Leigh Beck

An area of Canvey mainly covering the old Leigh Beck Farm. This was the first area of the island that Frederick Hester bought. He lived at Leigh Beck Farm and the area was divided up into plots and sold off to people brought down to the island for about £5 per plot. You can read about Frederick Hester and his dreams for the island here.

The area is also one of Canvey’s earliest settlement sites; remains have been found here from 2nd, 3rd and 4th Centuries. The name Leigh Beck relates to a stream here and its being overlooked by Leigh.
