member of Alameda Elks Club, veteran of World War I.

Edward M. Degen, 65, of Bismarck, former Jamestown
resident, died, Thursday in St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 12 noon in the Cathedral
of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with Msgr. William F. Garvin officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Jamestown.
Rosary will be said Sunday at 7 p.m., in Nickisch-Ressler Funeral
Chapel, Bismarck.
Born March 26, 1907, in Jamestown, Mr. Degen was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Michael C. Degen. He
was employed with the North Pacific Railroad for 45 years, moving to
Bismarck in 1943 when he became ticket agent.
He retired from railroad service o March 17, 1969, as chief
clerk, due to ill Health. His
marriage to Clara Ficker took place Nov. 11, 1939, in St. Mary’s
Catholic Church at Bismarck. He was a member of the Cathedral of the
Holy Spirit, Elks Lodge, and B.A.R.U.
Mr.
Degen is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Ronald Barron
(Carole) and Miss Kathy Degen, Bloomington, Minn. and Miss Marilyn
Degen, New Brighton, Minn.; two grandchildren, Kari Lynn and David
Barron; two brothers, Bernard Degen, Oakland, Calif.; and Carl Degen,
Vallejo, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs. John Tanata (Theresa), Mora,
Minn., and Mrs. Tom McClain (Leona), Toccoa, Ga.

Dies Thursday At Trinity Hospital
George J. Degen, 54, Jamestown,
died Thursday afternoon at Trinity Hospital.
Requiem Mass will be said at St.
James Catholic Church, Monday at 9 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Hendrickson in
Calvary Cemetery.
Rosary and Prayers for the dead
will be said Sunday at 8 p.m. in Daly-Peterson Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Degen was born April 4, 1905,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Degen of Jamestown. He attended
St. John' Academy and was employed by Yellow Cab for a number of years
until 1951, when he went to Alameda, Calif. He returned to
Jamestown last May. He is a member of the St. James Catholic
Church.
Survivors include a son, Gerald
M., Ventura, Calif.; a daughter, Marcia Degen, Pt. Hueneme, Calif.; three
brothers, Bernard, Oakland, Calif.; Carl, Vallejo, Calif. and Edward,
Bismarck; and three sisters, Mrs. John (Theresa) Tanata and Mrs. Anna
Tschider, Jamestown, and Mrs. Thomas (Leona) McClain, Toccoa, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his
parents and two sisters.

LAID TO REST IN
CALVARY
CEMETERY
Requiem mass for Mrs. Justina Degen, who died
February 23, after lingering illness, was offered in St. James
Catholic Church Saturday morning by Rev. M. Mueller with St. John’s
Academy
choir singing.
Tribute to the deceased, a member of St. James Church for many
years was paid by Msgr. E. Geraghty.
Interment was in Calvary
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Peter and
Frank Kouschowski, Peter and Matt Tanata and Fred and Albert Falk.
Attending in bodies were members of St. Mary’s Court of WCOF,
and St. Catherine’s Circle of the Tabernacle Society.
Mrs. Degen, widow of Michael Degen, was born August 28, 1875, in
South Russia, and 16 years later came to Courtenay vicinity.
She and Mr. Degen were married Nov. 15, 1898 in St. James
Catholic Church and this city since has been the family home.
Mrs. Degen was the mother of nine children, seven of whom are
living. They are Bernard,
San Pablo, Cal., Carl of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. John Tanata and
George of Jamestown, Edward of Bismarck, Mrs.
Roy
Tschider of
Turtle
Lake
and Mrs. T.L. McClain, Social
Circle,
Ga.
Mr. Degen died March 6,
1945, a daughter Mrs. Edward Prodzinski on December 28, 1948, and an
infant daughter, Margaret Frances in 1917 (1915).
She also leaves 17 grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Anton
Schaller, Jamestown, Gertrude Falk, Sykeston and Mrs. Elizabeth Schwede,
Leizig, Sask., Canada, and nine brothers, John Falk of Jamestown, Martin
and Tony of Wimbledon, Jacob of Parkside, Sask. Canada, Fred, Peter,
Albert, Joseph, and August of Courtenay.
Attending the services were Carl of San Francisco, Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Degen , Bismarck, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tschider of Turtle Lake, and
Mrs. Frank Hyduke, St. Paul, Minn.

C. MICHAEL DEGEN RETIRED RAILWAY
PIPEFITTER, DIES
C. Michael Degen,
retired Northern Pacific pipefitter, died at his home Tuesday afternoon
at 3:40 o’clock. He had
been in poor health for some time.
Mr. Degen was born in Germany September 6,
1871. He came from Germany
when 21 years old to Jamestown and was employed by the Northern Pacific
for 42 years. He retired
July 1, 1937. Mr. Degen and
Justina Falk were married at St. James Catholic Church Nov. 15, 1898.
They have always made Jamestown their home.
They are the parents of nine children, one of whom died in
infancy. Mr. Degen was a
member of St. James Catholic Church.
Survivors are the
widow and the following sons and daughters: Mail Man Third Class Leona
Degen, United States Navy, San Diego, Calif., who is here; Bernard,
Berkeley, Calif.; Carl, Vallejo, Calif.; Mrs. Edward Prodzinski, Fried;
George J., Jamestown; Edward M., Bismarck; Mrs. John Tanata, Courtenay;
and Mrs. Roy Tschider, Jamestown; 14 grandchildren and a sister Mrs.
Minnie Zacher, Jamestown.
Rosary will be said
Thursday evening at 8 o’clock by the Foresters and Friday night after
devotions at the Daly Funeral Home, by the members of the Tabernacle
Society and St. Catherine’s Circle.
Requiem
mass will be offered Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock at St. James
Catholic Church. Burial will
be made in Calvary

