Chilton Times January 5, 1867

Stockbridge-We managed this week to get time to make a short visit to our neighboring town of Stockbridge. Although Stockbridge, politically, is the meanest town in the county, we must admit that a more warm hearted, hospitable or generous class of citizens, does not reside on the face of the "globe". They are full of life and enterprises and should they continue for a few years longer to improve their town as they have during the past season they will not only make a garden of their farming lands, but will have a village that will be the pride and market town of the county. Their village now consist of 7 dry goods and grocery stores, 1 drug store, 1 hardware and tin shop, 2 cabinet shops, 1 boot and shoe store, 1 harness shop, 1 photograph gallery, and 1 large public hall. There is also a grist mill, a steam stave factory, and two ware houses at the lake shore, a short distance from the corners, and the coming season it is proposed to erect a church and school house, each costing $3000. The stores have all a fair stock of goods, suitable to the wants of the community, and the prices of the goods give general satisfaction to the public. The largest stock of goods is kept by Mr. Clancey & Son, but as they intend to speak to the public, through the Times next week, we will defer our notice of their establishment until then. The hotel is kept by Mr. Felix Reif, and a more accommodating or obliging landlord we have seldom met. His table is always furnished with the best the market affords, and everything is cooked to perfection. Any one who wants a comfortable meal should give him a call.

Mr. Thos. McLean's warehouse will be in complete running order in the Spring and arrangements will be made for a large wheat business next season. We also understand that some good business man will be placed in charge of the Whitney warehouse.

The handsomest brick residence in the county is in Stockbridge, and is owned by Mr. Albert Holt. A larger hearted or more generous man we have never met, and his many kind, neighborly acts will long be remembered in Stockbridge when he is no more. God bless you, old fellow, if you are a Republican, you have always proved yourself a true friend to the printer.

Want of space prevents us from individually noticing the establishments of our advertisers, but we can attend to that on another occasion.
