General Notes (Husband)

Another source has his birthplace being in Holland

Herman Kinkey was born 1672 in Hamburg, Germany. He is said to have been the son of John KINKEY. He arrived in Delaware in the late l600's apparently from Holland. Around 1700 and immigrant named Hereman Konke settled on Red Bank Creek, New Castle County, Pennsylvanie (now Delaware). He bought 350 acres there in 1702 and sold it n 1725. A deed is on file at the Cecil County Maryland Court House for 600 acres he bought 5 September 1717 from Ephraim Aug ustine HERMAN and wife Isabella in Cecil County, Maryland, part of Saint John's Manor, lying along the north side of Elk River. The price was 165 pounds current silver money of Maryland. It confirmed the fact that Harman KANKEY had been a resident of New Castle upon Delaware in the territories of Pennsylvania when he bought this land. During this time records were kept by the county clerks who apparently spelled by sound. The name was thus spelled a variety of ways. The first name as Hereman, Herman, Hermon and Harman. The last name as Konke, Kinke, Kanke, Kinche, Kinkey, and Kankey. The spelling Kankey became predominant during the mid l700's. Other spellings disappear in the early l800's. An act for the naturalization of Herman Kinkee,a Dutch man, and his children was passed in April 1720. Although this record refers to Hereman as a "Dutchman" does not prove Dutch descent. Most referred to as Dutch during this time period were in fact German. For example the Pennsylvania Dutch who were German. The German word for themselves is "Deutsch " pronounced "doutch." This is confused with people from t he Netherlands. Attempts to locate where the name originated key in a region just north of Hamburg, Germany. Herman married Margery about l692 in Cecil County, Maryland. Little is known of her heritage. Suggestions hav e been made she was a member of the Harman family who originally settled Saint John's Manor but nothing has been prov en. Herman and Margery had four children. He and his son, John, ran a ferry on Elk Neck and he is said to have kept a tavern. His plantation was in Elk Neck. Grandson Her man Husband was an early rebel in North Carolina and consid ered the first settler of Somerset, Pennsylvania. Grandson John Kankey was a private in the militia. Great-grandson Zebul n was a Methodist preacher. Heremann Kankey died in the spring of 1732. He will as recorded by the county clerk begins: "In the name of God Amen this twenty second day of Aprell in the year of our Lord God One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Two I Harman Kankey of Siscell County in Maryl and being sick and wake of body but of perfect mind and mem ory thanks to God but calling to mind the mortality of my body and kno wing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make a nd ordain this my last will and testament." He left his wife, Margery, the new dwelling house on t he plantation during her life and one third of his personal estate. To John, his son, he left all his land along the Elk River and other two thirds of the personal estate . To Catherren and Margery, his eldest daughters, each 115 pound s of the current money of Pennsylvania. To his daughter Mary a tract of land near Octorarah. Marjorie died about 1740 in Cecil County, Maryland. The location of their graves has not yet been found.
