1860 SLAVE SCHEDULE, NEWTON COUNTY, MISSOURI

NEWTON COUNTY SLAVE OWNERS 1860

According to the summary tables for the 1860 Census, Newton County had a total population of 9,319 persons, of whom 426 were slaves (about 4.6%). My unproofed list of slaves below, taken from the Newton County slave schedule, shows essentially the same number. According to the summary tables, there were also 51 free persons of color in the county.

The 1860 Newton County census showed 115 slave owners or employers. Addison Brown was the largest owner with 18 slaves. Eleven owners including Brown had 10 or more, accounting for 147 total slaves. Nineteen owners had 5-9 slaves, accounting for another 110. Forty-six owners had only a single slave. Slaves were especially concentrated in Franklin Township (10.8% of the total population) and Van Buren Township (9.5%)

Two persons in Neosho Township in the 1860 census are listed as "stock traders," which may have been a euphemism for slave trader: Nathan Phillips with 6 slaves and William P. McGinnis with 15. Except for McGinnis, all of the 10+ slave owners in the county appear to have been farmers.

The 1860 census had separate population and slave schedules. The list of slave owners below combines information from the two. The first line, based on the population census, gives the owner's name, age and state of birth, occupation, real and personal property values, plus the population census page. The following line or lines, based on the slave census, give the number, sex and age of the owner's slaves. The census did not include slave names.
