FIFTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

Between the hours of nine and ten o'clock in the morning, neighbors discovered the flames coming from the roof of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Math Freidel at Jericho, and hastened to the place to notify the old couple. The fire is supposed to have originated from a defective chimney and the loss is estimated to be about $1500 with insurance of $800.

A large crowd packed the House Theater to hear the recently organized Boys and Girls Band in their first public concert and were given a real surprise when the band started their opening number. The band had been practicing diligently for four months under the direction of Leader Wolfe of Brillion and in that short time reached a degree of efficiency that was unexpected.

Several neighbors gave a surprise to Stephen Wettstein, it being his birthday. Music and cards were the chief entertainment and a delicious lunch was served at midnight.

Edward F. Mumm, director of the Knight Templars Band of Chicago, was appointed director of the 120th Field Artillery Bank of Appleton. Mr. Mumm is a Brillion boy, the youngest brother of Fred.

Members of the St. Augustine's congregation were given a delightful surprise on Christmas eve when sweet toned, electric sanctuary chimes ushered in the celebration of midnight Mass. The chimes, which were installed that day, were presented to the congregation by James Graney, one of the pioneer settlers of Rantoul and a lifelong member of St. Augustine's Church. The cost of the chimes was $150.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Berchem and family were guests over Sunday at the Joseph Nickel home in New Holstein.
