Emil  Mickeerson
Wife was a Henry

A former resident of Ellis now living in Brighton, Colo., was fatally injured shortly before noon today when the car he was driving was hit by a Union Pacific mixed train on the east outskirts of WaKeeney.
Dead is Emil N. Mickelson, 77. His wife, the only passenger in the car, is in "serious" condition in the Trego County hospital in WaKeeney.
WaKeeney Chief of Police, George P. Valentine was a witness to the crash and told this story to the News.
"I had approached the crossing on U. S. 283 from the south about ll o'clock when the bells started ringing and lights flashed a warning of the Union Pacific mixed train, No. 369, coming from the east.
"I stopped for the train and saw the Mickelson car, a 1949 Kaiser, coming from the north. About 20 feet from the crossing the car almost stopped, but then went forward and halted on the railroad track. The train struck the vehicle in the side and rolled it down the track 35 feet.
"I'm not sure whether the couple was confused or something happened to the car. When they stopped on the tracks the train was so close I didn't have time to help them. It all happened too fast.
"Mr. Mickelson was thrown from the car to about 57 feet from the point of impact. His wife stayed with the car and when it came to a stop the she was lying on the ground with her legs pinned under the car."
The couple was rushed to the hospital where Mr. Mickelson died, about 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Chief Valentine said the death was the first fatality in WaKeeney since he became chief in July of 1951 and he believes there was none for a number of years before that.
Mr. and Mrs. Mickelson, were on their way to Hays for the funeral of Sherman Carley. Mrs. Mickelson and Mrs. Carley are sisters.
