The Last One Hundred Years by Madge Carrington
I thought I would tell you a bit about the last 100 years. I was born on Saturday morning, January 16, 1904, at 6 o'clock."Saturday's child works hard for a living." That is the reason that I amso smart, industrious, and ambitious. Grandma Howell often said thatFrances F.D. and I worked to get out of work.
As I told you my first memory is of slipping into the parlor andseeing Grandma Lewis "laid out' on a cot and I always that all bodieswere.
The second thing that I remember is standing across the street infront of the Coburn house and seeing flames shooting out of the roof ofour house into the darkness. For a short time after the fire thatdestroyed our home, we lived with the Formy Duvall's. Then Papa boughtthe Moffit house on the corner of courthouse square where Papa built ourhouse. They used the dining room and the kitchen from the old house andtore down the rest. But this part of the house was fumigated becausesomeone had died of a contagious disease before we bought it. We rentedthe Dixon house while our new house was being built. We moved in when Iwas in the first grade.
My first grade teacher was Miss Rose, and I was in her wedding. Iwore a white organdy dress that had a pink ribbon sash - a big pinkribbon in my hair and I was beautiful. Mama had bought a pair of lovelyhand-painted vases for me to give Miss Rose for her wedding present. Iwas showing them to Frances F.D., and I dropped one and it broke into amillion pieces, and I cried and cried. I gave her just one. (Mama was alittle disgusted with her 6 year old.)
In the second grade, Miss Rose's sister who had a really funny eyehad me in her combination 1st and 2nd. I only remember the eye - nothingelse.
In the third grade Miss Faye Memory was my teacher. I loved her todeath and she talked through her nose - so I talked just like her andBess mocked me all the time. I cried, but with seven brother and sisterI did not talk like that long. Miss Faye has a Christmas party for allher 3rd graders. It was just wonderful. The room was dark except forthe fireplace, and we roasted marshmallows on broom straw, and I burnedeveryone of mine black. I did eat them so no one would see. The 3rdgrade was the year that I had to walk Gordon home from school everymorning for a month because he cried every day. (He was in the 1stgrade.)
My fourth grade memory is of Miss Moseley who smelled so good.
In the 5th grade my teacher was Miss Laura. I was scared to deathof her. Her husband divorced her which was terrible in those days, andshe was very bitter, BUT I learned the multiplication tables, parts ofspeech, and long division because of true fright.
Miss Brett, a huge woman, taught the 6th grade. One day a carpassed the window, (This was 1915, and cars were really rare.). We allgot up to look, and she started switching everywhere and the switch hitmy eyes. My eyes ran water the rest of the day and Mama was notpleased. Remember Papa was Chairman of the School Board. (It didn't dous any good but we still had it thrown up to us.
In the 7th grade Miss Heins, a great friend of Annie Reade's gave mestraight A's and treated me like a dog in school and sweet as honey whenshe was visiting us.
When I was in the 8th grade Mr. Ward was the math teacher. He triedto court Margaret Crowell, (Rone, Bill, and Jule's mother). Rone Sr. andMargaret had been courting for a long time, and Rone found out about Mr.Ward and came home from Massey's Business College in Richmond. Margaretdropped Mr. Ward. After that Mr. Ward picked on me to such an extentthat even Herbert Crowell who was Margaret's brother told his mother howbad it was. Mama must have written him a little note because it stoppedsuddenly, but they never told me that they had. Of course, Rone may havementioned something to Mr. Ward - We'll never know.
9th and 10th grades were not outstanding. But in the 11th grade weall had a grand time gossiping in the back of the room while the newteacher read out loud from the books. This was the year that we had anew teacher and a new principal. It was a wasted year. Remember I wassupposed to be valedictorian of our class, but all the girls said thatthe one boy in the class should be valedictorian so I was salutatorian -Jule wrote me a beautiful salutatorian address. One outstanding memoryof that year was how badly I wanted a Hofflin Middy suit. This was anavy blue serge middy blouse stitched with braid and a pleated skirt. It cost $25.00. I wanted it so much that Papa finally told Mama to go toWilmington and buy that suit. Papa couldn't stand for us to wantanything so bad and not have it; but Mama could. Fortunately, that wasthe required dress the next year at G.C. for freshman for pictures forthe annual.
During our high school days, Papa was teaching Sunday School, andthree of his boys, Clayton, Clater and Charley, would come over to ourhouse on the weekend. Clayton was in love with Bess who did not returnhis affections, but he brought wonderful Nunneley chocolate-coveredBrazil nuts which endeared him to the rest of the family - especiallyGordon. Someone asked me the other day what we did at night with noradio or TV. We played cards with Mama and Papa. Papa would cheat Mama;she would catch him and get so angry and he would laugh. We also read, sang, and made candy on the wood stove. Clayton, Clater, Charles, Bess, and I would make divinity fudge and put it up on the big turkey platteryou saw today with ________ on it.
