On Sunday, last, January 27, 1900, rev. Anthony Joseph Verberk, for many years pastor of St. Augustine's Catholic church, of this city, died at his home in Hollandtown, brown County, aged 69 years. He had been in poor health for years but the immediatedcause of his death was pneumonia, superinduced by the grippe.

Father Verberk wa born in Holland, January 17, 1832. He received his theological education at St. Francis seminary, Milwaukee, where he was ordained a priest Dec. 27, 1863. His first appointment as pastor was to Theresa, Dodge county and Freedom. Later he had charge of the congregation at Little Chute where he built the church, pasonage and school; and from 1869 to 1872 he was pastor of St. Mary's Appleton, resigning this charge for a year's travel in Europe.

After his return, in February, 1876, he was appointed rector of St. Augustines's in this city, continuing as such after the German portion of the congregation withdrew and until 1881, when he returned to Little Chute.

In 1889 he again took charge of St. Augustine's of this city, but in 1892 failing in health, he was obligated to resign the pastorate and was then relieved from further regular parish work. Since that time he has resided at Hollandtown. It was during his administration in Chilton that the present substantial church edifice was built; and the healthy condition of the affairs of the parish at the time of his first removal, in 1881, attests his successful ministry while in charge.

In reviewing, Father Verberk's church work in this city, the characteristics of the man that appear in bold relief are sincerity of purpose and earnestness of execution, even to austerity,--excellent qualities, both and when coupled with soundness of judgement and kindness of heart, as in this case, resultants of great and enduring good.

The funeral took place on Wednesday, from the Holland church, at Green Bay, Rt. Rev. Bishop Messmer conducting the services.

At Jericho, on Friday, January 11, 1901. Mary Honora, adopted daughter of August and Josephine Vogt aged 18 years and 11 months. The young lady was a daughter of W. H. Sullivan, a veteran of the war of the rebellion. She was born February 14, 1882. At the age of two years she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Vogt Her life up to a few short months ago when she was taken ill with a severe cold which terminated into consumption, has been one of sunshine. She was given a good education and all the comforts of a good home. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her. The funeral took place on Monday and was attended by a large concourse of people.

The oft repeated truth that, "In midst of life we are in Death," was brought home to the People of Chilton in a sad manner on Sunday morning shortly before ten o'clock when August B. Vogt, while kneeling in St. Mary's church preparatory to taking part in the services of the Mass, was suddenly stricken with heart failure and leaning his head on his arm expired before this Pastor Rev. Fr. L. N. Thelen, could reach his side and administer the last sacraments. Mr. Vogt had been in poor health for some time, suffering from valvular affection of the heart. the previous week his condition had been such that he was obliged to remain at his home on Baldwin street until Saturday morning when he felt sufficiently able to attend the mission service at St. Augustine's church. Sunday morning he attended services at St. Mary's and when his condition was noticed by other members of the congregation he was picked up and carried to the vestibule and a physician summoned but he had passed to the world beyond.

August B. Vogt was born in Dringenburg, Westphalen, Germany, Oct. 23, 1844, and was the son of the late Anton Vogt. He came with his parents to America in 1851, and located in the town of Forest, Fond du Lac county. When quite young he went out into the world to work and in August, 1862, at the age of seventeen years, he offered his services to his adopted county to aid in putting down the rebellion and enlisted at Forest in Company H of the Thirty-second regiment, Wisconsin volunteer infantry serving faithfully until hi8s discharge in '65 after three years of service. He was taken prisoner at Pond Springs, Ala., in July, '64 and was held by the rebels for eight months. Mr. Vogt was a brave solider and was beloved by his comrades. At the close of the war he returned to his home in Forest and after remaining a short time he went to St. Joe, Fond du Lac county , where he learned the blacksmith trade from the Koonz Bros. After finishing his trade he came to Jericho, this county, and established a blacksmith shop. In 1872' he was married to Josephine Wattier of St. Joe at Jericho and continued working at his trade until some seventeen years ago when he disposed of his shop and retired. He was one of the charter members of the Holy Trinity church at Jericho and with his brother, the late Bernard Vogt, assisted in hewing out he first logs for the first church erected by that congregation. He took an active interest in the progress of the congregation and served as a member of the board of trustees for many years. Some three years ago he disposed of his property in Jericho and removed to this city where he purchased a home. He was a man of retiring disposition but always thoroughly enjoyed the company of his comrades and attended regularly all meetings of the Jos.. B. Reynolds Grand Army Post. He was also a devout churchman and when his health permitted attended the services regularly. His citizenship was of a high order, having been tested in the Civil war as well as in the daily walks of life and never found wanting. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, a dutiful son, a kind and obliging neighbor, both here and in his old home, Jericho. His life was spent in a Christian and profitable manner and his sudden death is deplored by the entire community.

