A Good Man Gone

Joseph Troemmel, one of Rantouls best citizens, passed away on Monday, the 1st inst., and universal grist pervails in the minds of all who knew him. He was a native of Prussia and at his decease, was 51 years old. He died as he lived a good Christian and upright man. His departure is regretted, to say nothing of the bereft widow and seven orphans. May he who is a Father to the fatherless, and a husband tot he widows guide, guard and protect, as well as furnish consolation, is the wish of all. The case is one of double grief, as a son named John preceded him heavenward the month previous.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, 1880, at his father's residence in Rantoul, John, son of Joseph Troemel and wife, aged 19 years, and 7 months.

The dearly beloved deceased was attacked by a complication of diseases and his unexpected call to Heaven has caused sorrow not only in the home circle but at large, and is another exemplication of the old truism that death, like love visits the court, camp, and grove, and generally the good, true and beautiful are the first victims to cross Times' River, and yet as we make the record we feel at heart that John is not lost but gone before. Requiescat en pace.

Joseph Tremmel - Chilton Times - July 27, 1895
Dee Dorn shared this information

Residents of this city were painfully surprised Monday morning on learning that Jos. Tremmel had shot and killed himself.

The particulars of the sad affair are as follows: Sunday evening Mr. Tremmel had a family dance, as he called it, and invited in his neighbors for a little jollification. All seemed to go well until just before the dance broke up. Then he seemed to become greatly incensed at his wife dancing with another man. Some words ensued but nothing seemed to be of a serious nature. After the dancers left, a neighbor, Mr. Sheldon, remained. After a few good bye night caps, Mr. Sheldon went home, leaving Tremmel alone in his saloon. The hour was then 2;30 in the morning, and Mrs. Tremmel says that her husband came in, kissed the children good bye, had some harsh words with her, and then steeped into the bar room. A moment after there rang on the morning air the sharp report of a revolver, and the sound of a body falling to the floor; then an awful silence. The children ran shrieking to the neighbors for help. Mr. Albert Boelke was first on the scene, and on going into the smoke-filled room a gruesome sight met his horror stricken gaze. Prone on his face in front of the bar in a pool of blood, lay the body of Joseph Tremmel. Near his right hand was a cheap 32-calibre revolver of the bull dog pattern, and in his right temple the powder marked bullet hole, from which blood and brains were oozing. Dr. Lathrop was hurriedly summoned, but could do nothing as the man was no doubt dead before he struck the floor.

Joseph Tremmel was 39 years of age and formerly resided in Bakerville. Shortly before he married the widow Kick, he purchased the tract of land of C. H. Rehmke, that is now known as Tremmel's addition, and on which his saloon and residence stood. He came to this city from Chilton, and started the first cheese factory in Marshfield. Shortly after that he married Mrs. Margaret Kick, whose first husband met his death by falling into a vat of boiling beer at the Chilton brewery.

They have been married six years in September and have three children, Ella, aged four; Lillie, aged three; and Amy, a child in arms. Mr. Tremmel has three boys by his first wife, and Mrs. Tremmel five children, by her first husband. Of the eleven children, ten are living at home and bear witness that the married life of the pair has been far from happy.

Separations, divorce suits and family fights were of frequent occurrence, and matters at times reached such a stage that officers of the law had to be called in. Mr. Tremmel was insanely jealous, and that coupled with liquor and financial difficulties no doubt prompted him to the rash act. The funeral was held from his late residence at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.--Marshfield News.

Jane Charlotte, a child of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Thiel, of Rantoul, having just recovered from diphtheria was again taken sick and after a brief illness of heart sickness, quietly fell asleep in the arms of a loving Savior on Feb. 8, 1895, aged 11 years 11 months and 13 days. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in the Reformed Church at Potter, conducted by Rev. W. A. Arpke and attended by a large concourse of people. This is the second child Mr. and Mrs. Thiel have lost this winter.

The ways of God are at times very mysterious and it is hard for us to understand why He gives us those dear little ones and soon takes them again.

We know no other reason saye the one the prophet gives us "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways your ways, sayeth the Lord" He knows what is best for all His children, and therefore the christian bows in humble submission to His holy will, and seeks grace to say: Not my will but Thine be done.

Our sympathies are with the sad, broken-hearted family.

Dr. R. Thiessen Dies Suddenly

Suffering a heart attack on Friday, Dr. Reinhardt Thiessen, native of the town of New Holstein, and the discoverer of the origin of coal, died Sunday at his home in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he was research chemist for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The funeral was held Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Thiessen was born near here in May, 1868. His early education was acquired in country school in the town of New Holstein, and in Kiel. In his young manhood he taught sciences in Red River Valley University in South Dakota, Des Moines College in Iowa, and at the University high school in Chicago. He was with the Bureau of Mines for over twenty years.

Because of his brilliant research work on the origin of coal - of which he was engaged up to the time of his death - he was awarded a silver medal in 1925 by the Royal Arts Society of London. The results of his findings are taught in every school where science is taught.

For a number of years Dr. Thiessen had been visiting this vicinity with assistants for the purpose of digging up samples of peat from marshes, particularly in the Hog Island area. These samples were shipped back to his laboratory in Pittsburgh for analysis. Dr. Thiessen was perhaps one of the greatest authorities in the country on coal and its formation.

He always enjoyed highly his visits here, which gave him opportunity to visit old friends and relatives and the many familiar scenes of his boyhood and youth. His last visit here was made in the summer of 1937.

Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons - Gilbert, the husband of the former Miss Lucille Laun of this city, and Linwood and Reinhard, all of Pittsburgh; a sister in Milwaukee and another sister, Mrs. Louis Henschel of near New Holstein; and three granddaughters. Four brothers and sisters died in their childhood, victims of a diptheria epidemic.

Dr. Thiessen was the subject of countless newspaper and magazine articles, and in the pages of scientific history his name is written large.
