Family
Histories
compiled by Valerie Capels
I've been researching my family history for many
years. In the course of this, I've also had the pleasure of
researching histories of other families and friends. Through
this site I hope to present this collected information for the benefit
of others also researching those families. Perhaps they will
find new information and connections--or have new information to
offer.
This compilation is about more than bare facts and statistics.
All of the families and individuals presented here were real people
who lived and died among us and their communities. They
had dreams and tried to make their way. Most experienced youth,
the tribulations of raising a family, the struggles of work, the
joys of traditions, and the sorrows of loss. Some died young;
others lived long, fruitful lives. Some struggled to eke out
an existance; some fared better. What were their stories?
This is only as complete and accurate as the information available
up to this moment. No doubt it will continue to evolve over
time, as it should.

Findlay Family History |
My
grandmother Elizabeth
Easton Findlay emigrated from Cumbernauld County, Dunbartonshire,
Scotland to Halifax, Canada sometime around 1913--she was
in her early 20's. It was in Canada she met and married
my grandfather, Lester Henry Capels, who would later abandon
her and their seven children in Syracuse, New York.
What of the family she left behind in Scotland and elsewhere?

My
grandmother, Charlotta "Jutta" Gumpert, came to the U.S. from
Berlin, Germany in 1926, where she married Arnold Smidt, who
had come the year before to get settled and prepare for their
new life together. Her beloved sister, Thea, followed
many years later, as did her mother. They raised a
family in Flushing, New York before moving to Syracuse in
1954. Jutta's brother, Julius, went to Israel, where
he raised a family. Features
