Sir Richard Saltonstall was born at Lower Saltonstall, son of Gilbert Saltonstall.
He was a skinner; MP for the City of London [1586]; Sheriff of London [1588]; Lord Mayor of London [1597-8]; Master of the Skinners' Company; the governor of the Merchant Adventurers' Company.
He had interests in the East India Company. He was knighted in 1598.
He married Susanna Poynts.
Children:
In his will, he bequeathed a sum of £100 to be distributed as money – or in penny loaves – to the poor by the wardens of Halifax Parish Church.
He lived at several places in the district, including Rookes Hall and Wynteredge Hall.
In 1576, he bought the Groves or Colcarters estate from Edward, son of George Tyrell. From Richard, the manor descended in the direct male line for 5 generations to Richard [15??-1618] Richard [15??-1649], John [15??-1658] Philip [15??-1668] and Philip [1???-1694], then to Philip's granddaughter Philippa Saltonstall who married John Goodere.
He was buried at South Ockenden, Essex.
In St Nicholas's Church, South Ockenden. there is a standing monument in the North Chapel to Sir Richard Saltonstall, in which he and Lady Susanna are represented with kneeling figures of their children, seven sons and nine daughters, 11 of whom lived to honour their father at his funeral. Sir Richard is represented in armour and wears the insignia of the Lord Mayor.
There are also brasses: on the West wall is a very plain brass, or coffin plate, to the Lady Elizabeth Saltonstall, inscribed
