EVERETTE L. BAUGH
Everette L. BAUGH, 52, of Rt. 5, Raleigh, died Wednesday in the
Veteran's Hospital in Durham. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
D. G. AVENT of Clinton, Tenn., and Mrs. D. A. WRIGHT and Mrs. A.
M. GRIFFIN, both of Winston-Salem. Mr. BAUGH was a native of Wake
County and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was a veteran
of World War II and was the operator of a service station on North
Boulevard. The family will be at Overby Mortuary Chapel from 7 to
9 p.m. today.

HUBERT I. BAUGH
Funeral services for Hubert I. BAUGH, 67, of Raleigh, Route 5, who
died Monday in a hospital at Goldsboro after a brief illness, will
be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the New Hope Baptist Church. Dr.
Owen F. HERRING of Wake Forest, pastor, will officiate, assisted
by the Rev. Robert COSTNER of Knightdale. The body will remain at
Yelverton's in Raleigh until it is taken to the church to lie in
state for an hour before the funeral. Interment will be in the church
cemetery. Pallbearers will be J. C. LAWRENCE, L. D. ALLEN, Jr.,
J. M. WILBURN, L. C. ALLEN, Owen BARTHOLOMEW, and Erwin GRIFFIN.
Members of the Men's Bible Class of New Hope Church will be honorary
pallbearers. His wife, Mrs. Minda PARTIN BAUGH, died seven months
ago. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Dallas AVENT of Clinton,
Tenn., Mrs. W. A. WRIGHT of Raleigh, and Mrs. Alton GRIFFIN of Winston-
Salem; a son, Everett L. BAUGH of Raleigh; three sisters, Misses
Mamie and Alma BAUGH of Raleigh, and Mrs. W. D. BULLOCK of Valdosta,
Ga.; and four brothers, Charles E. and Arthur T. BAUGH of Raleigh,
William C. BAUGH of Wilmington, and Boyd A. BAUGH of St. Cloud,
Fla.

Wake Man's Estate

at $9,435
Hubert I. BAUGH, Wake man who died on December 13, 1948, left an
estate of $9,345 according to a preliminary inventory filed yesterday
with Hallie WHITLOCK, deputy clerk of Wake Superior Court. The bulk
of the estate was in real estate valued at $9,000. Other assets
listed were: Bank deposits, $85; household and kitchen furniture,
$300; and miscellaneous property, $50. Beneficiaries named were
three daughters Mrs. Elsie BAUGH Anent [sic-AVENT], Mrs. Lessie
BAUGH WRIGHT, and Mrs. Pauline GRIFFIN, and one son, Everette L.
BAUGH. W. W. DUNN was named administrator.

MOREHEAD CITY -- Laura P. BAUGH, 93, of Morehead City, died Friday
at Britthaven of Newport. Originally from Wayne County, Mrs. BAUGH
and her late husband, Arthur Trawick [sic] BAUGH moved to Morehead
City in 1952. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at
First United Methodist Church with Dr. Homer Morris officiating.
Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. Survivors: son,
Arthur Trawick BAUGH Jr. and wife, Frances of Morehead City; sisters,
Tennie FALLON of Seaford, Delaware and Mary SHAPLEY of Colombia,
NC; three grandchildren, Gina SANDERSON and husband Bubba of Newport,
Shanon HARRIS and husband Gray of Marshallberg and Arthur T. BAUGH
III of Raleigh; three great-grandchildren, Jessica HARRIS, Spencer
SANDERSON, Sam SANDERSON. In addition to her husband, Mrs. BAUGH
was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. The family will
receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church,

Mrs. Minda PARTIN BAUGH, 63, of Route
5, Raleigh, died a the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. WRIGHT in
Raleigh [Wake County, North Carolina] at 2:15 Tuesday morning after
a lingering illness. Funeral services were scheduled for 3:30 Wednesday
afternoon at the New Hope Baptist Church with Dr. Owen F. HERRING
of Wake Forest, pastor of the church, officiating. Mrs. BAUGH was
the daughter of the late George W. and Sarah PARTIN of Wake County.
Surviving are her husband, Hubert I. BAUGH; three daughters: Mrs.
D. G. AVENT, Clinton, Tenn.; Mrs. W. A. WRIGHT, Raleigh, and Mrs.
A. M. GRIFFIN, Winston-Salem; a son, Everett [sic] L. BAUGH of the
home; one sister, Mrs. Nellie DUNN, Raleigh, and two brothers, H.
W. PARTIN, Goldsboro, and W. B. PARTIN, Raleigh. Four grandchildren
also survive.

