Dean C. Gackle, 60, Kulm, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, in St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck.

Mr. Gackle was born July 12, 1943, near Edgeley, N.D. He grew up and attended school near Kulm. He served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Kulm, where he farmed. On July 5, 1966, he married Linda Kalmbach in LaMoure, N.D. They lived in Kulm. He worked for Carlson-Sjostrom Implement before going to work for the city of Kulm in 1986.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Victor, Kulm; two daughters, Jeanette (Thomas) Henderson, LaMoure, Susan, Chaffee, N.D.; two brothers, Russell (Ruby), Kulm, Larry (Betty), Mineola, Texas; a sister, Dorothy (Ray) Nill, Kulm; and three grandchildren.

Visitation: Monday from 1 to 7, with a prayer service at 7, in Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.
Funeral: Tuesday at 10 in Assembly of God Church, Kulm.

Linda Gackle, 57, Kulm, N.D., died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, N.D.

Linda Kalmbach was born Dec. 12, 1947, in Kulm, the daughter of Albert and Amelie (Elhard) Kalmbach. She grew up and attended school in Kulm. She married Dean Gackle on July 5, 1966, in LaMoure, N.D. They lived in Kulm. He died Feb. 25, 2004.

She is survived by a son, Victor, Kulm; two daughters, Jeanette (Thomas) Henderson, LaMoure, and Susan Gackle, Alice, N.D.; a brother, Melvin (Shirley), Pawpaw, Mich.; two sisters, Lois Davidson and Irene Wallace, both Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Assembly of God Church, Kulm.

Margaret Gackle, 82, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Margaret Irene Kreutsberg was born October 6, 1927 northwest of Berlin, ND, the daughter of Fred and Hazel (Spitzer) Kreutsberg. She graduated from grade school in North Dakota and from Jefferson High School in Sioux City, IA. She then attended Vennard College in University Park, Iowa. On August 3, 1957, Margaret married James Gackle. They farmed near Edgeley, ND and later moved to the family farm near Dickey, ND.

Margaret was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Jamestown. She enjoyed music and was the church organist.

Margaret is survived by her husband, James, Jamestown; two sons, Andrew (Shirley) Gackle, Benton Harbor, MI and Daniel (Mary Kay) Gackle, Jamestown; one daughter, Diane (Kevin) Mooney, Fernandina Beach, FL; and three granddaughters, Carolyn and Kate Mooney and Tia Gackle.

Robert O. Gackle, 79, Kulm, N.D., died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Gackle was born March 26, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Otto and Alice (Higdem) Gackle. The family moved to Kulm in 1927, where his father joined his brothers in the family business, Gackle Bros. Inc. He was confirmed at First Congregational Church, Kulm. He graduated from Kulm High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as quartermaster on a command ship in the South Pacific. He participated in five invasions, including those at Borneo and the Philippines. After his discharge he returned to Kulm to work at Gackle Brothers. He married Bernice Laeger on Oct. 26, 1947, at the Laeger farm. He continued to work with his uncles and father until he, along with his wife and son, purchased the business in 1973. In 1988 they added a location in Wishek, N.D., and in January 1999 they sold the implement dealership to Dave Meyer, ending 106 years of farm equipment sales. They received an award for being one of the longest running family-owned dealerships in North Dakota. They also owned a hardware store that was sold to Dale Gackle in 2000. He served as fire chief for 15 years, city alderman for two years and mayor for 20 years. He also served on the State Law Enforcement Council for eight years and on the LaMoure County Housing Board for several decades. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Kulm, American Legion, Elks, Jamestown Elks Band, Jamestown Drum and Bugle Corps and Devils Lake Elks Band. He joined the Kulm City Band in 1937 and served as manager since 1970. He enjoyed singing old tunes and hymns, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, water-skiing and tobogganing.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Wesley (Cheryl), Kulm; two daughters, Roberta Gackle and Ann (Mike) Potts, both Fargo; and six grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Kulm Congregational Church, Kulm.
Prayer service: 7:30 p.m. today, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.

Mercedes Gader, age 91, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Glenfield, ND, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at her home.

Mercedes Arvella Sorenson was born on March 24, 1918, the daughter of Arthur and Ann (Torgerson) Sorenson at Glenfield, ND. She was raised and attended school at Glenfield and graduated in 1936.

On October 11, 1939, Mercedes was united in marriage to Charlie Gader at Carrington, ND. They lived in Glenfield where she raised her family. Charlie died on December 30, 1975. In June 2008, she moved to Jamestown.

Mercedes enjoyed her family and grandchildren. She was a baptized and a lifetime member of the Glenfield Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and Glenfield Homemakers. She enjoyed cooking, quilting with the church women and driving her golf cart. She was an avid reader and later when her eyesight failed, she enjoyed listening to audio books.

Mercedes is survived by four sons, Myron (Corinne Zenker) Gader, Bismarck, ND, Bruce Gader, West Fargo, ND, Tim (Gail) Gader, Glenfield, ND, Brian (Kristy) Gader, Napoleon, ND; one daughter, Joanne (Dennis) Nygord, Jamestown, ND; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charlie; one sister, Elda; a half sister, Mabel; and a half brother, Ervin.

Hertha Gall, 84, Wishek, N.D., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Wishek Nursing Home, Wishek.

Hertha Ketterling was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Zeeland, N.D., the daughter of Christian and Rosina (Schwindt) Ketterling. She grew up on the family farm near Zeeland and attended rural school in McIntosh County. When she was a young woman she moved with her family to Wishek. She married Henry Gall Jr. on Aug. 21, 1938, in Wishek. They lived and farmed on the Gall family farm. In 1941, they purchased the family farm and lived there until 1965 when they moved into Wishek. She did farm work and later worked at the Mobil Oil Bulk Dealership in Wishek, where she was an accountant. She was an active member of United Church of Christ Church, Wishek and Martha’s Ladies Aid since 1940. She sang in the church choir and Women’s Ladies Aid Quartet and Trio. She enjoyed singing and cooking.

She is survived by a son, James, Tucson, Ariz.; five daughters, Henrietta (Clarence) Fiechtner, Fargo, N.D., Donna (Harvey) Miller, Wyndmere, N.D., Marlys (Tom) Kienzle, Mandan, N.D., JoAnn Gall, Belle Fourche, S.D., and Ann Marie Parks, Copell, Texas; a sister, Edna Rauh, Minneapolis, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; stepfathers, Christ Opp and Christof Just; four brothers, Otto, Paul, Gottfried and Ferdinand; two sisters, Pauline Rudolf and Ida Bechtle; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, United Church of Christ Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Tammy Toepke-Floyd officiating.

Elsie Ganser, 92, Jamestown, formerly Cleveland, N.D., died Sunday May 19, 2002, Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Elsie Irene Matousek was born Sept. 29, 1909, at Eastman, Wis., the daughter of John and Barbara (Bertsch) Matousek. She grew up on the family dairy farm and was educated in country schools. She worked with her family on the farm and was also employed in a cannery in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She married Frank Ganser on Jan. 5, 1932, at Prairie du Chien. They lived on a farm near Cleveland. They farmed until moving into Cleveland in 1953. He died in 1976. Following his death, she moved into the Gardenette Apartments, Jamestown. In 1994 she entered Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown. She was a member of The Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. She was formerly a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church, Windsor, N.D. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed nature, fishing, berry picking, cooking and embroidery.

She is survived by three sons, Francis (Elizabeth), Cleveland, and John (Judy) and Bob (Carol), both Jamestown; four daughters, Annette (Jerry) Carlson and Betty (Vince) Ament, both Jamestown, and Mary (Dale) Zillmer, Henning, Minn., and Barbara (Alan) Huseth, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; a sister, Anna Nagel, LaCrosse, Wis.; a brother, Joe, Prairie du Chien; 30 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a daughter, Dorothy Ann, two brothers, Elmer and Alvin; and a sister, Mary Heitz.

Francis Ganser, 74, Cleveland, N.D., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, N.D., from complications after surgery.

Mr. Ganser was born Feb. 18, 1933, at Trinity Hospital, Jamestown, the son of Frank and Elsie (Matosek) Ganser. He grew up in the Cleveland and Windsor, N.D., area and attended Cleveland High School, Cleveland. He married Elizabeth Oliver on Oct. 22, 1953, in Bozeman, Mont. He worked on an associated pipeline for one year then worked road construction for Northern Improvement (formerly Noel Company) for 39 years. He retired in 1995 but continued to help the Bair Farms north of Windsor. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, reading, cooking, tinkering, fixing cars and was called the "Duct Tape King."

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mark (Dee), Cleveland, and Tim (Shari), Windsor; a daughter, Sue (Doug Geeting) Ganser, Cleveland; four sisters, Betty (Vince) Ament, Annette (Jerry) Carlson, both of Jamestown, Barbara (Allen) Hueseth, Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Mary (Dale) Zillmer, Henning, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Judy Ganser and Carol Ganser, both of Jamestown; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Bob; a sister, Dorothy Ann; and a great-grandchild, Madison Hoyt.

Robert "Bob" Ganser, 62, Jamestown, North Dakota died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Jamestown Hospital.

Bob was born May 21, 1945 in Jamestown, ND, the son of Frank and Elsie (Matousek) Ganser. He grew up in the Windsor/Cleveland, ND area and attended Cleveland High School. Bob married Diane Rott in January 1964. They raised three children together. On December 1, 1979 Bob married Carol Gaustad in Jamestown. They had one daughter. Bob worked for his sister & brother-in-law, Annette and Jerry Carlson, and for various construction companies in the Jamestown area. Bob recently retired from the Jamestown Street Department. He enjoyed driving in the country, hunting, fishing, cooking, collecting trinkets and antiques, socializing with friends and family and raiding his many friend's gardens.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol, of Jamestown; one son, Steve (Carol) Ganser, Fargo, ND; three daughters, Vickie (Ron) Reuer, Jamestown, Sandra (Shawn) Parkinson, Fargo and Elizabeth (Nolen Peterson) Ganser, Oakes, ND; seven grandchildren, Niccole Olson (Brian Bjerke), Fargo, Alyssa Wagner, Jamestown, Alexis Ganser, Taylor Ganser, Sierra Parkinson, Cayden Ganser, all of Fargo and Hanna Reuer, Jamestown; four sisters, Betty (Vincent) Ament and Annette (Jerry) Carlson, both of Jamestown, Barbara (Allen) Huseth, Menomonee Falls, WI and Mary (Dale) Zillmer, Henning, MN; one brother, Francis (Elizabeth) Ganser, Cleveland, ND and one sister-in-law, Judy Ganser, Jamestown.

GLENDIVE – Ottillia "Tillie" Gehnert, age 92, of Glendive, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at Zion Lutheran Church with Lay Pastoral Associate Avis Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson County Cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.

Tillie was born on Aug. 30, 1908, in Napoleon, N.D., the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Himmerich) Opp. She attended school in North Dakota. She married Andrew Gehnert on July 6, 1930, in Napoleon. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1971.

She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, the American Legion Auxiliary and Zion Lutheran Church.

Tillie was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one son, one daughter, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, two sons-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Survivors include two daughters, Lina Brenner and Lucille Anderson, both of Glendive; two sons, Harold Gehnert of Greycliff and Arthur Gehnert and his wife Barbara of Glendive; five brothers, August Opp of Dickinson, N.D., Edward Opp and his wife Alma of Gackle, N.D., Reinhold Opp and his wife Esther of Napoleon, N.D., Arthur Opp and his wife Alice of Medina, N.D., and Benny Opp and his wife Genny of Streeter, N.D.; one sister, Frieda Rau of Streeter, N.D.; 19 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Edwin Geigle, 75, Jamestown, N.D., will be at 2 Friday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown. Visitation will be from 9 to 9 today and Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday, in Haut Chapel, Jamestown, and one hour before services in the church. He died Sunday, Dec. 31, 1995.

Mr. Geigle was born April 4, 1920, in Gackle, N.D. He attended school in Medina, N.D. He farmed in the Gackle area until 1950. On March 17, 1950, he married Trudella "Daisey" Sahr in Jamestown. They farmed near Montpelier, N.D., until moving in 1980 to Ypsilanti, N.D. He worked at the North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown until retiring in 1988. She died in 1986. Wilbert Henry Geigle, 74, Jamestown, N.D., died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, on his farm near Montpelier, N.D.

Mr. Geigle was born March 5, 1925, near Medina, N.D., where he attended school. He later attended school near Cleveland, N.D., where he grew up and farmed with his family. On March 17, 1946, he married Eileen Heine in Alfred, N.D. They farmed near Cleveland, and later farmed near Gackle, N.D. In 1957 they began farming near Jamestown, where he also worked for JC Penney Co. for a few years. She died in 1982.