The funeral for John F. Tanata,
72, Jamestown, N.D., will be there at 10 Monday in St. James Catholic
Church. He died Friday. Born Jan. 1, 1908, at Stewart, Minn., Mr.
Tanata lived at Eden, S.D., before moving to Courtenay, N.D., in 1919
where the family farmed. He married Theresa Degen Sept. 23,
1936, at Jamestown. They moved to Jamestown in 1946 where he
operated a well drilling business and owned the Blue Moon and Interstate
Motel. He retired to Mora, Minn., in 1973. They returned to
Jamestown in 1978, survivors include his wife; three daughters and tow
sons, Mrs. Richard (Elaine) Gillingham, Garden City, Mich.; Mrs. Charles
(Norma Jean) Grant, Hibbing, Minn.; Mrs. Donald (Mary Ann) Siebert,
Jamestown; Dennis, Rockford, Ill.; William, Stoughton, Pa.; a brother
and two sisters, Joseph, Tacoma, Wash.; Mrs. Kay Apitz, Helena, Mont.,
Mrs. Bert (Bertha) Hughes, in Washington; and 12 grandchildren.

Theresa Regina Tanata, 86, Jamestown, died
Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at her home.
Theresa Regina Degen was born Dec. 2, 1910, at
Jamestown, the daughter of C. Michael and Justina (Falk) Degen.
She grew up in Jamestown and attended St. John's Academy. She was
employed as a homemaker and worked in the laundry at Trinity
Hospital. She married John F. Tanata Sept 23, 1936, at The
Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. They lived on a farm near
Courtenay, ND. In 1946 they moved back to Jamestown. In 1973 they
retired and moved to Mora, Minn. In 1978 they returned to
Jamestown, due to ill health. He died in 1980.
She was a member of the Basilica of St. James
and a life member of St. James Tabernacle Society. She played
organ at St. Michaels Church, Courtenay.
She is survived by three daughters, Elaine
(Dick) Gillingham, Pigeon, Mich., Norma Jean (Charles) Grant, Hibbing,
Minn., and Mary Ann (Donal) Siebert, Jamestown; two sons, Dennis
(Wilma), Edmunds, ND, and William, Fargo; a sister Leona McClain,
Toccoa, GA.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
parent, four brothers and three sisters.
Services: 10:30 am Saturday, The Basilica of St. James, Jamestown
Prayer Service: 7 pm, Friday, Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: 9 am to 9 pm, Friday at the funeral chapel, and one
hour before the service Saturday at the church.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

Mrs. Anne
Tschider Dies Here; Rites Set Friday Morning
Mrs. Anne Marie Tschider,
Jamestown, widow of the late Roy F. Tschider, died Tuesday morning at
Trinity Hospital where she had been a patient for four weeks. She
had been in failing health for several months.
Born Aug. 14, 1913 in Jamestown,
Mrs. Tschider was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Degen. She
grew up here and was graduated from St. John's Academy. She was
employed here at the Moline Cafe for a few years. Her marriage to
Roy F. Tschider took place here Oct. 8, 1938 and they made their home in
Jamestown until moving to Mandan in 1942. Two years later they
returned to Jamestown and in 1946 they moved to Turtle Lake. Mr.
Tschider , and employee of the Northern Pacific Railway, was injured in
a train wreck Sept. 21, 1950 near Hurdsfield and died on Oct. 1 of the
same year. After his death Mrs. Tschider and the children returned
to Jamestown where she made her home since.
She was a member of St. James
Catholic Church, St. Catherine's Circle, and the B.P.O. Does.
Surviving are three sons, Gordon,
Stephen and Douglas, all at home; three brothers, Bernard Degen,
Oakland, Calif.; Carl Degen, Vallejo, Calif., and Bernard [Edward]
Degen, Bismarck; - two sisters, Mrs. John F. Tanata (Theresa),
Jamestown, and Mrs. T. L. McClain (Leona), Toccoa, Ga. she was
preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and two sisters.
Rosary will be recited for Mrs.
Tschider this evening at 8 o'clock at the Daly-Peterson Funeral Chapel.
Requiem Mass will be said for her
Friday at 9:30 a.m. in St. James Church with Rev. Thomas Hendrickson,
pastor, celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Requiem Mass for Roy F. Tschider,
Northern Pacific conductor, who was fatally burned in a wreck near
Hurdsfield, was said at St. James Catholic church this morning at 9 a.m.
Rev Allen Nilles, assistant
pastor of St. James, offered the Mass. St. John’s Academy choir sang.
Monsignor Edward J. Geraghty, gave the sermon.
Burial was made in Calvary
cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Eckroth, E. A. Smith, D. B. Sorenson,
Guy Ingle, K. W. Burton, and Joseph Carlascio.
Mr. Tschider was the third victim
of the accident, the others being Henry Lee, engineer, and Albert
Wagner, fireman. Mr. Tschider was the brakeman on the train and was
riding on the engine which tipped over.
Coming from a distance for the
services were John Tschider, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kreier and
daughter, Harriet, Mr. and Mrs. William Erickson, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory

and Mrs. John Amundson, Moorhead, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Degen,
Bismarck; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Perri, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Heiget, and
Mrs. Joseph Elligson, Riverdale. There were many from Jamestown,
Wimbledon and Courtenay in attendance.
