The Stepping Stones

There has been a crossing between Canvey and the mainland since at least the fifteenth century which you can read about in Dowd’s Canvey Cyclopaedia with stones said to be brought from Laindon Hills and gravel brought for the causeway.

The causeway and stepping stones were used to cross to and from the island at low-tide. At high-tide there were several boats used as ferries.

At some point six round stones were added to the stepping stone crossing cast in cement and it is three of those that still survive today.