In 1987 he married Elda Koenig. They lived near Jamestown for two years before retiring to Jamestown. In 1997 he began working for Aviko Co., Jamestown. ...

Dani Geinert, 52, Gackle, N.D., died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Mr. Geinert was born May 22, 1957, in Gackle, the son of Ralph and Louise (Ziemann) Geinert. He grew up and received his education at Gackle Public School and graduated from Gackle High School in 1975. He graduated from Bismarck (N.D.) Junior College in 1976. He married Lori Kalmbach on Feb. 9, 1979, at United Church of Christ, Gackle. They lived in Gackle where they owned and operated Dani’s Place. He was a member of United Church of Christ, Gackle Fire Department, Gackle Fire District Board, Gackle Community Development Board, Gackle Co-op Board, Gackle Duckfest, Gackle Wildlife and Gackle Lions.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Myles (Jen), Jamestown; his mother, Wishek, N.D.; three brothers, Erich (Cathee), Carson, Wash., Orrin (Anita), Gurley, Ariz., and Craig (Mary), Helena, Mont.; four sisters, Kathleen (Howard) Rolfe, Palermo, N.D., Lynea Geinert, St. Paul, Minn., Kristee (Karl) Freadoff, Judson, N.D., and Wendy (Grant) Stieger, Argusville, N.D.; his mother-in-law, Anna Kalmbach, Wishek; a brother-in-law, Wayne Kalmbach, Bowman, N.D.; and a granddaughter.

Della L. Geinert, 59, Merrill, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Della was born Feb. 17, 1946, in Gackle, N.D., daughter of the late Aaron and Esther (Kurtz) Reich. She married Lee Geinert on March 30, 1962, in Jamestown, N.D. She worked in Minnesota as an NC Programmer for 15 years at Holladay Circuits. For the last three years she owned and operated Geinert Family Farm Adult Care in Wausau.

Della was known for her creativity and expressed this in her quilting, painting and crafts. She was an excellent cook and will be lovingly remembered for her sourdough bread and pie crusts. She had a great reverence for nature and loved animals, sunsets and gardening. Della taught unconditional love by living it.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Geinert of Merrill; two daughters, April (fiancee, Kevin Emigh) Geinert of Wausau and Anita (Mark) Knowlton of Eden Prairie, Minn.; one son, Aaron (Ruth) Geinert of Merrill; her "adopted" daughter, Rhonda Irwin of Merrill; three siblings, Melvin (Twila) Reich of Tampa, Fla., Norma (Marvin) Geinert of Backus, Minn. and Maynard Reich of Texas; seven grandchildren, Krystal, Nicole, Mitchell, Elizabeth, Brandon, Tonya and Anissa; and two great-grandchildren, Kurt and Makenzie. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gerald Reich.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Highland Community Church in Wausau. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Hinds will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Helke Funeral Home in Wausau.

Ralph Geinert, 84, Alfred, N.D., died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Wishek (N.D.) Home of the Aged.

Mr. Geinert was born April 16, 1924, near Jud, N.D., the son of Michael and Minnie (Entzminger) Geinert. He attended the local rural school where he received his elementary education and grew up in the area. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 25, 1945, at Jefferson, Mo. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was discharged Nov. 20, 1946, at Fort Bliss, Texas, with rank of private first class. He married Louise Ziemann on Sept. 17, 1948, at Jamestown. They lived in Alfred where he worked at the grain elevator until 1949 when he went to work at the Sydney Elevator where he worked until 1950. From 1959 to 1976 he worked in road construction. He worked for Solinger Lumber from 1976 until 1984. He then helped his brother, Roy, on the farm. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, N.D., and the American Legion for 48 years.

He is survived by his wife, Wishek; four sons, Erich (Cathee), Carson, Wash., Orrin (Anita), Gurley, Ariz., Craig (Mary), Helena, Mont., and Dani (Lori), Gackle; four daughters, Kathleen (Howard) Rolfe, Palermo, N.D., Lynea Geinert, St. Paul, Minn., Kristee (Karl) Freadoff, Judson, N.D., and Wendy (Grant) Stieger, Argusville, N.D.; two brothers, Floyd, Valley City, N.D., and Marvin, Backus, Minn.; a sister, Loraine Liggit, Connecticut; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. Russ Pollock officiating.

Irene Geisler, 71, Jamestown, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Irene Viola Schrum was born Dec. 8, 1935, on the family farm south of Kulm, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Christina (Heil) Schrum. She attended the rural school and grew up on the family farm. They moved to Edgeley, N.D., in 1953. She married Herbert Geisler on Jan. 2, 1954, in Merricourt, N.D. They lived on a farm near Millarton, N.D. They moved to Jamestown in 1960. She worked at Jamestown Hospital and later at the North Dakota State Hospital, until 1970. She also provided foster care for disabled adults. He died July 10, 1996. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed leather tooling and going out for coffee.

She is survived by a son, Jim (Fran), Jamestown; three daughters, Donna (Wes) Wiberg and Connie Sabinash, both Jamestown, and Bonnie (Lee) Gessner, Penn, N.D.; two brothers, Reinhold (Ruth), Litchville, Minn., and Melvin (Pat), Fort Morgan, Colo.; three sisters, Violet (Otto) Untersher, Fargo, N.D., and Adeline Hartman and Carrie Bernhagen, both Edgeley; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, six brothers, Albert, Fred, Wilbert, Ivan, John and Jacob, and four sisters, Freida, Ellen, Rose and Pauline.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, First Congregational United Church of Christ, James-town, with the Rev. Susan Lester officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. today, Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Albert Geiszler, 92, Jamestown, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Geiszler was born June 26, 1917, on the family farm south of Gackle, N.D., the son of John and Christina (Klein) Geiszler. He grew up in the region, receiving his elementary education in rural schools. He helped on the family farm. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Oct. 28, 1941, where he worked as a medical assistant. He was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theaters. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 20, 1945, with the rank of corporal. He married Myrtle Otto on Feb. 23, 1947, at Gackle. He worked as a barber from 1941 until 1960. He bought the Deep Rock Station in 1952. They moved to Bandon, Ore., in 1967 where he worked for the Bandon Public School in maintenance. He retired in 1982. They moved to Jamestown in October 2009. He was a member of the Gold Coast Barber Shop Chorus for 15 years and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown. He enjoyed music and playing at USO dances.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Russell (Gwen), Jamestown; two daughters, Sandra (Richard) Dale, Jamestown, and Kim (Jon) Forrest, Pagosa Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Rueben (Liz), Whidbey Island, Wash., and Erwin (Eileen), Napoleon, N.D.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Harlan Kaden officiating.

Alvin Geist, 69, West Fargo, N.D., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Geist was born May 1, 1933, in Napoleon, N.D., the son of Henry and Pauline (Kirschenman) Geist. He attended school in Tappen and Pettibone, N.D. After his school years, he worked at the Sunshine Cattle Ranch. He later worked at a cattle ranch in Steele, N.D. In 1956 he moved with his parents to Fargo, where he worked for the city. He married Adeline Deutscher on June 9, 1957, in Gackle, N.D. They moved to Jamestown, where he worked for Lindberg Builders on the World's Largest Buffalo. He later moved back to Fargo and worked for Branicks Industrial for six years. He then worked for Robert Cooke in Woodworth, N.D. Two years later they moved to West Fargo, where he again worked at Branicks Industrial until retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Ann (Dave) Johnson, Fargo; three sons, Alan (Brenda), West Fargo, Arlyn, Shreveport, La., and Aaron (Belinda), Fargo; four sisters, Delores (Daryl) Stroh, Denver, Colo., Betty (Ralph) Schatz, Calif., Shirly (Ron) Phillips, Abilene, Texas, and Rose Nelson, Fargo; a brother, Kenneth (Linda), Moorhead, Minn.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merlyn and Donald; and a sister, Lorraine Nies.

The funeral for Gerhardt Geiszler, 88, Wishek, N.D., formerly Gackle, N.D., will be at 10:30 Saturday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with burial in Fredonia, N.D. Visitation will be from noon to 9 today, from 9 to 9 Friday, in Haut Funeral Home, Gackle, and one hour before services in the church. He died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1995.

Mr. Geiszler was born Jan. 27, 1906, near Fredonia, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. He married Emma Krueger June 23, 1932, in Fredonia. They farmed near Fredonia until 1971, when they retired and moved into Gackle. She died in 1994. Later he entered Wishek Retirement Home.

Mary Geiszler, 94, Fargo, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Mary Gumke was born June 10, 1907, near Gackle, N.D. where she grew up and attended school. On April 15, 1928, she married Simon Geiszler in Jud, N.D. They worked on farms near Fullerton, N.D., Jud and Kulm, N.D. until 1948 when they bought a farm near Jud. In 1966, they retired and moved into Gackle. He died in 1974. In 1997, she entered the Gackle Care Center and in 2000 she entered Rosewood On Broadway, Fargo.

She is survived by two daughters, Leona Schober, West Fargo, Loretta (William) Atwood-Ost, Payson, Ariz.; a brother, Ray Gumke, Gackle; a sister, Pauline Ost, Jamestown; nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Visitation: Saturday and Sunday from 9-9, with a prayer service Monday at 11, in Haut Funeral Home, Gackle.
Funeral: Monday at 2 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.

Milbert Jacob Geiszler, 50, lifelong resident of the Gackle, North Dakota Community died late Sunday night February 5, 1967 at the Staples Municipal Hospital in Staples, Minnesota, where he had been hospitalized following and automobile accident in which he was injured near Staples on Friday noon February 3, 1967. He was returning with friends from a vacation trip to the Eastern part of the United States.

He was born August 9, 1916 at the family farm home ten miles south of Gackle in Gutschmidt Township, Logan County, the son of August Geiszler and Dorothea Elhard Geiszler. He attended the local rural school and grew to manhood on the family farm where he worked with his parents. His crippled condition resulted from an early illness when he was two years old, becoming partially disabled in 1942. He farmed with his brother Wilhelm until March 1949 when he moved into Gackle where he lived with his aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. John Geiszler. He had served as assessor in Gutschmidt Township for many years, and was a McNess Products salesman at the time of his death. He was a member of the Governing Board and Manager-Bookkeeper of the Gackle Civic improvement Association Store in Gackle, and worked with the ASC Office as Community Committeeman for Logan County, which he held to the time of his death.

Surviving are two brothers and four sisters, Hulda (Mrs. John Ammon), Cleveland, N.D., Ardina (Mrs. Jon Teske), Lodi, Calif., Bernard Geiszler, Seattle, Wash., Alvina (Mrs. Alvina Ammon), Jamestown, N.D., Wilhelm Geiszler, Gackle, N.D., and Annetta (Mrs. Otto Rasch), Ashley, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother in 1939, his father in 1963, and on sister in infancy.

The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m Friday, February 10, 1967 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle with Rev. John F. Mertz, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Gackle Cemetery at Gackle. The body is at the Haut Funeral Home in Gackle until taken to the church at noon on Friday.

The funeral for Sophia Geiszler, 87, Fredonia, N.D., will be at 11 today in Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Fredonia. She died Saturday, Oct. 28, 1995. Sophia Serr was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Romania. She moved with her family in 1910 to the United States. They settled in Fredonia, where she grew up and attended school. On June 7, 1928, she married Richard E. Geiszler near Fredonia. They farmed near Fredonia and in 1946 they moved into Fredonia. They continued to farm until retiring in 1970. He died in 1977. She entered the Wishek Nursing Home in 1992 and in 1994 she moved to the Wishek Retirement Home. ...

Lydia Gensburg, 80, Napoleon, N.D., died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck, N.D.

Lydia Feigert was born Aug. 15, 1929, at Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Hottman) Feigert. She was raised in Streeter. She married Otto Gensburg on Oct. 29, 1952, at Jamestown. They lived in Streeter and later moved to Napoleon. She enjoyed making strudel, listening to music, word search puzzles and chewing gum.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Judy), Bismarck, and Michael (Marcy), Lincoln, N.D.; three daughters, Carol (Tom) Mullins, Yuma, Ariz., and Mary (Jerry) Engelhardt and Cindy (Tony J.) Doll, both Napoleon; a brother, Robert (Lil), Jamestown; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon.

Mrs. Wilhelmina (Jacob) Goehring, 89, pioneer and longtime resident of the Gackle Community died Tuesday afternoon, December 13, 1966 at the Wishek Hospital in Wishek, North Dakota, shortly after she was admitted.

