebden Bridge agricultural show after the war
- Sunday, 1st June 1919:
Service at Halifax Parish Church to honour all those
from the town killed in the war
- Friday, 13th June 1919:
Grand victory ball at the Victoria Hall for the
employees of John Mackintosh, Whitsuntide, celebrated as a victory
festival
- Monday, 16th June 1919:
Public welcome home from abroad for men of the 2nd
Battalion West Riding Regiment (Duke of Wellington's). The scene was
repeated two days later when the First-Fourth Battalion (Halifax
Territorials) arrived home
- Monday, 23rd June 1919:
Cotton strike closed many mills in Sowerby Bridge
- Saturday, 28th June 1919:
Signing of the peace treaty with Germany. Scenes of
rejoicing in the district
- Monday, 14th July 1919:
Cotton mills in Sowerby Bridge resumed work after the
strike
- Saturday, 19th July 1919:
Day of national peace rejoicing. Joyous gatherings
everywhere including a grand civic arch in Princess Street, Halifax
- Thursday, 31st July 1919:
Fire gutted Constantine's timber yard, Hipperholme
- Thursday, 7th August 1919:
Record rush for the resorts for the first Wakes
holiday after the peace. A new feature of holiday making was the
extended charabanc tour
- Saturday, 6th September 1919:
Memorial organ to the fallen installed at Trinity
Road Baptist Church, Halifax
- Saturday, 6th September 1919:
Eight men from Copley and Skircoat honoured for their
bravery during the war by residents. Southowram entertained all its
returning soldiers and sailors to a high tea. Officers and men from
Brighouse held a reunion
- Monday, 15th September 1919:
The Rt Hon J. H. Whitley MP entertained the
employees of Hanson Lane Mills to a day trip to Blackpool to mark
the firm's jubilee
- Wednesday, 1st October 1919:
The Halifax Girls' Club and Hostel re-opened as a
home for young ladies in business
- Sunday, 26th October 1919:
Foundation stone laid at the new Sacred Heart of
St Patrick Catholic Church, Sowerby Bridge
- Tuesday, 11th November 1919:
Two minutes Armistice Day silence
- Friday, 28th November 1919:
Halifax – Leeds express derailed near Hipperholme
- Wednesday, 3rd December 1919:
Proposals to extend the Halifax borough boundary
- Saturday, 6th December 1919:
Halfpenny fares abolished on Halifax trams
- Friday, 12th December 1919:
Sale of war relics on behalf of the Kiddies'
Christmas Treat Fund
- Wednesday, 24th December 1919:
Tram service stopped by landslide and wall collapse
in Godley Road, Halifax
- Thursday, 25th December 1919:
War orphans entertained at King Cross

and in Halifax this triumphed arch was erected across Princess Street

taken shortly after the end of hostilities
