Phillip and Carolina immigrated to America in 1899. They first settled in South Dakota, 18 miles from Eureka. After one year they moved to North Dakota where they homestead nine miles northeast of Gackle, North Dakota. They traveled from Eureka to Gackle by horse and wagon, when the roads were just wagon trails. The family arrived during the early winter of 1900 in a snow storm.. there were no stores a Gackle in 1900 and they had to make trips to Windsor, North Dakota. for supplies and mail.
Phillip retired from the farm in 1913 and he and Caroline moved to Gackle. Before the end of World War I, they moved to Jamestown, North Dakota; selling their home and living with their children. They spent most of their time with daughter Lydia (Mrs. Sam Reuie), whose husband was the minister of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Phillip was in a wheel chair the last seven years of his life. He was completely blind the last two years. He is buried at the Gackle County Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery. At age 81 Phillip suffered a stroke, and died at age 88.