Wilhelmina Netz was born on March 29^th, 1877, in New Elft, Bessarabia, South Russia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilhelm Netz, at the age of 16 years she came to the United States in 1893 and resided with her sister at Kulm, N.D. She and Jacob Geohring were married October 14, 1894 and they farmed for a time in McIntosh County, later moving to a farm two miles northeast of Gackle where they resided. In 1923 they moved into Gackle. Following the death of her husband in 1943, she continued to live in Gackle until the past few months when she made her home in the Wishek Retirement Home at Wishek, N.D.

Surviving are her children; Amelia (Mrs. Gust Suko) Brockway, Montana, Mrs. Magdalena Koenig, Harold Geohring, both of Jamestown N.D., Otto Goehring, Adam Geohring, both of Gackle, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-four great grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Goehring was held on Friday, December 16, 1966 at the Grace Baptist Church in Gackle with Rev. R. C. Stading, pastor, officiating. Mrs. R. C. Stading played a program of organ music as friends and relatives assembled and left the church.

"Under His Wings" and "Wunderwoll Und Schoen" were sung by Mrs. Helen Speidel and Mrs. Lloyd Janke with Mrs. R. C. Stading playing the accompaniment.

The pallbearers were Henry Kroll, Christ Trautman, Albert Muller, John W. Muller, Wm. Schlenker, and Jacob Schlecht.

Burial was in the Gackle cemetery at Gackle with Haut Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Out of state relatives attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gust Suko of Brockway, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Suko and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Suko of Hardin, Montana, and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Suko of Sidney, Montana.

Mrs. Jacob George, 67, longtime resident of the Gackle community died late Tuesday afternoon, May 16. 1967 at the Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown, North Dakota where she had been hospitalized for about five days.

Emelia Gohl was born February 17, 1900 in Odessa, South Russia, the daughter of Wm. Gohl and Margaret Hottman Gohl. At the age of seven years she came with her parents to the United States in 1907 when they settled on a farm near Ashley, North Dakota. She attended the local rural school and grew to womanhood on her parent's farm.

She and Jacob George were married December 30, 1919 at the rural Lutheran Church near Ashley, North Dakota. They began farming six miles south of Lehr in McIntosh County, where they lived until 1942 when they moved to a farm south of Windsor in Stutsman County. In 1947 they moved to a farm near Gackle and moved into Gackle in 1948. Mr. George was employed by the State of North Dakota in highway maintenance for many years, before retiring in Gackle.

Surviving are her husband, five children, Erna (Mrs. Arthur Buchholz), Martha (Mrs. George Trudeau Jr.), Jamestown, N.D.; Irene (Mrs. Lenhardt Rivinius), Mary (Mrs. Mary Pruess), Gackle, N.D.; Marvin George, Randolph, Mass. fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Erna (Mrs. Jacob Kaul), Lydia (Mrs. Jacob Kapp), Leola, S.D., two brothers, Wm. Gohl, Long Lake, S.D., Otto Gohl, Ashley, N.D.

The funeral service was held Saturday, May 20, 1967 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle with Rev. John F. Mertz, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Gackle Cemetery with Haut Funeral Home in Gackle in charge of the arrangements.

Emma George, 83, Jamestown, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown.

Emma Isabelle Stroh was born April 24, 1925, in Tappen, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Eva (Miller) Stroh. She grew up on a farm and attended country school near Tappen. She married Christ George on May 6, 1947, in Steele, N.D. They lived in Tappen and later moved to Jamestown. He died Sept. 3, 1981. She entered Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in 2004. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and listening to music.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Hoekstra, Fargo, N.D., and Connie (Donald) Harshman, Jamestown; three sons, Bob (Vicky), Duane (Diane) and Jerome (Lois), all Jamestown; two sisters-in-law, LaVern Stroh, Bismarck, N.D., and Lorraine Oster, Fargo; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a son in infancy, Gary; eight brothers, one in infancy, John, Edward, Fred, August, Jake, Adolph and Rudolph; and three sisters, Mary (Jake) Kemmet, Katie (Jake) Lang and Leona (August) George.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Leon Zavadil officiating.

Gottlieb George, 59, Tappen, formerly of Lehr, died Sunday in a Bismarck hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks.

Mr. George was born March 15, 1896, Lehr. Mr. George and Miss Mathilda Nitschke were married at Lehr and farmed in the vicinity until retiring in 1946, and moving to Tappen. In 1950 Mr. George took the position as school custodian at Tappen which he held at the time of his death. Mrs. George died and later Mr. George and Mrs. Elfrieda Rommich Hust were married.

Surviving are his widow and two sons and two daughters, August and Christ George, Tappen, Mrs. Gideon Mittleider (LaVerne), Watertown, SD, and Mrs. Edwin Oster (Lorraine), Steele, four stepchildren, Leroy, Verdella, Clifford and Martyn, Tappen, a brother, Jacob George, Gackle, and a sister Mrs. Al Meyer, St. Paul, and 32 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church, Tappen. Burial in the Tappen cemetery. The body was in the Haut Funeral Home in Gackle until taken to the church Wednesday morning.

Leona George, 78, Jamestown [ND], died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown.

Leona Stroh was born Oct. 15, 1922, in Tappen, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. She married August George Jan. 17, 1944, in Steele, N.D. They farmed near Tappen until 1983, when they retired and moved to Jamestown. He died in 1984.

She is survived by five daughters, Arlene Horst, Janice (Norman) Kidd, Karen George, all Jamestown, Jolene (Richard) Diegenstein, Fond du Lac, Wis., Betty (Bud) Job, Windsor, N.D.; a brother, Rudolph (Luverne), Bismarck, N.D.; a sister, Emma George, Jamestown; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Today from 9 to 9, with a prayer service at 7, in Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Oswald "Ossie" George, 87, Kulm, N.D., died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek, N.D.

Mr. George was born Nov. 13, 1918, at Lehr, N.D., the son of Fred and Katherine (Hausauer) George. He grew up and attended school in Lehr. He married Clara Keller on May 28, 1943, in Lehr. She died in 1982. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later served active duty during the Korean conflict. He worked for F.C. Smith, electrician after his discharge. He attended North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton, where he earned his electrician license and then started his own business in 1957. He farmed for many years with his brother Walter in Lehr. He married Evelyn Keller in April 1983 and they lived in Kulm. She died in January 2005. He was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club, Fireman’s, Rod and Gun Club and the town board.

He is survived by two daughters, Pat (Douglas) Kaiser, Buchanan, N.D., and Vicki (Tom) Pushcar, Prior Lake, Minn.; a son, Morris, Kulm; two stepdaughters, Darnella Zachrison, Kulm, and Linda (Dave) Nelson, Cannon Falls, Minn.; a sister, Tabetha Kranzler, Lehr; four grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; a great –grandchild and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Arthur John Gienger, 68, Jamestown, N.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in his home.

Mr. Gienger was born Feb. 10, 1930, near Streeter, N.D. He moved with his family near Jud, N.D., where he grew up, attended school and worked for area farmers. He served in the U.S. National Guard from 1948 to 1949. On Oct. 24, 1953, he married DeLewis Widmer near Kulm, N.D. They lived in Ellendale, N.D., where he worked for Ford Garage. He also worked for area farmers until 1973, when they moved to Jamestown. He worked for North Dakota State Hospital, Jamestown. He retired in 1992.

DeLewis "Lois" Gienger, 67, Jamestown, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

DeLewis Widmer was born April 18, 1933, at the family farm home in Whitestone Township, southeast of Kulm, N.D., the daughter of Rudolph and Frieda (Giesler) Widmer. She attended the local rural school north of Whitestone Battle Field, south of Kulm. She grew in the Kulm area, where she helped on the family farm. She married Arthur Gienger Oct. 24, 1953, southeast of Kulm. They lived in Ellendale, N.D., then in different small towns in central North Dakota. In 1976 they moved to Jamestown, where she worked at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center. He died Feb. 9, 1999. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Jamestown.

She is survived by two sons, Keith (Sandy), Hurdsfield, N.D., and Kevin (Dawn), Kalispell, Mont.; three daughters, Pauline (Darwin) Roeske, Jamestown, Lori (Bill) Rath, Cleveland, N.D., and Tina (Dan) Johnson, Tyndall, S.D.; six brothers, Ralph (Mary Lou), Ellendale, Floyd, Simi Valley, Calif., Dellanor (Sally), Kulm, Bobby (Mary), Pahrump, Nev., and Jerry (Titia), Peoria, Ariz., and Clyde (Carol), Wichita, Kan.; three sisters, Leona Ulmer, Fullerton, N.D., Grace (Vincent) Caldwell, Jamestown, and Jane (Nick) Lopez, Lakewood, Wash.; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild, two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Edwin Gienger, 89, Streeter, N.D., died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Mr. Gienger was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Streeter, the son of John and Christina (Schmidt) Gienger. He grew up and received his education in country schools. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Badlands near Medora, N.D., from 1934-35. He married Virginia Perman on June 2, 1939, in Streeter. They farmed six miles southwest of Streeter. She died May 23, 1991. He entered Gackle Care Center in June 2001. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, a former church board member, Streeter Co-op Oil Company board member and Blue Ball Township school board member. He enjoyed Minnesota Twins baseball games on television and radio.

He is survived by four sons, Donald (Lila), Streeter, Dennis, Lake Forest, Calif., Gerald (Ann), Denver, and Eugene (Rosanne), Wayne, Pa.; a daughter, Judith (John) Hoeglund, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; a sister, Magdalena Bitterman, Canandaigua, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, St. Luke Lutheran Church, Streeter, with the Rev. Annette Crickenberger officiating.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Haut Funeral Homes, Gackle, and one hour before the service at the church.

Erma Gienger, 80, Jamestown, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Erma Spitzer was born January 28, 1930, on the family farm northwest of Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Philip and Lydia (Graf) Spitzer. She attended a one-room country school and graduated from Streeter High School, Streeter. She was confirmed at the Hope United Church of Christ. She married Wilmer Gienger on June 6, 1948. They farmed in the Streeter area until 1953. They moved to a farm south of Cleveland, N.D., and lived there until 1957. They then purchased a farm west of Cleveland. They retired in 1976. They moved to Jamestown. She lived in West Fargo, N.D., and later moved to Roseadele, Jamestown. She worked as a ward clerk at the North Dakota State Hospital, Jamestown. She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown and participated in the Ladies Circle. She enjoyed crocheting with beads and tailoring suits and dresses.

She is survived by her husband, West Fargo; three daughters, Valeria Youle, West Fargo, Rosalie (Terry) Wibstad, Jamestown, and Cindy (Dean) Schlaht, Cleveland; three sons, Delbert (Judy), Glasgow, Mont., Tilmer (Sandy), Valley City, N.D., and Ross (Jolynn), Jamestown; three brothers, Richard (Marelina), and Delano (Diane), both Minneapolis, Minn., and Herbert, Streeter; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; and a grandchild.

Ludwig Gienger, 85, Valley City, N.D., died Thursday, June 17, 1999, in Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.

Mr. Gienger was born Dec. 6, 1913, in Funston, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. He farmed with his family near Funston, then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. On June 7, 1946, he married Mary Menges in Charleston, Ill. They lived in Buffalo, Minn., for three years before moving to Anamoose, N.D., where they farmed until 1960. They lived in Hurdsfield, Cathay and Bordulac, all North Dakota. In 1971 they moved to Litchville, N.D. He worked for the N.D. State Highway Department. In 1991 they moved to Valley City. She preceded him in death. ...

Glenn H. Gilmore, 83, of Jud, N.D., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at Villa Maria, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Gilmore was born March 31, 1927, at Edgeley, N.D., the son of George and Mathilda (Nitschke) Gilmore. He attended a rural school in Glen Township, near Edgeley. He grew up on the family farm, which he co-owned with his late brother, Ivan, with whom he farmed with as Gilmore Brothers. He was a life-long farmer. He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by a sister, Deloris Kingston, Cupertino, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Irene Gilmore, Jud.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roy and Ivan; and a sister, Viola Stickler.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jud United Methodist Church, Jud, with the Rev. Rodney Ulmer officiating.

Ivan G. Gilmore, 85, Jud, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Gilmore was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Jud, the son of George and Mathilda (Nitschke) Gilmore. He received his elementary education at Glen Township rural school and grew up in the area where he worked on the family farm. He entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., on Feb. 21, 1945, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was discharged on Dec. 9, 1946, at Fort Lewis, Wash., with the rank of T/4. He re-entered the Army at Jud, on Sept. 27, 1950, and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., during the Korean conflict. He was discharged on Sept. 14, 1951. He married Irene Bossart on Nov. 4, 1950, in Aberdeen, S.D. They moved to Junction City, Kan., while he was stationed at Fort Riley. They returned to North Dakota to farm northwest of Jud with his brother, Glenn, after his discharge. He retired in 2002. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Jud, and Mayer-Morlock Post 250 American Legion, Gackle, N.D., a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he served on the LaMoure County Selective Service Board for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Rod (Vicki), Mandan, N.D., and Ron (Candy), Fargo; a brother, Glenn, Jud; two sisters, Viola Stickler, Seattle, and Delores Kingston, Cupertino, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, LaRae Gilmore Hillius; and a brother, Roy.

