On Saturday last sheriff Jansen went to New Holstein and arrested an habitual drunkard named Henry Pieper and brought him to this city. He was taken into court and fined under section 1561 of the revised statute which says. Any person found in a saloon in a drunken or intoxicated state who is unable to care for himself or is boisterous may be arrested and fined. Pieper had been posted by the board of supervisors of New Holstein and all saloon-keepers notified not to sell him liquor. It seems that some men in the saloon business are so anxious for the nickle that they disregard the law and give liquor to any person who has the money to pay for it. Such saloon keepers bring discredit upon the entire class engaged in the business. Section 1556 of the revised statute is strong enough to reach the class of saloonkeepers who have no regard for right and justice. This sections says: The sale or giving away of any liquor to any person who shall have been forbidden in the manner provided by law, or the person who shall purchase or procure in behalf or such prohibited person and such liquor, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $50.00 and the cost of prosecution. In default of immediate payment of the fine he shall be sent to jail for not less than 30 days. This section further provides that the person to whom the liquor is sold or procured for, may be arrested on complaint, of a supervisor and brought before a justice and made to testify as to where or from whom he procure the liquor and if he shall refuse to testify as to where or from whom he procured liquor he shall be committed tot he county jail until he does testify. Saloon keepers who are in the habit of selling liquor to men after the authorities have notified them to desist will find that it will not be the easiest matter in the world to escape being punished for the offense.

An habitual drunkard after a short siege in jail will be sure to squeal.
