Rev John Bates was born in Bradshaw.
He was a Halifax schoolmaster, a Methodist Minister at Stainland [1789], a General Baptist and a Wesleyan local preacher before becoming Minister at Moor End Congregational Church [1793-1796]. He was said to have embraced the doctrine of adult Baptism by Immersion and was baptised amongst the General Baptists at Queensbury and worked for time at Haley Hill.
He then became Minister at Heywood's Chapel [1796-1802], although he did not live in Northowram.
He left Northowram and returned to be Minister at Moor End Congregational Church [1802-1815]. During his ministry, Love Feasts were held in the church causing Lady Hewley's Charity to be withdrawn.
He lived in Halifax where he ran Bates's School. His interests in the school are said to have interfered with his duties at Moor End Church.
In 1800, he wrote
The Christian's New and Complete Family Bible, being a new, clear and universal exposition and commentary on the Holy Scriptures, containing the whole of the Sacred Texts of the Old and New Testaments, with the Apocrypha at large, etc., by several eminent divines
In 1804, he published a work on
Redemption Redeemed, wherein the most glorious work of the Redemption of the world by Jesus Christ is vindicated in its latitude and extent, &c., &c., &c., by John Goodwin, a little modernised and abridged by John Bates, V.D.M. (Word of God Minister)
In 1812, he published
Doolittle's Call to Delaying Sinners
He was buried at South Parade Methodist Chapel.
He predicted that
There will be a division at my death: for one part are Calvanists and others Arminians