Magdalena Glatt, 93, Napoleon, N.D., died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, N.D.

Magdalena Meier was born July 30, 1915, the daughter of John and Rose (Kuhn) Meier. She grew up and attended school in rural Napoleon. She married Franz W. Glatt on Oct. 24, 1934, in Napoleon. They lived on the Glatt family farm until 1971, when they retired and moved into Napoleon. She entered the Napoleon Care Center in February 2008. She was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, and Christian Mothers Alter Society of Napoleon. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and making quilts.

She is survived by a son, James (Cheri), Napoleon; six daughters, Viola (Paul) Becker, Napoleon, Delores Wentz, Fargo, N.D., Phyllis Glatt, Eagen, Minn., Marion Doll, Helen Regner, Irene Enzminger and Donna (Larry) Aberle, all West Fargo, N.D.; two sisters, Theresa Eissinger, Napoleon, and Ann Bauer, Grand Forks, N.D.; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and daughter-in-law, Myron and Yvonne; her parents, two brothers; two sisters; two sons-in-law, Gordon Wentz and Larry Enzminger; a grandson, Garit Wentz, and a great-granddaughter.

Arvel H. Glinz, 89, Jamestown, ND, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at his home in Jamestown with his family by his side.

Arvel Harley Glinz was born March 13, 1921, on the family farm in Bottineau County near Russell, ND, the son of James and Elizabeth (Zurcher) Glinz. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Russell, ND, graduating from Russell High School in 1940. After graduating, he farmed with his father and brothers until October 23, 1942, when he was inducted into the United States Army Air Force. On July 19, 1943, he was honorably discharged and returned home to continue farming. Arvel married Marjorie Goheen in Minot, ND on October 17, 1944. Arvel continued to farm in the Russell, ND area until 1960, when they purchased a farm in the Jamestown, ND area. In 1970, he began Glinz Real Estate which he operated for a number of years. He later sold the real estate business, but continued selling real estate before retiring in April of 2008 from Century 21 Heritage Real Estate. During his 39 years in real estate, Arvel was instrumental in developing the land south of the Stutsman County Fair Grounds, the Skyline area and the Gussner School District. He suffered from Parkinson’s disease for many years and was under the care of Jamestown Hospital Hospice.

Arvel was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Elks of Jamestown. He served for many years on the Board of Directors for the North Dakota Wheat Producers. He enjoyed traveling and was interested in politics.

Arvel was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose great-grandchildren made his life complete.

MAXBASS Lee George Glinz, 67, Maxbass, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in a Minot nursing home.

He was born Sept. 10, 1942, in Minot to Willmar and Ruth (Lebeck) Glinz. He was raised in Maxbass, graduated from Maxbass High School and attended the Bottineau School of Forestry. He served in the Army for two years.

Lee farmed in the Maxbass area and also worked for Amerada Hess in the Newburg area. He was once married to Cindy Smith Duben.

Lee was a member of English Lutheran Church, Maxbass, and the George T. Taylor American Legion Post No. 52, Mohall. His hobbies included hunting and woodworking, and he enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Barnum.

Family: daughter, Laura Glinz (special friend, Stacey Burkle), Minot; mother, Ruth Glinz, Maxbass; his dog, Barnum; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral: Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at 2 p.m. in English Lutheran Church, Maxbass.

BOTTINEAU Lyle Glinz, 91, Westhope, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, in a Westhope nursing home.

He was born Feb. 10, 1918, to James and Elizabeth Glinz in Russell. He entered the Air Force on April 7, 1942, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was discharged Jan. 25, 1946. He married Ione Mickelson on April 21, 1947, in Sidney, Mont.

Survivors: wife; daughters, Denise Gessner, Bottineau, Darla Grann, Westhope, Leann Glinz, Moorhead, Minn.; son, Donovan, Phoenix; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Arvel, Jamestown, Norman, Bottineau.

Service: There will be a private family service.
Burial: In the spring in Westhope Cemetery.

Amelia Gohner, 91, Jamestown, N.D., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, in Jamestown Hospital.

Amelia Suko was born Aug. 27, 1906, near Gackle, N.D. She grew up and attended school near Alfred, N.D. On Dec. 22, 1924, she married John Gohner in LaMoure, N.D. They farmed near Jud, N.D., until 1960, when they moved to Jamestown. She worked as a cook at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown. He died in 1960.

She is survived by three sons, Paul (Audrey), Montpelier, N.D., Joe (Phyllis), Alfred, James (Mavis), Jud; seven daughters, Irene Moldenhauer, Galt, Calif., Laverne (Gordon) Yetterboe, Gackle, Leah Moldenhauer, Jud, Delores (Lloyd) Schroeder, Sharon (Gordon) Schlenker, both Alfred, Marie (Charles) Strobel, ...

Mr. Gohner was born May 13, 1936, near Jud, N.D, the son of John and Amelia (Suko) Gohner. He grew up at rural Jud and attended rural school and Jud Public School. He married Phyllis Konrad on Dec. 8, 1957, at Jamestown. They lived on a farm near Gackle, N.D. In 1963 they moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he worked for the Cornhusker Tile and Marble Co. In 1968 they moved to Montpelier, N.D., where he started Gohner Tile and Marble. In 1982 they moved to Alfred, N.D. He retired in 1994. They moved to Fargo in 2006. He was a member of the Church of God Seventh Day, Alfred. He enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Kristy Lynn (Steve) Schmidt, Fargo, Karol Jo (Brad) Ciavarella, Mitchell, S.D., and Karen Kay Gohner, Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Paul (Audrey), Montpelier, and James (Mavis), Jud; four sisters, Laverne Yetterboe, Gackle, Judy (David) Mickelson, Jamestown, and Delores (Lloyd) Schroeder and Sharon (Gordon) Schlenker, both Alfred; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Samuel Harold Goldsmith, 7, Porter, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, in Houston of complications from epilepsy.

Samuel was born Aug. 23, 1999, the son of David and Monika Goldsmith, Porter. He enjoyed school, riding the school bus, his pets, running and being outdoors.

He is survived by his parents; his grandparents, Harold "Bud" and Elsie Goldsmith, Streeter, N.D., and Wayne and Tillie Lacey, Tulsa, Okla.; and a great-grandmother, Bernice Goldsmith, Carrington, N.D.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Samantha, and a great-grandfather, Harold Goldsmith Sr.

Marjorie "Margie" Golin, 80, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, formerly of Fredonia, N.D., died April 17, 2010, at her home.

Marjorie Krueger was born March 24, 1930, at Fredonia, the daughter of Arthur and Mollie (Kosanke) Krueger. She attended school at North Dakota School for the Deaf, Devils Lake, N.D. She moved to Chicago. She married Sam Golin. He died in 1980. She has lived in Victoria with her daughter for the past 17 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Gail Golin (David Steffy), Victoria; a sister, Betty Brosz, Jamestown; and two brothers, Lloyd, Ashley, N.D., and Charles, Bloomington, Minn.

Edward Gomke, 83, of Jamestown, ND, died Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Ave Maria Nursing Home, Jamestown. Edward Gomke was born January 8, 1924, at Gackle, ND, the son of John and Mary (Stickel) Gomke. He worked on his parents’ farm until 1952, when he married Amanda Mueller Trautman. They made their home in Jamestown. He worked for Midwest Machine Company, John Deere, and Melland's Implement from which he retired from in 1986. Edward worked part-time for Jamestown Country Club and the Stutsman County Fairgrounds after retirement. He was a life member of the Jamestown Eagles club.

Edward is survived by his wife, Amanda Gomke, Jamestown; one son, Douglas Gomke, Fargo, ND; four daughters, Brenda Norquist, Eagle, NE, Stephanie Gomke, Boca Raton, FL, Carol Wateland and Linda Wagenmann, both of Fargo, ND; four grandsons; five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Jack, and William; and one sister, Elsie Suko.

Evelyn Gomke, 82, Jamestown, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.

Evelyn Fern Schmuhl was born Dec. 7, 1926, on a farm northwest of Eldridge, N.D., the daughter of Edward and Ida (Vargason) Schmuhl. She received her elementary education in rural schools near Eldridge. She helped her parents on the farm. She married William Gomke on Dec. 2, 1955, in Jamestown. They lived in Jamestown. She enjoyed playing cards and other games, crocheting and quilting.

She is survived by a daughter, Marian (Jay) Van Eaton, Jamestown; a brother, Edwin (Mildred), Wisconsin; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters, Elaine, Edna and Esther.

Frances Gomke, 72, West Fargo, N.D., formerly of Jamestown, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Innovis Health Care, Fargo, N.D.

Frances N. Veil was born Oct. 30, 1935, southwest of Gackle, N.D., in Logan County, the daughter of Adam and Helen (Schopp) Veil. She received her elementary education in Gackle. In 1949, her family moved to Jamestown. She finished her education in Jamestown, graduating from Jamestown High School. She worked part-time at Jamestown Hospital. She married Jack Gomke on Jan. 29, 1954, in Jamestown. They made their home on the Gomke family farm and in November 1954 they moved to Jamestown where she continued to work at Jamestown Hospital. She worked at Western Gear from 1971 to 1980. He died Jan. 9, 1989. She did cleaning work and cab driving after his death. She moved to the Fargo, N.D., area in 1998 where she did volunteer work as a senior companion and with the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, Ladies Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Jamestown Area Singles and Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters, Marsha (Robert) Rochow, Minneapolis, Maureen (Ken) Wade, Jamestown, and Melinda (Greg) Wald, Fargo; a son, Gardell (Sandy), Cook, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Mary Gomke was held Oct 3 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle with Rev J. F. Mertz officiating. Mrs. R. R. Bender played a program of organ music and accompanied the quartet, Mrs. Eddie A Hehn, Mrs. Melvin Zenker, Herbert Muller and Edgar Geiszler.

LeRoy Clarence Grabau, 62, of Buena Park and formerly of Lodi, died Oct. 26 in his home. He was born Sept. 7, 1942, in Logan County, N.D., where he was raised and attended schools in the Arvada School district.

He moved with his parents to Lodi in 1955. He graduated from Lodi Union High School in 1960, and then married Elaine Beglau in 1961. He served in the Army from 1961-64, including time in Germany. In 1964, he moved to Fullerton where he was employed by Delco in Anaheim for 30 years until his retirement in 1995. He met Joann Stauffer at Delco and they were married in 1994 in Reno, Nev.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and enjoyed serving on the Board of Church Properties. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking, model cars and trains.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Grabau, of Buena Park; daughter, Shelley Scully, of Corona; son, Terry Chandler, of Arizona; brother, Melvin Grabau, of Stockton; sister, Delphaine Pyles, of Sacramento; mother, Martha, of Galt; four step-children; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Grabau.

A funeral was held Nov. 1 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Buena Park. Interment was held at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

Glen A. Grabowska, 62, Kulm, N.D., formerly Leola, S.D., died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at Ashley (N.D.) Nursing Home, under hospice care.

Mr. Grabowska was born March 9, 1944, at Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Clarence and Adeline (Morrison) Grabowska. He grew up on the family farm near Leola, S.D., attended rural schools and graduated from Leola High School in 1962. He entered the U.S. Navy on July 17, 1962. He was honorably discharged Oct. 6, 1964. He returned to the Leola-Long Lake area. He later moved to Chicago, where he worked for North Central Airlines, currently Northwest Airlines, being transferred to several locations in the Midwest. He married Ruth Ann Roda on April 27, 1968, at Scottville, Mich. They returned to Leola in 1980. He retired from the airline in 1995. He worked for Montana Dakota Utilities for five years and later for Kulm Public School, Kulm. He retired due to ill health. She died in November 2000. He married Lois Schlabsz on Aug. 28, 2004, at Kulm. They lived in Kulm.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; three sons, Troy (Renee) and John (Staci), both Leola, and Brian (Penny), Broomfield, Colo.; a daughter, Marci Grabowska, Plover, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Karen (Jeff) Hankel, West Fargo, N.D.; a stepson, Paul (Sonja) Schlabsz, West Fargo; his mother, Ipswich, S.D.; a brother, Keith (Alberta), Bismarck, N.D.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Leola, with the Rev. Chester Murtha officiating.

