WELCOME to the CARMACK Family Genealogy Mailing list. Save this message. Yes, it is a little long, but you don't need to memorize it - Einstein didn't know his own telephone number - why memorize when you can look it up? No, don't just *save* it, print it out & keep it handy when you need reference for the list commands & our list rules. List rules? You bet...I didn't make these rules up, most of these rules are standard things applicable to all Rootsweb Mailing Lists. First things, first.

Your list owner is Dale Carmack

This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in genealogy related to the CARMACK family, including

  • or any other related spelling.

To post a message to the list click the following link: CARMACK Family Mailing list.  You must be a subscriber to post a message.

Remember, a good Subject line will allow easy sorting of mail for list members as well as giving a good description of the topic for your target audience of cuzzins on this list.

Our mailing list resides on a Rootsweb server - if you appreciate the Rootsweb efforts in helping online genealogists, you can show your support by becoming a Rootsweb member like your listowner.

There is a lot of important information in this message, including general information about lists as well as specific information about this list. I'll be glad to help you if you have problems. Please take just a few minutes to read this message. Keep it so you can refer to it later. (bookmark this page)

  • Follow the instructions exactly - the server is not intelligent - it does what we tell it to do (even though it is called SMARTLIST!)
  • Speling counts when you send the [email protected] or [email protected] (a.k.a. smartlist) a command - if it is typed wrong - it probably won't work.
  • If you decide to leave the list, please unsubscribe.
  • If you change Internet service providers, please unsubscribe first, then re-subscribe with your new e-mail address.
  • If you go on vacation, please unsubscribe (there is no formal NOMAIL option within rootsweb's smartlist as there was with MAISER) until you return - this will keep your mailbox from getting overcrowded & will keep messages from bouncing.

If you forget to unsubscribe - you will be automatically unsubscribed after smartlist sees four (4) bounced messages.

  • Please do NOT send HTML messages to the list. Please verify that all messages sent to the list are sent as "plain text". Not all list members have the same email software and such. Also they are now being blocked by Rootsweb.
  • Please do not send your list commands (UNSUB/SUB/...) to [email protected] - this is the wrong address for these commands and they do not work when sent to there.
  • Please do not send binary files to the list (JPGs, GIFs, Bitmaps, etceteras,...). Send them directly to the people who ask for them. Also they are now being blocked by Rootsweb.
  • The list is set up for replies to the original poster if you are in MAIL mode & to the entire list if you are in DIGEST mode. Check your headers before making your replies - is the reply pertinent to the entire mailing list? If not, please change the "Mail To" from the list to the original poster.
  • Please do not send large files like GEDCOM attachments to the list. Send them directly to the people who ask for them.
  • Please do not send messages warning about any VIRUSES to the list - your computer cannot get a virus by reading an e-mail. E-mail is a text file. Viruses are executable files. However, you should be careful about downloading information sent to you since there are some viruses that like to reside in certain file types. To learn more about virus hoaxes, check these links:, ,
  • Please remember we do not all have access to the same operating systems or software or software versions - some list members do not have the latest version of your favorite software, so if you send a large Word 7.0 file attachment, you can potentially crash their systems if the system they use cannot handle the large attachment. Please ask what format to send before sending an attached file to a CARMACK listmember.
  • Please use mixed case in your message text - it is much easier to read than all CAPS (not to mention all CAPS is considered to be hollerin' on the net...)
  • Confused about the ;-) or the :> you see? check the following emoticon & acronym listing
  • Please remember not every listmember has the same experience with computers - we are all at different levels, so just because it is intuitive to you doesn't mean it is clear to everyone or anyone else. ;>
  • Additional "netiquette" info can be found at
  • No advertising is allowed on this list. If you have a source requiring payment that you feel would be helpful to other CARMACK cuzzins, send the information to me & I will add it to my mailing list resource webpage.
  • Your list owner is a *volunteer* - list ownership is not a paying position (in fact, I am paying Rootsweb for our list to exist - see RootsWeb for sponsorship details to improve our rootsweb servers) so I have to also work for a living and would like for this list to run smoothly...When subscribers do not follow the list rules, that means your list owner has less time for CARMACK research of his own. Whew, thanks for letting me say that... ...

I apologize to the experienced net users who may find these "rules" intuitive, but there are newbies out there who don't know all this & need to be able to avoid some of the pitfalls we've faced in the past.

Another problem lies with your mail handler. List servers automatically read your mail address off your incoming message. Your mail header MAY have the wrong address in it. If you suspect problems send yourself a message to find out your outgoing address.

If you have persistent problems, contact me direct!