WENDELL - Ralph PLEASANTS BAUGH, 91, of Wendell, died Monday morning
at Wake Medical Center. He was a retired veterinary technician and
nurseryman. He and his late wife, Evelyn JONES BAUGH were founders
of Baugh's Florist in Wendell. He was a charter member of the Wendell
Masonic Lodge. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 1997,
Wendell Baptist Church. Burial, Greenmount Cemetery. Surviving:
daughters, Betsy B. ICENHOUR of Zebulon, Beth B. O'NEAL and husband
David of Wendell; sisters, Annie B. WATKINS of Knightdale, Louise
B. GILLEN of Newport News, Va.; brothers, Arthur BAUGH of Wake Forest,

WENDELL - Robert Arthur BAUGH, 93, of 52 A. Turnipseed Road, died
Monday morning at Wake Med. He was born in Johnston County, son
of Robert A. and Maude Pleasants BAUGH. Funeral service will be
held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel with
Reverend Robert COOKE officiating. Burial, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church
cemetery. Surviving his wife, Beatrice P. BAUGH; daughter and son-in-law,
Barbara B. and J.A. AYCOCK of Florence, SC; sister, Louise B. GILLEN
of Newport News, Va.; brothers, Douglas BAUGH of Clayton and Cecil
BAUGH of Hampton, Va.; three grandchildren; one great-grand-daughter.

of Decatur, died March 26, 1987. She was a member of David Bible
Class, Avondale Pattillo Methodist Church and a resident of Valdosta
for 40 years. Surviving four daughters, Mrs. Russell BRIDGES, McDonough;
Miss Eunice BULLOCK; Mrs. Lucille SHUPE, Dumfries, Va.; Mrs. Mildred
GRINER, Decatur; two sons, Mr. W. G. BULLOCK, Thompson; Mr. Benjamin
BULLOCK, Metairie, La.; brother, Mr. Arthur BAUGH, Moorehead City,
N.C.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-
grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held
Saturday, March 28, 1987 at 11 a.m. from Ward's Glenwood Chapel.
Dr. James BRADSHAW will officiate. Internment, Dawn Memorial Park.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and assemble at the chapel at

Edna M. GILLEN

Edna M. "Eddie" GILLEN, 79, Swanton, passed away peacefully on Thursday,
July 18, 2002, in her home surrounded by her family. GILLEN was
born in Monroe, Mich., on Nov. 22, 1922 to Albert C. and Viona (EMMERSON)
BAUGH. She married Aloysius GILLEN in Angola, Ind., on July 31,
1936 and he preceded her in death in 1993. "Eddie," as her friends
so affectionately knew her, worked for over 13 years at the former
Pilliod Cabinet Company, and was a member of St. Richard's Catholic
Church. Surviving are her sons Tom GILLEN (Donna), Pat GILLEN (Dolores),
six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Sue GORMELY (Don),
brothers Dr. Robert BAUGH (Andrea Ann) and Al BAUGH (Jan), stepmother,
Florence BAUGH, half-sister Diane PANYYUSCIK, half-brothers Jerry
and Rick BAUGH, and very special friend and companion Shirley ORBEN.
GILLEN was preceded in death by three sisters and one grandson.
Funeral services began in the Neville Funeral Home Southwest Chapel,
Holland, on Monday, July 22, and continued with a Mass of Christian
Burial in St. Richard's Catholic Church, Swanton. Burial followed
in Swanton Centerville Cemetery. The family requests that memorial
contributions be given to the Swanton Rescue Squad, the American
Cancer Society, or the Swanton Public Library.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Louise R. GILLEN, 77, entered into rest on Saturday,
Nov. 23, 2002. She was born in Garner, North Carolina and was a
Peninsula resident for 60 years. She was a loving Mother and Grandmother.
She retired from the civil service at Langley Air Force Base in
1990. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hampton,
she had served as a Sunday school teacher, and had been active in
the United Methodist Women. She was a former board member of the
YMCA. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. GILLEN,
Sr. in 1960. She is survived by a son, John B. GILLEN, Jr. of Riverside,
CA; three daughters, Judi ACKERMAN and her husband, Edward of Gloucester,
VA, Bonnie GARIN of Reston, VA, and Betty ALDRED and her husband,
David of Williamsburg, VA; two brothers, Douglas BAUGH of Clayton,
NC and Cecil BAUGH of Hampton, VA; as well as three grandchildren,
Amanda ALDRED of Reston, VA, and Elizabeth GILLEN and Patrick GILLEN,
both of Riverside, CA. The family will receive friends this evening
from 7 to 8:30 at Altmeyer Funeral Home in Newport News. Funeral
services at First United Methodist Church and burial in Hampton
National Cemetery is planned, arrangements are pending. The family
requests that memorial donations be made to the Congregational Care
Ministry of First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Queen Street,