Agnes Graf, 83, Moorhead, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, N.D., and Dilworth, Minn., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at The Evergreens, Moorhead, Minn.

Agnes Hoffart was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Hazen, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Usselman) Hoffart. She grew up on a farm in Mercer County, North Dakota, and attended country school there. She worked as a housekeeper for area farmers. She moved to Bismarck and worked at the Patterson Hotel as a waitress. She married David Graf, of the Streeter, N.D., area, on Sept. 5, 1943, in Hazen. They lived in Bismarck for one year and then moved to Dilworth. She was employed by Americana Nursing Home, Moorhead, for several years as a kitchen aide. She retired in 1980. He died May 19, 1996. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Dilworth. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and flowers.

She is survived by a son, Gerald (Jill), The Dalles, Ore.; a daughter, Debra (Dareld) Hertz, Bismarck; a brother, Elias (Marilyn), Moorhead; a sister-in-law, Sally Wagner, Bismarck; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: held Monday, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Dilworth.

Alvin Edwin Graf, 94, Bismarck, N.D., formerly Jamestown, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, in Bismarck.

Mr. Graf was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Newberry Township, southwest of Medina, N.D., the son of Rudolph and Eva (Oberlander) Graf. He grew up in the Medina area and attended Newberry Township School #1. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for 27 months beginning in 1934. He then farmed with his parents and worked on construction jobs in the area. He married Alice L. Webber on Dec. 12, 1939, at Page, N.D. They moved to Medina, where they operated Graf Standard Station until 1942. They moved to Carrington, N.D., where he worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Railroad. In 1947, they moved to Fargo, N.D., where he worked as a bridge and building carpenter for Northern Pacific Railroad. They moved to Jamestown in 1949, where he worked as a carpenter until 1969. They returned to Fargo where he was a shop carpenter in Dilworth, Minn. He retired in 1976 and they moved to Medina. In 1994, they returned to Jamestown. She died in 2006. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Medina. He was a member of St. James Basilica, Elks, Eagles, Moose Lodge, Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Lodge, Bismarck AmVets and Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling, golf, volunteer work and travel.

He is survived by two brothers, James, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Norman, Bismarck; and two sisters, Lucille Shepard, Toledo, Ohio, and Margaret Sam, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Dennis; parents; five brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. James Basilica, Jamestown.

Christina Graf, 90, Bismarck, N.D., formerly Streeter, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at a Bismarck hospital.

Christina Kirschenmann was born April 11, 1913, at the family farm southwest of Streeter, the daughter of John and Magdalena (Graf) Kirschenmann. She received her elementary education at the local rural school and grew up in the area. She married Adam Graf on Sept. 28, 1934, at Fessenden, N.D. They lived on a farm nine miles southwest of Streeter. In 1956, they moved into Streeter. She worked at the Streeter Cafe and Streeter Public School. He died in 1983. In January 2002, she moved into Edgewood Vista, Bismarck. She was a member of Hope United Church of Christ, Streeter, and the Women’s Guild. She enjoyed cooking, quilting and gardening.

She is survived by a son, Erwin (Adrene), Bismarck; a daughter, Peggy Graf, Bismarck; two sisters, Lena Spitzer and Bertha (Philip) Dewald, both Streeter; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Harlan; five sisters and three brothers.

STREETER -- Esther M. Graf, 85, Streeter, died Oct. 6, 2003, at a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Lukes's Lutheran Church, Streeter, with the Rev. Bob Pestal officiating. Burial will be in Streeter City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church.

Esther was born Feb. 19, 1918, at Streeter, the daughter of Andrew and Sophia (Brunner) Perman. She was raised and educated in Streeter. On April 24, 1938, Esther married Theodore "Ted" Graf in Streeter. They made their home in the Streeter area.

Esther was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of American Lutheran Church Women.

On a royal typewriter, Esther would type the news from Streeter for the Jamestown Sun. She loved flowers and gardening, and from her floral garden she would supply the church with floral arrangements. She would give the kids pumpkins from her vegetable garden. Esther was known for her cooking and had a special recipe for caramel rolls that she loved to share with friends and neighbors.

Recently at the auction sale of the Graf's, people would purchase at least one item as a remembrance of Ted and Esther.

Esther is survived by three children, Marjorie Knudson, Bismarck, Stan (friend Marlene) Graf, Streeter, and Edie (Wade) Bachmeier, Mandan; three grandchildren, April Bergman, Kristi Knudson and Kim Knudson; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Ann Bearsheart, David Knudson and Angela Knudson; one sister and brother-in-law, Dolly and Adam J. Dockter, Bismarck; and one brother and sister-in-law, Wes and Linda Perman, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, who died June 13, 2003; her parents; two sisters, Velma Bell and Virginia Ginger; and one brother, Norman.

STREETER-Funeral services will be held here for John B. [G.] Graf, Streeter, who died here Thursday at his home.

Mr. Graf was born in South Russia Oct. 15, 1880 and came to this country with his parents when he was 13, settling south of Dawson. In 1901 he married Miss Margaret Oberlander and the couple homesteaded eight miles northwest of here. In 1916 they moved to a farm west of here. Mrs. Graf died in 1924 and in 1926 Mr. Graf married Mrs. Christina Schilling Oszner [Ochszner]. The couple retired in 1941 and moved here.

Surviving are his widow and the following children: Mrs. Gottlieb Schumacher (Emma), Hosmer, S.D.; Mrs. August Schumacher (Ottillia), Medina; Mrs. Adolph Graf (Margaret), Bismarck; Mrs. Fred Schumacher (Pauline), Mrs. Gilbert Martin (Carolina), Adam, Mrs. Ted Dewald (Rosella), Benjamin and Emil, Streeter; a brother, Jacob, Napoleon; a sister, Mrs. Magdalena Kirschenmann, Streeter; five half-brothers; Louis, Aberdeen, S.D.; Fred, Bismarck; Samuel, Kintyre; Edward, Napoleon; Reinhold in California; a half-sister, Mrs. Christ Kermitt, Dawson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, three children and a brother.

LeNora Graf, 78, Bismarck, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010, with a room full of loved ones. She is free from all pain after a very short and courageous battle with kidney cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Washington Street and Divide Avenue, Bismarck, with Pastor Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Interment will be at the ND Veteran’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 - 9:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service and will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

LeNora Klundt was born near Medina on November 30, 1931, to Herman and Christina (Heupel) Klundt. She was one of twelve children. She attended country school and worked on the family farm.

On November 25, 1951, LeNora married Norman Graf in Medina. In addition to being a stay at home mother and housewife, some of her occupations included nurse’s aide at Trinity Hospital in Jamestown and the office manager for Graf Oil Company.

LeNora served as a volunteer dispatcher for the Jamestown Police Department, the Stutsman County Sheriff, and Medina Emergency Services and Police Department for over 20 years. In the mid 1970s, LeNora was one of the first female trained volunteer ambulance squad members with the Medina Ambulance Service.

LeNora served on the church board and held the office of treasurer for many organizations including the English Lutheran Church. After moving to Bismarck in 1991, LeNora was very active with the English Singers and a volunteer for the Lung Association.

LeNora was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking and playing pinochle with her family and friends.

LeNora was a beautiful, kind, and generous woman whose unconditional love touched and groomed many. She will truly be missed by those who knew her. LeNora will be greeted in Heaven by her parents, Herman and Christina Klundt, her brothers, baby Gustav, Gus, Eddie, and Elvin, her sisters, Esther and Ruth, and her nephew, Steve Klundt.

She is survived by Norman Graf, her husband of 58 years of Bismarck; her children, Darrell (Kristi) Graf of Bismarck, Jodi (Randy) Jacobson of Bismarck, and Libby Penni Graf of Portland, OR; her grandchildren, Trevor Hanson of Seattle, WA, Tristie Hanson (Mike) Cook, Eva Graf, Kayla Jacobson, and Cara Jacobson, all of Bismarck; her brothers, Walter (Mary) Klundt of Jamestown, and Norman (Pat) Klundt of Battle Creek, MI; and sisters, Virginia (LeRoy) Struxness of Woodworth, ND, and Arlene Rohrback of Bismarck.

Loriena Graf, 81 of Fargo, died peacefully Friday, March 12, 2010 at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and in the company of friends.

Loreina was born May 12, 1928 in rural Streeter, ND. She was Peter and Bertha (Dammel) Graf’s only child. She graduated Salutatorian from Medina High School in 1946 and in 1947 from Central Dakota Commercial College. She worked in Jamestown until moving to Fargo around 1958 to work as an accountant for US West Communications eventually transferring to Omaha, NE. She retired in 1990.

Loriena was always invested in her community and church, most recently Elim Lutheran in Fargo. She had a heart for helping those in need, actively serving in such organizations as New Life Center, Churches United for the Homeless and Habitat for Humanity.

She is survived by her aunt Arlene Dammel of Ocala, FL, uncle Reuben (Ann) Graf of Medina, many cousins and her "adoptive family" Marion (Late Bruce) Miller, Becky (Russ) Tweiten, Deb (Ron) Stevens, Joe and John Miller and Michelle (Ken) Enockson.

Visitation: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Louise Graf, 92, Steele, N.D., died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Medcenter One Golden Manor, Steele.

Louise Schultes was born March 3, 1911, in Artas, S.D., the daughter of Sam and Rosina (Hepperle) Schultes. The family moved to Streeter, N.D., where she grew up and received her elementary education at the local rural school. She married Benjamin Graf on Dec. 17, 1936, in Jamestown. They lived in Milton Freewater, Ore., until 1938, when they moved back to North Dakota where they began farming 11 miles north of Lehr. In 1939 they moved to a farm west of Streeter. In 1950 they moved into Streeter where she was a housewife. He died July 26, 1971. She continued to live in Streeter until 1973, when she moved to Steele. In 1998 she became a resident at Golden Manor, Steele. She was a member of Hope United Church of Christ, Streeter, and later become a member of Steele Presbyterian Church, Steele.

She is survived by a daughter, Delores Martel, Lodi, Calif.; a son, Lee Roy (Daphne), Grand Forks, N.D.; a son-in-law, Frank (Connie) Barnick, Steele; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Burnett and an infant, Alvin; a daughter, Luella Barnick; a son-in-law, Art Martel; seven brothers; five sisters; and three grandsons, Bruce and Bryon Martel and Russel Graf.

Theodore "Ted" Graf, 90, Jamestown, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Mr. Graf was born Jan. 12, 1913, at Streeter, N.D., the son of John Sr. and Katherine (Buck) Graf. He attended school in Streeter and graduated from Streeter High School in 1933. He received a college degree from Ellendale Normal and Industrial School. He returned to Streeter, where he taught school. He married Esther Perman on April 24, 1938, at Streeter. They lived in the Streeter area, where he worked varied careers as a teacher, postmaster, farmer and insurance businessman with North West GF Mutual. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Streeter. He served as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher and a member of the choir.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Marjorie Knudson, Bismarck, N.D., and Edie (Wade) Bachmeier, Mandan, N.D.; a son, Stan, Pearce, Ariz.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William G. ‘Bill’ Graf, 71, Streeter, North Dakota died Monday October 18, 2004 at the St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Bill was born January 1, 1932 the son of John Graf and Selma (Rittershaus) Graf. He attended the Streeter Public School and graduated from the Streeter High School in 1951.

He and Esther Remmich were married April 12, 1953 at Streeter, ND. They farmed near Streeter until 1961. Since that time they have owned and operated Wm. Graf Truckline.

Bill was a member of the Hope United Church of Christ in Streeter, ND, and was very active in community affairs. He served as the president of the Streeter City Cemetery Board and was instrumental in establishing the Cemetery Trust Fund. He enjoyed restoring and showing antique cars and was a member of the Wishek Antique Car Club. He was also a member of the Bismarck Elks Lodge.

Bill was very fond of his family, especially his grandson Joe. He always enjoyed giving him rides on all his vehicles, watching him drive the go-cart and helping Joe shine up his new car. He also enjoyed the many hours spent with his grand-nephew, Cody. The time spent visiting with Neighbors, friends and extended family were an important part of his life. He was often seen driving his Jeep around town in the summer. His generosity, kindness and sense of humor always showed. During his illness he was always positive and upbeat, making it pleasant for his family and those around him.

Bill will be greatly missed and certainly live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, Esther, Streeter, ND, one daughter and son-in-law, Claudine and Craig Anderson, Lakeville, MN, one grandchild, Joseph Anderson, and one son-in-law, Lawrence Bender, Bismarck, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Geraldine in 1999 and Claudette Ann in infancy.

The funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday October 23, 2004 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Streeter, ND. Pastor Barbara Murray, Reverend James Moos and Reverend Cody Schuler will be officiating.