After graduation I went to Greensboro College where my smart sisterBess was a junior. My biology teacher would come up behind me, lookthrough my microscope and say in a woeful tone, "And you're Miss Lewis'ssister".
I was supposed to learn Wooley's Handbook on English Grammar. (Bessdid; I didn't.) I needed to be able to write a theme - but I couldn'tbecause I had never written one so Bess had to correct mine or write itfor me. (She was so disgusted with me.) Besides I was so homesick thatI cried all the time. 7:00 A.M. and the bell rang to get up and Istarted crying - I cried till I came home for Christmas.
It was this Christmas that Papa died, and I stayed home with Mama,Richard, Gordon, Etta, and Jule. I was home for one and a half years,(December, 1921 - September, 1923), while Bess finished college. Duringthis time Aunt Renia died, and Aunt Mollie told the family that "BrotherDave" had told her she always had a home with him so she came to livewith us.
The outstanding event of my year and a half at home was I waselected to go to Wrightsville Beach as beauty queen to representWhiteville at the Lemithia Pavilion. I wore Bess's recital dress - ablue georgette crepe trimmed in white lace. It was bought, nothomemade. Mama and Jule took me, and I didn't win but I got to ride downthe street in a convertible with the top down.
After Bess graduated from college, Mama called the President ofG.C., Dr. Turentise. He said that they world let me make up the year anda half so that I could graduate with my class. But I had other ideas. Iwanted to go to State Teachers' College in Virginia where MargaretCrowell and Margaret High had gone. Mama agreed, but she was worriedbecause I world have to change trains and would be by myself. A friendof Mama's lived in Richmond so she had me picked up at the train stationand I spent the night with her. They put me on the train the next dayand I met a lot of other girls going to State Teachers' College. I hadmatured from my GC days so I didn't cry every night and morning atschool. I had a wonderful time except for 12 weeks I was campused forriding in a car on a Sunday night with a boy. It would have been only 6weeks, but they gave me another 6 weeks because I would not tell them theboy's name. (It was against school rules to ride in a car with boys.)
While I was home for Christmas after my 2nd year at Farmville, mygrades came and there was a note saying that I would have made the honorroll if I had been in my seat in chapel. Mama said to me, "I did notdemand high grades, but if the chapel seat is all that kept you off, BEin that seat." I was.
I graduated from college with a primary school certificate in 1925.I stayed home with Mama while Etta went to Woman's College in Greensboro.(UNCG) Then I taught in Jacksonville and came to Sanford in 1927.
Now it's time to tell you about my love life. In the summer of1924, I was going with Joe and Zeb. I managed to keep both of them mysenior year at college. For my college graduation, Joe gave me a Spanishshawl, and Zeb gave me a diamond cluster ring. Finally Zeb got mad andsaid that I gave Joe all the choice dates so I gave Zeb his ring and hisfraternity pin back
While I was teaching in Jacksonville, Joe and I broke up. . GrandmaHowell, Mama, Richard, Rone, Jule, Annie Reade, Bess and Etta alldisliked Joe so I didn't marry him. Bess was in Sanford so I came toSanford and taught the 1st grade. A high school teacher, Hal, took hismeals at the same place I did. I felt that I had to be in love all thetime so he was a blip in my life.
Then Roscoe saw me coming down the steps of the Monroe house in mylittle red boots, and got a mutual friend to introduce us. Hemanufactured a business trip to Whiteville and asked me if I would liketo ride down with him. (He didn't ask Bess and our courtship began.)
We met in January and in February I had to have surgery for acuteappendicitis. While recuperating in the hospital Roscoe and others cameto visit and I was under the covers and on the bedpan. They stayedforever and every doctor and nurse in the hospital knew about the bedpanand were having a grand time laughing.
We were married in July. If you married, you had to quit teachingso I quit.
Roscoe always said I was from the swamps and he wanted to show mesome hills so we went to the mountains on our honeymoon. We stopped inCharlotte and saw our first talking movie. We had had silent movies inWhiteville for a long time but this was our first talkie.
During ourmarried life we lived in Sanford, Hickory, Emporia and Whiteville.
We loved Sanford and Whiteville best of all. Finally after 11 years andat age 35 Roscoe and I were blessed with a daughter. Jule was soimpressed that he asked to borrow Grandma Howell's bed because Jule andRuby wanted a baby, too!
I fell from grace from the Methodist Church to the Presbyterian andenjoyed the Women of the Church and the Bible Study, which I taught foryears. I loved to play bridge and have enjoyed my Literary Club for 70years now.
After Roscoe had to retire because of his health, I went back to teachingin 1962.
Roscoe died in 1967 and I stopped teaching in 1969.
When I was 90 I wrote the "100 year History of the Women of the FirstPresbyterian Church" for the Centennial history book published by theChurch.
Six and a half years ago I sold my house and moved in with Bess.
I've had a happy life; there have been sad times and problems but I'vealways loved and been loved. I have thanked God regularly for sendingJesus into the world and giving us love and eternal life. Bess and I love all of you dearly.
