What IS a Second Cousin Once Removed?
Author Unknown
First cousins are family members who have two of the same grandparents in common, second cousins have the same great-grandparents in common, third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents and so on.

Removed indicates that the two people are from different generations. For example you and your first cousins are in the same generation so removed is not used to describe your relationship.  But your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation ahead of you.  Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference, three times removed means that there is a three-generation difference and so on.
