Eliza (Neal) Burdick

The content of this page evolved as the result of my research on the KAPLE family of Allegany and Steuben Counties, New York with the marriage of Nellie BURDICK to Clarence P. KAPLE.  As a result of that union, a fabulous collection of photos, family bibles, and other documents were passed along the subsequent KAPLE generations.

Before Nellie BURDICK met and married Clarence KAPLE, she had married Ward PRIOR on Christmas day, 1896. They had a son named Hubertus B. PRIOR nearly a year later on December 7, 1897.

Unless otherwise noted, the photos and documents presented here are provided courtesy of Linda Kaple Hults of Worcester, Vermont.  It never ceases to amaze me how unique family treasures, such as Collins BURDICK's original Civil War discharge certificate, pass from person to person through the generations, ending up in the collections of distant relatives--if they survive at all.  What KAPLE family treasures are tucked away in a Burdick descendant's scrapbook or forgotten shoebox in the attic?  I am pleased to be able to share these BURDICK family treasures.

Cautions
There is great risk in reading too much into isolated pieces of information.   Imagine trying to figure out what an elephant looks like with only a toe, an ear, or just the snout as clues.   Available records, if we're able to find any at all, provide only a glimpse into a situation, often subject to the interpretation or limitations of the person recording it.   Personal stories and recollections add depth, reveal personalities, and help to illuminate the times of each generation.

I have tried to be diligent in recording the sources of my information so they can be judged by myself and others as to their reliability.   Just because a record exists does not mean it was recorded accurately, whether by the scribe or the original provider.   In any event, these records provide us with clues that could help verify our assumptions or point us in new directions.

Photographs
Photos help remind us that this is about more than facts and statistics; these were real people of flesh, bone, and blood.   They experienced the adventures of youth, the trials and tribulations of raising a family, the struggles of work and making ends meet, the joys of traditions, and the sorrows of loss.   Some died young; others lived long, fruitful lives.   Most of the photographs presented in this collection are of unidentified people.  Might a BURDICK relative have a photo just like it, but of whom the identity of the subject is known?  Any help or clues toward identifying them will be very appreciated.

Contributions
Any information, corrections, clippings, suggestions, and/or photos offered that will help weave the fabric and reveal the texture of this family's history will be appreciated.  Visitors to this site are encouraged to leave a message in the Guestbook that might be of interest to other researchers and family members.  Information to share?  Please contact me at vcapels@madriver.com.
