Christian Niess, former Tappen resident, dies in Bismarck.  Christian Niess, 69 [72], formerly of Tappen, died at a Bismarck Hospital, on Monday, March 25.  He had been a patient at the hospital for three days.  He was born June 17, 1873 in Russia.  He was a member of the Evangelical Church.  He had been making his home at the Baptist Nursing home in Bismarck for sometime.

He is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth in 1930 and his son Henry in 1939.  He is survived by ten (10) sons – John, Chris, Fred, Jake, Ed, Harold, Dave, Dan, George & Bill and three (3) daughters – Rose Briese, Martha Briese, and E. Vera Everson.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tappen Evangelical Church.

Mrs. Chris Niess, Tappen, Dies Here

Mrs. Elizabeth Niess, wife of Chris Niess of near Tappen, and mother of John Chris Niess of Jamestown passed away this morning at 4:30 O’clock death being caused from the after effects of an operation performed last week.

The deceased was 52 years of age and was born in Russia .  She has lived in this country for a long period of time.   Last winter her son [David] was seriously burned when a gasoline lamp exploded in his hands.

The family moved from Russia 27 years ago and lived at Carrington for a short time, then came to Jamestown where they made their home for five years and then moved to a farm south of Tappen.

The husband and a large family of children survive.  These include John and Chris Niess of Jamestown; Fred and Jacob of Tappen, Mrs. Frank Briese and Mrs. J. H. Briese who live north and south of Tappen respectively; Henry of St. Paul, Minn.; Edward E. of Medina and the following at home, George, Emma, William, Daniel and David.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Evangelical church at Tappen and burial will be at Tappen and burial will be made in the churchyard there.
