Joseph SMITH, b. ca. 1842, came to America with his mother at age 3. Immigrated from the Madeira Island (off the coast of Spain) after leaving Portugal for religious freedom. Came to New York and took a freight train to Jacksonville, IL. Joseph changed surname to SMITH from FERRIERA sometime after coming to this country. Joseph married Ellen GOVEIA (sp?) and had the following children: Joseph, Arthur, Bertha, Kathryn, Earl (my line), George, William, Ben, Dora, Laura. Click here for more information about the SMITHS