Interment will be made in the Streeter City Cemetery, Streeter, ND.

Dorothy L. (Laemmle) Graner, 74, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Milwaukee, WI.

Alvin Grenz, 84, Gackle, North Dakota, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown, ND.

Alvin was born November 23, 1924 in Germania township, near Gackle, ND. He grew up and attended school in the Gackle area. Alvin farmed with his father and uncle for several years and also worked for the Hide and Fur Co. in Bismarck, ND. On December 1, 1946, Alvin married Magdalena Kirvida at Grace Baptist Church in Gackle. They lived on the family farm for a few years. They rented a farm until 1963, when they purchased and built their own farm in Germania township. Alvin was baptized on May 30, 1971 at Grace Baptist Church, Gackle. Alvin enjoyed farming, field work and his Angus cattle. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Gackle.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Magdalena, Gackle; one brother, Marvin (Leah) Grenz, Gackle; one sister, Geraldine (Walter) Sells, Seashore, OR; brother-in-law, Marvin Tarnasky, Bismarck, ND; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Amelia Grenz, 85, Napoleon, N.D., died Friday, April 12, 2002, at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, N.D.

Amelia Grenz was born June 16, 1916, near Napoleon in Logan County, North Dakota, the daughter of Philip and Magdalena (Stadel) Grenz. In 1918 the family moved to Kidder County, North Dakota, near Dawson, N.D., where Amelia grew up and attended Liberty School. In 1947 she moved to Steele, N.D., where she worked at various jobs in the area. In 1975 she moved to the Napoleon Care Center, where she lived until her death. Amelia enjoyed quilting, crafts and summer camps at Camp Grassick.

She is survived by two sisters, Lula Hoff and Alice Giest, both Steele.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Arrangements by Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.
Visitation: one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Barbara Grenz, 76, former resident of Streeter died at a Bismarck hospital on January 6, 1960, after being a patient there for two days.

Funeral services were held on January 9, 1960, in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Streeter. Rev. John Schmierer, pastor officiated; burial was in the Lutheran cemetery in Streeter with Haut Funeral Home of Gackle in charge. Pallbearers were Jacob Bier, Richard Dockter, David Janke, Elmer Molske, Adolph Gutmiller and William Oberlander.

Barbara Bier, a daughter of Martin and Katie Gums Bier, was born on August 18, 1883, in Gildendorf, South Russia. She attended school and grew to womanhood in her native land. In 1904 she and Gottfried Grenz were married at Gildendorf, South Russia and they came to the United States in 1908. They settled and farmed a homestead west of Hazelton, North Dakota. In 1921 they moved into Hazelton. In 1951 they moved to Bismarck but returned to Hazelton two years later. In 1954 they moved to Streeter. In 1955 Mr. Grenz died and in May of that year she entered the Baptist Home for the Aged at Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and her husband.

Berthol "Shorty" Grenz, 83, of Lockeford, died May 31 in a local hospital following a short illness. He was born on Dec. 7, 1916, in Gackle, N.D., and moved to Lockeford in 1946.

Mrs. Fred (Christina) Grenz, 92, died Saturday at the Baptist Home in Bismarck, where she had resided since April 7, 1964.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Napoleon Baptist Church, and burial will be made in Napoleon City Cemetery. The Rev. Otto Fiesel will Officiate, and pallbearers will be Marvin, Daryl, Arlo and Kermit Grenz and Walter and Weston Schauer.

Mrs. Grenz was born in Odessa, Russia, Dec. 3, 1880, a daughter of Jacob and Rosina Schnaidt.

She was married to Fred Grenz at Napoleon Oct. 13, 1903 and the couple farmed in that vicinity until retiring into Napoleon in 1945. Mr. Grenz died on Jan. 28, 1968. Mrs. Grenz was a member of Napoleon Baptist Church.

She leaves six sons, Edwin, John, and Roland, all of Bismarck; Jacob, Napoleon; Adam, Portland, Ore., and Ernest, Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Lydia Schauer, Napoleon; a brother, Carl Schnaidt, Sacramento; two sisters, Mrs Ricka Frey and Mrs. Mary Wentz, both of Napoleon; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothy Grenz, 84, Jamestown, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Dorothy Suko was born June 30, 1922, in Alexander Township, north of Alfred, N.D., the daughter of Reinhold and Christina (Obenauer) Suko. She was baptized and confirmed. She attended rural school and worked on the family farm. She married Gust Grenz on Nov. 5, 1943, at her parents’ farm home north of Alfred. They lived on a farm by Cleveland, N.D., for seven months and they moved to a farm southwest of Medina, N.D. They moved to Jamestown in 1967. She worked at the Anne Carlsen Center for Children, Jamestown, for six months; North Dakota State Hospital, Jamestown, for two years in food service; and 12 years in housekeeping until she retired in 1982. He died Aug. 30, 1982. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the North Dakota State Employee Association.

She is survived by a son, Donald (Sylvia), Jamestown; a daughter, Deborah Grenz, Jamestown; two brothers, Martin (Helen) and Edwin (Loretta), both Jamestown; a sister, Ruth Gomke, Cleveland; a sister-in-law, Leona Suko, Napoleon, N.D.; two grandsons; two step granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Gotthilf and Sam; and seven sisters, Amelia Gohner, Bertha Wegner, Louise Attebery, Minnie Hoff, Rose Reich and infant twin sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with the Rev. Al Bitz officiating.

KARLSRUHE -- Ernest Grenz, 86, Karlsruhe, died April 29, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Clinton E. Grenz, retired Army chaplain officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Bismarck VFW Gilbert N. Nelson Post 1326. Ernest was born to Fred and Christina (Schnaidt) Grenz Sr., on May 11, 1913, on the family farm near Napoleon. Ernest served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines and remained on active duty for six years and four months. His military awards included Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, with one bronze star, and Philippine Liberation Medal with one star. After his time in the Army, Ernest served as a prison guard at the Folsom Federal Prison, Folsom, Calif. He later worked at the Sacramento Army Depot, Sacramento, Calif., where he retired with a medical disability. Ernest enjoyed traveling and visiting his many nieces and nephews, and friends. In 1935, Ernest married Emma Rudolph of Napoleon. Together they raised one son. Ernest was a former member of the Napoleon Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. On May 4, 1991, he married Helen Klein.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two brothers, Roland and John, both of Bismarck; one granddaughter, Athena Maria Grenz O'Brien; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

The funeral for Eugene G. Grenz, 79, Lehr, N.D., will be at 11 Friday in United Methodist Church, Lehr. Visitation will be from 9 to 9 today and Thursday in Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, N.D., and one hour before services in the church. He died Monday, Dec. 5, 1994.

Mr. Grenz was born March 27, 1915, near Artas, S.D. In 1925 he moved with his family to Napoleon, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended Merchandising and Business School in St. Louis. He also attended Bismarck (N.D.) Business College. He moved to Ashley, N.D., where he managed the local Wentz and Grenz store. He married Evelyn D. Timm Aug. 7, 1938, in Napoleon. They lived in Lehr, where they owned and operated Grenz General Store for 46 years. He served as District 30 Republican chairman and was also chief bill room clerk of the North Dakota Legislature for several sessions. He served on the Lehr City Council for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Rodney G. (Kay), Woodbury, Minn.; a daughter, Sharon A. (Alvin) Roelser, Lehr; three brothers, Albert G. (Marie), St. Paul, John G. "Custar" (Irene), Napoleon, Willie G. (Lorene), McClusky, N.D.; three sisters Ida (Harley) Kiesz, Lodi, Calif., Christine (Dalbert) Hoen, Tacoma, Wash., Elsie (Erv) Meyer, Mesa, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Fred Grenz, 85, an early settler of this county, died Sunday at the Bismarck Hospital where he had been a patient for 11 days.

Funeral services will be conducted at Napoleon Thursday at 1:30 from the Napoleon Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Harfst, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Napoleon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marvin, David and Daryl Grenz, Leonard Zako, Weston Schauer, Walter Schauer Jr. The body will be brought to Napoleon today (Wednesday) to Nickisch Funeral Home.

Fred Grenz was born December 2, 1882, in South Russia. He came to the United States with his parents to the Eureka, S. D., community.

He was married to Christina Schnaidt October 13, 1903. They settled on a homestead in Logan County where they farmed until retiring and moving into Napoleon in 1945. They moved to Bismarck in 1964 where they made their home in the Baptist Home.

Mr. Grenz was long active in the Republican party and was once a candidate for representative.

His wife, who is 87, survives. There are also six sons, Edwin, John and Roland of Bismarck, Jacob of Napoleon, Adam of Portland, Ore., Ernest of Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Schauer of Napoleon; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Violet Grenz of Bismarck and Mrs. Gloria Grenz of Missoula, Mont.; 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

The family prefers memorials be sent to the Napoleon Baptist Church building fund.

Gerald 'Jerry' James Grenz, 50, Gackle N.D., died from a farm accident Sunday Aug 9, 1998, in Stutsman County.

Mr. Grenz was born Feb. 23, 1948, at Jamestown the son of Alvin and Magdalena (Kirvida) Grenz. He attended Gackle Public School, Gackle, graduating in 1966. He attended Minot (ND) State University, graduating in 1971. He worked for MDU, Jamestown, for many years. He married Myra Kay Suko July 31, 1976, in Gackle. He worked for various construction companies in Fargo, and Wahpeton, N.D., including Klug & Smith in the 1970s and 1980s. He helped slop up elevators in Spirtwood, N.D. and Wahpeton. He farmed all his life. He was baptized in Grace Baptist Church. He attended Ebenzer United Methodist Church, Streeter, N.D., where he was an usher. He enjoyed reading the Bible, woodworking, fishing, traveling, riding ATVs, his dogs and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Hannah Faith Grenz, Edwards, Air Force Base, Calif., and Miriam Joy Grenz, Rapid City, S.D.; a son Zechariah Job, Gackle; and parents, Gackle.

SERVICES: 11 am. Thursday, Ebenzer United Methodist Church, Street, with the Revs. Grant Piehl and Harvey A. Motis officiating.

A farm accident has killed a man who authorities say apparently got caught in a hay baler.

Gerald Grenz, 50, of Gackle, went out to bale hay Sunday morning 11 miles northeast of Gackle, in south-central North Dakota. A relative went to check on Grenz later in the morning, and his body was found in the baler, said Jerry Mayer, investigator for the Stutsman County Sheriff's Department.

Funeral services for Gideon Grenz Missoula, Mont., were held here Monday at Napoleon Baptist Church. Rev. R. Thomas Harfat officiated, with interment at the Napoleon City Cemetery. The Nickisch Funeral Home, Napoleon, was in charge of arrangements.

Gideon Grenz was born Jan. 31, 1920, at Napoleon. He was married to Gloria Bauer in 1945 and the couple was engaged in farming here until 1955 when he worked for Treasure State Industries. He died in a Missoula hospital on Thursday. [Jul. 14, 1966]

Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Schmautz, Missoula, and Marjorie, at home; two sons, Dean and Merle, both at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grenz, Bismarck; six brothers, Edwin, John, and Roland, Bismarck; Ernest, Sacramento, Calif.; Adam, Portland, Ore.; Jake and Mrs. Lydia Schauer, Napoleon.

Pallbearers were Carl Wentz, Edwin Siewert, Clarence Graf, Gideon Oldenburger, Rubin Zimmerman, Edwin Pfeifle.

Gottfried Grenz died at his home in Streeter Monday, March 13, at the age of 77 years and 11 months. Born in Russia March 17, 1855 [? Hard to read], he came to America in 1893, settling at Venturia, N.D. In 1880 he married Katherine Heberle, who came to this country with him. They came to Bloomenfeld district, nine miles east of Streeter, in 1903. Later they moved to Streeter, where Mrs. Grenz died in 1930. In 1931 Mr. Grenz married Catherina Zimmerman, Lehr, who survives him. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Conrad Rivinius and Mrs. John Donat; three sons Ferdinand, John and Ausof; 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Six children preceded their father in death. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Gottlieb Lang [my great grandmother Regina], Jamestown, and Mrs. Fred Haas [Katharina], Gackle and a brother Christoff, Medina.

Services were conducted Wednesday by Rev. Klein in the Streeter Evangelical church. Musical selections were sung by Carl, Jacob and William Moser, Olga Shuck and Pauline Seher. Pallbearers were Conrad Rivinius, Ferdinand Grenz, John Grenz, Ausof Grenz, John Donat and Walter Enzminger.

Out-of-town people who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. John Lang, and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lang, Anamoose; Mrs. Bauer, Mrs. Borth and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Herman, Harried, S.D.

