Surname History
The Norris surname is most likely is a variation of the word describing a man from the north country. In Medieval times, English usage often applied it to people from a northern area, such as Scotland, the north of England or even the northern end of the village.
It is quite likely, however, that many of the Norris surname are descended from the de Noyers family of Normandy. Guillaume de Noyers went with William the Conqueror in 1066 to England and settled there after it was taken in battle by the Normans. Because of his efforts, he was granted quite a number of manors in the Suffolk and Norfolk areas, giving him (and his descendants) some influence in the country.