On Wednesday morning Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's church in this city by Rev. Fr. L. N. Thelen, six of his comrades, Geo. D. Greed, E. G. Hart, Jos. Winkler, Frank Winkler, Geo. H. Baker and Bernard Schemmer acting as pallbearers. The remains, were then escorted to Jericho by relatives and friends, where Requiem Mass was likewise celebrated at Holy Trinity church by Rev. Fr. J. H. Huhn. At Jericho the pallbearers were his old neighbors, Peter Greuel, John Mahlberg, Jos. Ritzke and Jacob Ziegelbauer of that place and B. Schemmer and Frank Winkler, of this city. He is survived by his widow, one son Louis Vogt, of Seattle, Wash., a brother Jos. Vogt, of Jericho, and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Koch and Mrs Henry Nett, of Brothertown. An adopted daughter, Lenora Vogt, and two brothers preceded him across the river, Edw. Vogt, who died at Medford in 1910, and Barnard Vogt, who died in 1911 at his home near this city. Members of the Womens Relief Corps of this city attended the funeral in a body as a token of respect. The bereft widow and other relatives have the sympathy of the community in this sad hour of mourning.

Among those from outside of the county who were in attendance at the funeral of August Vogt were Adolph Wattier and wife of Webster, S. D., Alphonse Wattier and wife of Carroll, Ia., Mrs. Louise Kuhl of Templeton, Ia., brothers and sister of Mrs. Vogt, Miss Delphine Vogt a granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Joechs of Appleton, John Weast and wife of Forest, Fond du Lac county, Leonard Flesch, and Benj. Stephany and wife and Henry Stephany of St. John, Fond du Lac county.

Andrew Vandersande, age 85 of N1072 Irish Road, New Holstein, died Nov. 12, 1987 at Calumet Medical center, Chilton.

Andrew was born in Sheboygan Falls, June 14, 1902 a son of the late Adrian and Nellie {Jensen} VanderSande. September 7, 1927 he married Geneieve Thede in Chilton. She preceeded him in death on Dec. 31, 1976. He then married Frances {DuBuhr} Markwardt, April 16, 1977 at St. John's United Church of Christ, New Holstein. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife Frances; Three Sons, Harold VanderSande, of Oshkosh; Roger VanderSande, of Manitowoc and David VanderSande, of Milwaukee; Two Daughters, Mrs. Marvin {Patricia} Hicks, Pensacola, Fl; Mrs. James {Janice} Revolinsky, Manitowoc; Sixteen Grandchildren; Seven Great-Grandchildren; Three Step-Sons; John Markwardt, of Verona, WI.; Edgar Markwardt, of San Antonio, TX.; Robert Markwardt, Milwaukee; Six Step-daughters, Mrs. Ned {Frances} Coe, Chicago; Mrs. Alex {Alma} Adshead, Colbalt, Ontario, Canada; Mrs. Leona Sattell, of Greendale, WI.; Mrs. Patrick {Virginia} Laughrin, Hilbert, WI; Miss Janet Markwardt, Milwaukee, WI.; Mrs. John {Kari} Hogden, Black River Falls, WI.; also one adopted Son, Richard J. VanderSande, with the Army in Geissen, Germany. 32 Step-grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. from St. John's United Church of Christ, New Holstein. Officiating will be the Rev. Albert Born. Burial will be in the Kiel City Cemetery.

Dorothy Van Dyke, Wrightstown, formerly of Kaukauna, age 86, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at her home. She was born August 6, 1917 in Stockbridge, the daughter of the late John and Anna {Scherer} Kersten. On September 12, 1935, she married Edwin Van Dyke. He passed away in 1978. Dorothy was a homemaker all of her life, loved her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, learned how to drive at the age of 63. She loved to garden and help out at Century Oaks in Wrightstown where she lived her last years; and kept the staff under her mothering wing.