Mr. Grenz was born Sept. 10, 1881, in Gueldendorf, South Russia. Mr. Grenz and Miss Barbara Bier were married in Gueldendorf in 1904. They came to the the United States and filed on a homestead west of Hazelton in 1908. They lived on the homestead until 1921 when they moved into Hazelton and in 1951 went to Bismarck, remaining there two years when they returned to Hazelton, coming to Streeter in 1954.

Surviving are his widow, two brothers, Karl, Hazelton, and Gottlieb, Missoula, Mont. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday at the Streeter Lutheran Church. Rev. Theo. Judt is in charge. Burial in the Lutheran cemetery.

The body is at Haut Funeral Home in Gackle until taken to the church Friday at noon.

He leaves three sons and two daughters, Karl and Mrs. Fred Hoffman, both of Fredonia; Theodore, Mobridge, S. D.; Henry, Grafton; Mrs. Karl Wolf, Sioux Falls, S. D.; two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Christ Elhart, Medicine Hat, Alberta; Fred and Mrs. Mike Schmierer, both Ellendale; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. (Nickisch Funeral Home, Wishek)

     Gottlieb G. Grenz, 72, retired merchant died suddenly, Friday May 29 at his home in Napoleon. He suffered from a heart ailment for several months.
     He was born, April 19, 1892 at Artas, S.D., the son Gottlieb and Christine (Kost) Grenz. He attended school near the Grenz farm.
     He was married March 10, 1914 to Christine Wentz of Napoleon at Artas, S.D.. Mr. Grenz had farmed and operated a bulk gasoline station at Artas.
     Mr. and Mrs. Grenz came to Napoleon from Artas in 1925 and had since resided here.
     In 1926 Mr. Grenz and a brother-in-law, P. J. Wentz formed a partnership and operated the Wentz and Grenz general store. Mr. Grenz retired as an active partner in 1944, and the firm was dissolved in 1949. He had retained ownership of the Super Value grocery building. For 23 years Mr. Grenz was a stockholder in the Napoleon Oil Co.
     He had served as village treasurer and as a member of the fire department.
     In his 18 years of retirement, Mr. Grenz became interested in fishing and frequently took charge of stores operated by his sons Willie and Eugene during their vacations or business trips.
     Funeral services were held Monday from the Napoleon EUB Church, of which he was a member. Rev. W. E. Janerzki of Wishek was assisted by Rev. James Pomeroy.
     Rev. C. F. Strutz of Bismarck, an old friend of the family, read the obituary and also spoke of his association with Mr. Grenz during the past 30 years. Mr. Grenz had served as S. S. superintendent and as an officer of the local EUB Church. Musical numbers included a vocal quartet, Rev. Pomeroy, Emil Zimmerman, Erwin Siewert and Melbert Kemmet, a vocal solo by Richard Klein, and a duet by Mr. and Mrs Wallace Kusler of Artas.
     Organist were LeVon Siewert, Mrs. Clarence Graf and Mrs. George Grenz of Artas.
     Napoleon business places were closed during the funeral.
     Interment was in Napoleon Cemetery. Arrangements were by Nickisch Funeral Home.
     Pallbearers were Harley Grenz and Rodney Wentz of Napoleon, Terry Grenz of McClusky, Rodney Grenz of Lehr, Kenneth Grenz of Artas and Gerald Grenz of Breckenridge.
      Surviving are his wife and seven children, Mrs. Harley (Ida) Kiesz of Lodi, Calif., Christine of Seattle, Elsie of Sasesbo, Japan, now home on furlough, Eugene of Lehr, Albert at Breckenridge, John of Napoleon and Willie of McClusky. There are 17 grandchildren.
     Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Henry Muchs of Baker, Mont., and three brothers, Bert of Ellendale, Emil of Eureka, Christian of Artas.
     All the children, the sister and the brothers of Mr. Grenz were here for the services. Mrs. Eugene Grenz was absent as she was hospitalized at Rochester. Among relatives from a distance was Mrs. Martha (Adam) Grenz of Zellah, Wash. Relatives and friends were here in large numbers from Eureka, Artas, McClusky, and from Wishek, Lehr, Gackle and other area towns.

Harry Grenz, 82, Hazelton, died Feb. 12, 2008 at the Napoleon Care Center. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 16 at United Methodist Church, Linton. Burial will be in Sand Creek Cemetery, rural Linton, with military rites provided by Hazelton American Legion.

Harry was born Dec. 28, 1925 on a farm near Hazelton, the son of Jacob and Lydia (Serr) Grenz. He attended country school as well as grade school in Washburn, where the family lived from 1937 to 1948.

Harry married Edna Humann Oct. 15, 1950. In the mid 1950s they were able to purchase their own farmstead north of Hazelton, where they lived until 2003 when they moved into Hazelton.

Henry Grenz, 49, died suddenly January 3 at Grafton where he had been a resident at the Grafton State School since July19, 1965.

Henry was the son of Gottlieb and Magdalena (Goehring) Grenz of Fredonia. He was born May 15, 1916, in McIntosh County and lived with his parents in Fredonia until he entered Grafton State School.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Karl Wolf, Sioux Falls, S. D.; Mrs. Fred Hoffman and Karl Grenz, Fredonia; Theodore Grenz of Mobridge, S. D.

Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at 2:00 p.m. from the Berlin Baptist Church, rural Fredonia, with Rev. David Littke of Fredonia officiating. Burial was at the Berlin Baptist Cemetery with Nickisch Funeral Home, Wishek in charge.

Ida Nicklaus was born May 20, 1910, near Glen Ullin, N.D., where she grew up, attended school and farmed. She married Emanuel Straub in Glen Ullin in 1928. After a year and a half of marriage he died. She then moved with her family to Hebron, N.D.

She married J.E. Grenz Sept. 22, 1936 in Hebron, where they lived until 1941, when he moved his practice to Kulm. He died in 1980. She is survived by a son, Lester (Faye), Arvada, Colo.; two sisters, Emelia ...

Irene M. Grenz, 83, Bismarck, died Jan. 24, 2005, at a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irene was born March 30, 1921, to John and Katherine [Raile] Rau. She was raised and educated in Napoleon. She worked on the farm at home until Dec. 10, 1944, when she married Roland Grenz. They moved to Bismarck in 1955. She worked with her sister, Laura Becker, for Interior Designs, doing painting and staining work for 18 years. She retired after her daughter, Brenda, was born and she became a full-time homemaker. After raising her daughter, she provided daycare for her two grandkids from 1992 until 2004.

Most important to Irene were her family and her church. She was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church. She always enjoyed preparing a lunch to share with family and friends who stopped by. She enjoyed reading, walking, shopping, cooking and working. Her favorite times of all were when she was taking care of her grandkids. She is dearly remembered as a woman who always put the needs of her family ahead of hers.

Irene is survived by her husband, Roland Grenz, Bismarck; one daughter, Brenda Grewatz, and her fiance, Bryan Njos, both of Bismarck; two grandchildren, Kayla and Austin Grewatz, Bismarck; one brother, Walter Rau, Napoleon; three sisters, Helen Wentz and Alvina Kemmet, both of Napoleon, and Laura Becker, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ervin, Milton and Eugene; and two sisters, Alice Rau and Agnes Retzlaff.

The funeral for Jacob Grenz, 84, Napoleon, N.D., will be at 2 Friday in United Methodist Church, Napoleon. Visitation will be ongoing at Nickisch Funeral Home, Napoleon, and one hour before services in the church. He died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1992.

Mr. Grenz was born Dec. 30, 1907, near Napoleon. He grew up and attended school in the Burnstad, N.D., and Napoleon area. He married Lucy Freier March 13, 1930, near Streeter, N.D. They lived on various farms in the Napoleon area before settling on a farm near Napoleon. They retired in 1954 into Napoleon. He later resumed farming and became a resident in March of Napoleon Care Center.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Marvin, Napoleon; three brothers, Ernest, Mesa, Ariz., and John and Roland, both Bismarck, N.D.; a sister, Lydia Schauer, Bismarck; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

NAPOLEON -- John G. "Custer" Grenz, 83, Napoleon, died Aug. 3, 2000, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Salem United Methodist Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Ronn Wilke officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Custer was born May 29, 1917, on the family farm in Campbell County, near Artas, S.D., the son of Gottlieb and Christina (Wentz) Grenz. Custer was 9 years old when the family moved to Napoleon, where he grew up. Custer attended and graduated from Napoleon High School and went on to attend Valley City State Teachers College, graduating in 1941. Custer married Irene Wittmier on July 26, 1942, at Napoleon. They purchased and moved to a homestead farm in the Streeter Flat area in 1943. In 1954, they moved to Napoleon, where they operated a restaurant, Irene's Cafe, and he became known as a "sidewalk" farmer. Custer continued to farm until he retired at the age of 65. Since 1978 they have made their winter home in Mesa, Ariz. Custer was active in city affairs serving on the Napoleon City Council for several years. He was selected as a Napoleon High School Alumni of the Year recipient in 1996. He wrote articles for the Napoleon Homestead under the byline "Findings By John G. 'Custer' Grenz." He was an avid antique collector over the years attending most auctions in the tri-state area. He had a special interest in threshing machines and his collection graced the hills three miles east of Napoleon for many years, and they were featured in the March 1987 issue of National Geographic Magazine and Dakota Day Trips. Custer still owned the first tractor that he purchased, which was a 1943 model John Deere "B." He was an avid sports athlete and fan, having participated in both basketball and track. He was proud of the fact that his son and grandson also played basketball for Napoleon High School.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Grenz, Napoleon; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Harley and Gloria Grenz, Napoleon, and Steve Grenz, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and James Strand, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Mike Grenz, Candice Nelson, Cindy Steiner, Kelly Grenz, Ashley Grenz, Kayla Grenz, Ryan Strand, Krista Strand and Jessica McLella; three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Cody and Christylynne Grenz; one brother and sister-in-law, Willie and Lorene Grenz, Mesa; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Grenz, Lehr, and Marie Grenz, St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Harley Kiesz, Lodi, Calif., and Erv Meyer, Denver.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gene Grenz, in 1962; his parents; two brothers, Eugene and Albert; and three sisters, Ida Kiesz, Christine Hoen and Elsie Meyer.

The funeral for Karl Grenz, 82, Kulm, N.D., will be at 10:30 Wednesday in Berlin (N.D.) Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 9 today in Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm, and one hour before the services in the church. He died Saturday, July 16, 1994.

Mr. Grenz was born Feb. 28, 1912, near Fredonia, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. He married Eda Kusler Nov. 14, 1933, in Ashley, N.D. They farmed near Fredonia for four years, then moved to Omak, Wash., where they lived for 2 1/2 years. They then returned to the Fredonia area and farmed until retiring. They moved to Kulm in 1981.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Roger (Ardella), Spokane, Wash., and Eugene (Ruby), Jamestown, N.D.; a daughter, Joyce (LeRoy) Kramlich, Kulm; two sisters, Pauline Wolf, Sioux, S.D., and Bertha Hoffman, Kulm; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

On September 4th, the body a long resident of Streeter was laid to rest. Mrs. Katherina Grenz, nee Heberle was born in southern Russia on the 7th of December 1857. Then coming to this country with her husband. Mrs. Grenz and family lived for a while near Venturia, coming into this neighborhood of Streeter, she lived on a farm in the Bloomenfield district for 13 years, then moving to the village where she was a resident until the end of her life. On September 2nd she closed her earthly career at 73 years, 3 months and 7 days.

The deceased had been ailing from diabetes for about 5 years and in the last years was stricken with blindness, yet she remained resolved to her lot and complained very little. A few days before her death, heart trouble set in, from which she passed away. A few minutes before her death, friends were by her bedside and talked with, while she yet was sitting up. A few minutes after company had left, she quietly passed beyond.

Pall-bearers were; Conrad Rivinius, John Grenz, Asof Grenz, John Donnat, Ferdinand Grenz and Adam Herman.

Those who survive her are: Her husband, Mr. Gottfried Grenz, 5 children; Ferdinand, John, Asof, Mrs. Conrad Rivinius and Mrs. John Donnat, all are in and around Streeter. Also 4 sisters and two brothers, all of whom are still in Russia, except one sister, Mrs. Hanna Lang of Anomoose, N. D., who attended the funeral. 14 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild besides a host of friends and relatives who will miss her.

The ladies aid sang a nice song to show their love and kindness as the deceased was a member of the ladies aid for years.

Rev. B. W. Krentz conducted the services in the Baptist church which was filled with a great number of relatives and friends.

Lucy Grenz, 99, Napoleon, N.D., died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Wishek Nursing Home, Wishek, N.D.

