The Bishop Family

The Bishop family originate from Kilworth in Leicestershire. William Henry David BISHOP moved with his family to Canvey sometime in the 1920s living at 'Monowai', Morris Road. His granddaughter in a recent newspaper article said:-

Her grandfather, William Bishop, had a stall in the former indoor market, off St Anne’s Road, Canvey, in the 1920s.

An old photo of him standing with other traders now hangs by the checkout of Morrison’s supermarket, off Northwick Road.

Joan said: “My grandad opened a shop at the top of Maurice Road a couple of years after he started-off with the stall.

“He got my grandmother to work in the shop a lot of the time in the early days, while he earned good money helping lay the first concrete roads on the island.”

Joan’s father Reg took over the Maurice Road store after the Second World War.

His brothers Bill and Bert also opened greengrocers – which were all called “Bishops” – in May Avenue and High Street, Canvey.

The Bishops’ greengrocers remained well-known Canvey landmarks until the last of the brothers retired in the 1980s.

While Joan’s grandfather helped lay concrete along the High Street and a few of the island’s other main highways, she recalled most roads were still muddy tracks when she was growing up.