She is survived by her two sons: Edwin T. Van Dyke, and Donald {Patricia} Van Dyke; her daughter, Charlotte {Joseph} Weyenberg all of Kaukauna; eight grandchildren Diane {Mark} Cappaert of Kimberly, Robert {Penny} Van Dyke of Appleton, and William {Debbie} Van Dyke, of Kentucky; Melissa {Tom} Arnoldi of Howard, WI, Sara {Will} Rieselbach of Milwaukee, Kelly {Robert} Ashley of Kaukauna, Daniel Weyenberg and Christina {Luke} Hartjes; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister Margaret {Orville} Spaulding of Menasha.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, a daughter-in-law Judy Van Dyke, two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial mass will be conducted on Monday, June 7, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna with the Rev. Jack Mularky officiating. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Monday from 9:30 until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of Century Oaks in Wrightstown and Mary, Dorothy's Heartland Hospice nurse, and Nancy the Hospice Chaplain for their loving care.

Theodore J. "The Cat" "Ted" Van Dera, formally of St. John, 84, died peacefully at Parkside Care Center, Little Chute, with his wife and daughter at his side, on Dec. 24, 2006, following a lengthy illness of Parkinson and Alzheimer's. He was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Outagamie County, son of the late William and Mary {Weyenberg} Van Dera. On May 2, 1944, he married Jean Vandenberg at St. Peter and Paul Church in Wrightstown. Ted worked for Oscar Bolt Construction for many years. He retired from Lunda Construction after many years of building bridges throughout Wisc. and Minn. Ted was a member of the Wisc. Carpenters and Laborer's Unions. He and his wife also owned and operated Ted and Jean's Bar in St. John, for 34 years. Ted enjoyed the northwoods as well as crafting wood and working with his hands. The couple moved to the northwoods on Boundary Lake after Ted's retirement and returned to Kaukauna in 1999.

Ted will be deeply missed by his wife, {Names Omitted for Privacy} of 62 years; a daughter of New Holstein; a son and daughter-in-law; three grandchildren, Jason, Justin, and Amanda; a great-grandson on the way; a sister, of Kaukauna; a brother and sister-in-law of Kaukauna; a brother of Appleton; a sister-in-law of Appleton. He is further survived by his wife's family, a sister of Kimberly; 2 sister-in-law's and their husbands of Kaukauna; a sister-in-law of Shakopee, Minn.; a brother-in-law of DePere; and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; a brother-in-law, Victor Nackers; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Van Dera.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute, with Fr. Jim Hablewitz officiating.

Friends will be received on WEDNESDAY, at CHURCH from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton.

Marie E. Vandeyacht, Kimberly, age 79, passed away Monday, January 5, 2004 in Kaukauna. Marie was born in the town of Harrison on July 3, 1924; daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Schmidt Horn. On June 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to Norbert Vandeyacht in Sherwood; he survives. As a young woman, Marie worked in the Two Rivers area. She enjoyed growing African violets, as well as creating ceramic pieces, and crocheting.

Marie is survived by three daughters: Carol {Larry} Kauer of Kaukauna; Donna Chappell of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Joanne Vandeyacht of Kimberly; fives sons: Earl "Duke" {Bobbie} Vandeyacht of Sunsites, Ariszona; Mark {Yardena} Vandeyacht of Edmonds, Washington; Russ {Rose} Vandeyacht of Sunsites, Arizona; Steve {Lee} Vandeyacht of Dillon, Colorado; and Brian {Beverly} Vandeyacht of Alanson, Michigan; seventeen grandchildren: Krista {Jim} Luedtke, Jason Kauer, Troy Vandeyacht, Scott Vandeyacht, Terri Boelter, Jeremy {Mindi} Boelter, Christopher Boelter, Danielle Vandeyacht and her finacee Richard Strom, Sarah Chappell, Heather Chappell, Daniel Chappell, Clair Vandeyacht, Elli Vandeyacht, Ashley Vandeyacht, Andrew Vandeyacht, Alex Vandeyacht, and Abigail Vandeyacht; five great grandchildren: Daniel, Kassandra, Kaylynne, Ocean, and Brooke; two brothers: Norbert {Barb} Horn of Sherwood and Eugene Horn of Menasha; three sisters: Angeline {Gregor} Weber of Fond du Lac; Josephine VanLinn of Neenah; Betty {Tony} Mallmann of Florida; a sister-in-law, Shirley Horn of Sherwood. Marie is further survived by countless nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends, She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandsons Kevin and Aaron Kauer, a brother Marvin Horn, a sister Georgine {Lloyd} Porter, and a brother-in-law Eugene VanLinn.