GORDON HOKE "PETE" SMITH
RALEIGH - Gordon Hoke "Pete" SMITH, 84, of Forestville Road, died
Friday, October 9, 1998, from complications resulting from Alzheimer's
Disease. Pete, affectionately named Doc by his grandchildren, was
born in Harnett County, near Kipling, the son of the late William
Henry and Margaret BAUGH SMITH. When he was only a few years old,
the family moved to the New Hope Baptist Church Community near Raleigh,
where his mother was reared. He graduated from Millbrook High School.
As a young man, he worked at Ossie Haithcock's sawmill and operated
a sawmill for Jack TAYLOR, Jr. He then worked for 37 years as a
Carman with the Seaboard Railroad, retiring in 1979. Throughout
his life, he was devoted to his family and to New Hope Baptist Church,
where he served as a deacon. In his retirement, he was able to spend
even more time with his family, especially his grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, and neighborhood children, who also loved him as their
"Doc". He truly enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, furniture
refinishing, and helping anyone who might benefit from his skills
and strengths. He took great joy in being outdoors with his hunting
dogs and fellow hunters. Pete's family is comforted by knowing that
during his illness, his life was so much richer because of the love
and devotion of his church, family, friends, and special caregiver,
Joyce SILVIA. Funeral services 3 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 1998 at
New Hope Baptist Church. Burial, New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lee TOWNSEND SMITH,
originally from Lumberton; sons, Joseph S. SMITH and his wife, Kay
of Raleigh, Samuel P. TOWNSEND and his wife, Mary Ellen of Raleigh;
daughters, Miriam S. RAWLS and her husband, Bill of Raleigh; Patricia
S. BAARS of Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Washington, DC, M. Frances
DREPS of Raleigh; brothers Walker SMITH of Vienna, VA, Robert BRIDGES
of Hamlet; sisters Jessie S. PATE of Raleigh, Adelaide S. BROWN
of Wake Forest; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews. Pete was predeceased in death by a brother,
Jack SMITH, and sisters, Julia S. PATE and Emily SMITH. Family will
receive relatives and friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, October
10, 1998 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old
Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of
his daughter, Frances, 4529 Forestville Road, Raleigh, NC 27616.

was the widow of Manley Cleophas WATKINS. Born in Johnston County,
the daughter of Maude PLEASANTS and Robert A. BAUGH. Funeral service
10 a.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Wendell. Burial,
Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery near Clayton. Surviving son and
daughter-in-law, Rex and Ella WATKINS of Miami, Fla.; daughter,
Jeane W. WRIGHT of Washington, DC; sister, Louise GILLEN of Newport
News, Va.; brothers, Arthur BAUGH of Wake Forest, Douglas BAUGH
of Clayton and Cecil BAUGH of Hampton, VA; grandchildren, Kathy
and Tracy WATKINS, Tamara WELTMAN and husband, David, Geoffrey WRIGHT

BAUGH WRIGHT, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Sunday morning at
McCloud Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC. She was born June
3, 1916 in Raleigh to Hubert I. BAUGH and Minda PARTIN BAUGH. Mrs.
WRIGHT moved to Winston-Salem in 1966 and was a longtime employee
of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She was a member of Northwest
Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William
A. WRIGHT. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia W. CHAPMAN and
her husband Tom of Florence, SC and Carol W. NAZZARO and her husband
Russ of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one grandson, Mark Andrew DILLON and his
wife Kimbra of Dillon, SC; three step-grandchildren, Mark CHAPMAN,
Kimberly CHAPMAN and Jessica LACROIX; a niece, Barbara DAVIS and
her husband Jack of Chattanooga, TN and a nephew, William AVENT
and his wife Glenda of Denver, Colorado. The funeral service will
be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Vogler Reynolda Rd. Chapel, conducted
by Dr. Jeff ROBERTS. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home. Memorials may be made to Northwest Baptist Church, 407 Petree
Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