Funeral services for Marie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Carey officiating. George Vollstedt, aged 66, well-known Kiel resident, passed away very suddenly at his home at 610 Fremont street at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following a heart attack.

The deceased, the son of Nicholas and Sophie Vollstedt, was born in New Holstein May 21st, 1875. He attended the grade school there and after graduating went into the butcher business, which trade he learned from his father.

He was married on December 30, 1911 to Emma Wirth of New Holstein, the ceremony was performed by the late Justice of the Peace William Broeckert.

Following their marriage they resided in Brillion for one year and in March 1913 they purchased the present building on Fremont street. Outside of a few years, when they resided in New Holstein the couple...

Death claimed Joseph Voelker, one of the highly respected residents of St. Anna, on Monday morning at 10:30, after two years illness with cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born in St. Anna, February 13, 1860, where he grew to manhood {next line undecipherable} Barbara Enders, the couple making their home on a farm near there. His wife died in 1891, and about a year later he entered a second marriage with Barbara Dreifuerst of St. Cloud. In 1903 Mr.Voelker transferred his farm to his son, Henry and moved to the village to live retirement. Besides his second wife he leaves six children by his first marriage, as follows: Emil of Seymour, Henry of Neenah, Mrs. Ed. Huberty of Mt. Calvary, Mrs. Otto Brill of Calumetville, Mrs. Hattie Bruett of Fond du Lac and Mrs. Dumke of Milwaukee. Also four children by his second marriage, viz.: Mrs. Hubert Taff of Fond du Lac, Olive and Edmund at home and Mrs. Walter Stollenwork of St. Anna. He is also survived by two brothers, Lorenz of St. Cloud and Valentine of St. Anna, and eight sisters, namely: Mrs. Wendel Burg of St. Anna; Mrs. Jos. Schmitz, Mrs. Geo. Schlever, Mrs. P. Brost and Mrs. Aug. Milhaupt of Milwaukee; Mr. Ph. Becker and Miss Louise Voelker of Burlington. The funeral services will be held at St. Ann�s church at 10 o�clock on Thursday, Rev. Schmitt officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. The floral offerings were large and beautiful.

John J. Vogel, Jr., 57, town of Charlestown, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Monday at St. Agnes hospital, Fond du Lac. He had been in ill health for the past two years and had been a patient at the hospital for the past three days.

He was born in Sheboygan county on August 22, 1893, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Vogel, Sr. He was married to Miss Evelyn Schaefer on September 29, 1922, at Chilton. For many years he was a mechanic, but for the past few years he had been employed on the Henry Steiner farm.

Survivors include his parents at Chilton; one son, Raymond, of Chilton; five daughters, Mrs. Jamon {Dorothy} Machut of Plymouth, Mrs. Earl {Helen} Duchow and Miss Catherine of Chilton, Mrs. Alfred {Virginia} Greuel of New Holstein and Mrs. Melvin {Mary Ellen} Greuel of Milwaukee and Mrs. Len McMunn and Mrs. Edgar Depies of New Holstein.

His wife preceded him in death on July 14, 1932. One brother also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Pfeffer Funeral home, Chilton, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary�s Catholic church. The Rev. Joseph Bartelme will officiate and burial will be made in St. Mary�s cemetery.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home from this evening until the hour of services.

Last week Wednesday, Mrs. Barbara Voelter, born Renz died at the high age of 90 years and 1month, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Wick. The deceased is counted among the oldest pioneer women in this area, she first saw the light of world on September 19, 1824 in Roelfeld, Baveria, Germany. In 1848, she came to America and settled in St. Anna, where she lived for 56 years. The last ten years she lived with her daughter Mrs. Joseph Wick in Kiel. Her husband preceded her in death 23 years ago. She leaves behind three sons, eight daughters, 50 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren who all mourn her death.

On Saturday morning, Father Kolbe, officiated at the Requiem Mass at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church after which the coffin was carried to St. Anna and buried at the Church Cemetery next to her husband, where Father Schemmer officiated at the grave side service.