Lucy Freier was born Sept. 28, 1904, in Friedenstal, Bessarabia Russia, the daughter of Phillip and Dorothea (Ehli) Freier. In 1909, she emigrated with her parents and her brother, Jacob, to the United States. They settled on a farm in Campbell County near Eureka, S.D. In 1913, they moved to a farm southwest of Streeter, in Grenz Township, North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in the area at the schoolmaster’s house. She married Jacob Grenz on March 13, 1930, at Hope Evangelical Church near Streeter. They lived on several farms in the Napoleon area. She enjoyed homemaking, working in the farm, raising chickens and milking cows. In 1943, they bought the Hoffman farm in Grenz Township, where they lived and farmed until they retired from farming and moved to Streeter. They later built a home in Napoleon. He died in 1992. She became a resident of the Wishek Nursing Home in 1995.

She is survived by a son, Marvin (Florence), Napoleon; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Alan, and three brothers, Jacob, Edward and Gust.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, United Methodist Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Ronn Wilke officiating.
Prayer Service: 7 p.m. today, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.

The funeral for Lydia Bitterman Grenz, 89, Lodi, Calif., formerly Streeter, N.D., will be at 1 Saturday in Ebenzer United Methodist Church, Streeter. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 Friday in Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, and one hour before services in the church. She died Monday, Nov. 27, 1995.

Lydia Schwarzwalter was born Oct. 11, 1906, near Streeter, where she grew up and attended school. On Oct. 10, 1938, she married Jacob Bitterman. They lived in Streeter. He died in 1961. In 1970 she moved to Lodi. She married Emil Grenz in 1977. He died in 1988 [1986].

She is survived by a daughter, Grace (Ted) Norgard, Lockeford, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Martha Grenz, 95, Baptist Home, Bismarck, died March 5, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home, where she had been a resident since 1994. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Napoleon Baptist Church, with the Revs. Wes Gerber and Harold Mindeman officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon City Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Martha was born on Oct. 2, 1902, near Streeter, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Betz) Brenneise. She was raised and educated in the Streeter area. Martha married Otto Grenz on Oct. 19, 1920, at the Flat Baptist Church in Logan County. They lived with his parents until 1925, when they moved to Napoleon. Mr. Grenz died on June 3, 1972. Martha moved to Bismarck in 1987.

She was a member of Napoleon Baptist Church, charter member of the Women's Missionary Fellowship, Director of Children's Sunday School and Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was active in community activities and a charter member of Thursday Study Club.

Martha is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Alexzine and Bob Brooks, Minot; one sister, Freda Dockter, Mequon, Minn.; three granddaughters, Lisa Lindquist, Candy Brooks and Becky Nelson; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Roland Grenz, 90, died Sept. 25, 2008. at the Benedictine Living Center , Garrison. Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Bismarck Baptist Church , Bismarck . Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens , Bismarck .

Roland was born Sept. 2, 1918 on a farm near Burnstad, the son of Fred Grenz Sr. and Christina (Schnaidt) Grenz. He attended grade school at Napoleon Public School .

Eileen E. Greshik, 90, of Wimbledon, ND departed this earthly life to meet her Lord on March 28, 2008 at Central Dakota Village. Eileen was born September 12, 1917 at Gackle, ND, the daughter of Theodore and Susan (Gilbert) Roberts. She grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1935. She worked as a clerk for the County Nurse after graduation from high school.

During the 1920’s and early 1930’s she lived in various foster homes in the Jamestown area. From an early age, foster children were expected to work in the homes where they lived to pay for their room and board. Later in life Eileen spoke about the abuses of foster children to various community groups and she became an advocate for the rights of foster children.

She married Leonard Greshik on September 14, 1935 in Cooperstown, N.D. They resided in Jamestown and later moved to Georgetown, MN, and then to Hunter, ND where he worked as a machinist and mechanic. In 1940, they moved to Minneapolis, MN where her husband was a Foreman for Minneapolis Moline. In 1945, they moved back to ND and in 1950 they moved to Wimbledon, where she has resided ever since. Her husband died in 1965.

After her husband’s sudden death, she took on many new roles, which included business woman, college student, volunteer, community supporter and she continued the most important role in her life, nurturing her family.

Eileen’s home community of Wimbledon was very important to her. She served as the Park Commissioner on the City Council for a number of years and also served as a City Council Member. She was the first woman to serve in either of these roles. During her tenure as the Park Commissioner, the Wimbledon Park was further developed and the tennis court was constructed. She was also a member of the Wimbledon Improvement Corporation and a member of the "17er Club". She and Kathleen Blinsky were instrumental in developing and publishing the original Wimbledon Alert newsletter, which they published for many years.

The Lord had a very special place in Eileen’s life. She was a member of the St. Boniface Church for sixty years. She sang in the church choir for 58 years and also taught catechism for many of those years. She held many different offices in the St. Boniface Alter Society and was Cemetery Director of the Church for four years.

Music remained a large part of her life. She was a member of the J-Notes, (a Jamestown musical group). In high school she and the choir took a trip to Chicago to sing in the play "HMS Pinafore". A highlight in her musical career was singing with Peggy Lee, who also had lived in Wimbledon.

Eileen earned many awards over her years of service to her community and other organizations. She was recognized for 35 years of Volunteer Services at the ND State Hospital. She received the True Grit Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service to her community. She also volunteered at Central Dakota Village and received recognition as Volunteer of the Year. The Disabled American Veterans recognized her for Outstanding Generosity and Devotion to their organization.

Eileen loved her family, friends and community and she shared her kindness and generosity to all who knew her. She was well known for making candies, baked goods, jellies and canned goods. She loved to share these gifts with everyone. She would also play Mrs. Santa Claus for the kindergarten and first graders at the Wimbledon School. Also, stray animals looking for handouts were never turned away from her back door. Giving was much more important than receiving to Eileen.

Eileen is survived by four daughters, Susan (Tom) Brandau, Buchanan, N.D, Yvonne (Loran) Soleim and Cheryl (Robert) Brown, both Jamestown, Mardi Martinson, Madison, WI; four sons, Lynn (Mary), Spiritwood Lake, N.D. James (Kathryn), San Marcos, CA, George (Debbie), Wimbledon, N.D. and Ted, West Fargo, N.D, 20 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 7 great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her beloved sister, Helen Baker and a brother, Harvey Roberts.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday April 2, 2008 in the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Wimbledon, ND, with Father Steven Meyer, officiating.

Ella Groskreutz, 96, Carrington, N.D., died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington.

Ella Sophia Schroeder was born Nov. 4, 1913, at the family farm in Rose Hill Township, Bordulac, N.D., the daughter of William and Freda (Grager) Schroeder. She was confirmed on July 21, 1924, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bordulac. She grew up and attended grade school in Bordulac and Rose Hill No. 2 and graduated from Bordulac High School, Bordulac, on May 27, 1932. She married Eric Groskreutz on Nov. 4, 1938, in Kensal, N.D. They lived in Carrington where she worked at Borth and Speidel’s Department Store, Farmers Union Oil, Farmers Union Insurance and Farmers Union Credit Union. She was the telephone answering service for Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, for 40 years. He died Dec. 2, 1995. She entered Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, in July 2006. She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, quilting and reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister, Lillian Wolsky; and a brother, Harold.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington, with the Rev. Richard Biberdorf officiating.

1938 - 2008 Betty Lou Gross, passed away on Sept. 5, 2008, of a massive stroke, at the age of 69. Leaves us with her beautiful smile, great laugh, hugs, kisses and of course a heart of GOLD! that will always be remembered. Betty was born in Lear, North Dakota, on October 29, 1938 and married Joseph Gross on June 19, 1954. Betty completed her GED, was a founder and partner in MGM Bindery, San Carlos, CA. Betty and Joe moved from Wishek, ND where Jarvis was born then moved to Anaconda, MT where Jamayne and Jadell were born. Finally off to sunny California were Jody was born and they have been here for 45 years. Betty loved camping, walking and traveling. She traveled to Paris, France, Vancouver, Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. She also visited 7 Islands in the Caribbean and at least 48 states within the US. Mom was baptized a Seventh Day Adventist and was the first woman deacon in the Burlingame Church. She is survived by her husband Joseph Gross, son Jarvis Gross and his wife Kathy, daughters Jamayne Gross, Jadell Gross and her husband John Mighetto and son Jody Gross. Betty had two grandchildren, Megan Gross and Jarvin Homer, and a great-grandchild Brook Marie Homer. She was predeceased by her parents Fred H. and Martha Becker, siblings Lloyd Becker and Mavis Warren. Betty is survived by siblings, Wilbert Becker ND, Elda and Morris Ruff ND, Clarence Becker CA, and Darwin and Darlene Aitken AZ. Her best friends included her husband Joe, sister Darlene, Carole, Stephen, Nancy, Trudy, Jo Jo, Marilynn, Tony, Lori, Cheryl and Anita! Heaven has gained an angel. Betty Lou Gross of San Mateo, CA died Sept. 5, 2008 suffering a massive stroke at the age of 69. Betty was born on a farm 5 miles east of Lehr to Fred H. and Martha (Geigle) Becker on Oct. 29, 1938.

She married Joe Gross on June 19, 1954. They lived in the Lehr area for a few years then moved to Anaconda, MT; after several years they moved to San Mateo, CA where they lived for 45 years.

Earl Iver Grosz, 82, Kulm, N.D., died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, N.D.

Mr. Grosz was born May 2, 1921, in McIntosh County, near Fredonia, N.D., the son of David and Theresa (Weispfenning) Grosz. He grew up and attended country school in Antelope School District. He entered the U.S. Navy on June 20, 1944, and served during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he began farming on the family farm near Kulm. He married Edna Schock on Feb. 14, 1947. They farmed in the Kulm area until they retired and moved into Kulm. She died April 27, 1993. He married Anna Marie (Knopp) Billigmeier on Dec. 17, 1993. He was a member of First Congregational Church and Kulm American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie; three sons, Clyde (Lezlie), Hazen, N.D., Dale (Renee), Wahpeton, N.D., and Gary (Shirley), Kulm; four daughters, Joyce (Robert) Toth, Boulder City, Nev., Margie (Gary) Kuhlman, San Marcos, Calif., Carolina (John) Kuipers, Tappen, N.D., and Donna (Gary) Docktor, Jamestown; a brother, James (Genevieve), Breckenridge, Minn.; a sister, Lucille (Herman) Munsch, Kulm; and 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Earl Grosz, 82, Kulm, were held Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with Rev. Jerry Van Curler officiating. He died June 14 at Wishek Community Hospital.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna; a brother, Willard Grosz; a sister Eliza Harr; a brother and sister who died in infancy, Delbert and Janet Grosz, and a grandson, Aaron Kuipers.

Interment was in Kulm Congregational Cemetery. Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Kulm was in charge of arrangements.

Selma S. Schlecht was born April 4, 1946, in Jamestown, the daughter of Godhielf and Susie (Buerkle) Schlecht. She attended elementary school in Kulm, N.D., and graduated from Edgeley (N.D.) High School in 1964. She married Douglas L. Groth on May 28, 1966, in Enderlin, N.D. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1967 at the University of North Dakota, Ellendale, and a master’s degree in education in 1983 at Northern State University, Aberdeen, S.D. She was a fifth-grade teacher in Wyndmere, N.D., for 11 years and spent four summers as a “summer migrant” teacher in Fairmount, N.D. They moved to Selby in 1978. She was an elementary principal and junior high teacher at the Selby area school for 20 years. She entered the Reading Enhancement program and was recently the Aberdeen area regional leader with S.D. Reads. She was a member of many professional organizations. She was a council member and teacher of religious education at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed teaching, traveling and golf.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, April, Rochester, Minn.; four brothers, Oliver (June) and Chester, both Gackle, N.D., and Wesley (Connie) and Solomon “Sonny” (Judy), both Edgeley; and a sister, Murhel (James) Carlson, Ellendale.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, April; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Schlecht.

Services: held April 13, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Selby, with the Rev. Todd Reitmeyer officiating.

Aberdeen - Erwin Gruneich, 85, of Aberdeen, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 West Melgaard Road, Aberdeen, with Rev. Richard Riedel and Rev. Jack Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Cemetery, Kulm, N.D. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m., Tuesday, at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 South Main St., Aberdeen, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Erwin Gruneich was born Oct. 24, 1919, at Kulm, N.D. to Christoph and Christina (Schlenker) Gruneich. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. As a young man, he farmed with his parents. Erwin married Hulda C. Schlauch on Nov. 17, 1940, at Kulm, N.D. They made their first home and farmed on the Gruneich homestead south of Kulm. In 1952, they moved into Kulm, but continued to farm. He also drove school bus for 12 years. In 1965 the family moved to Aberdeen, where he worked at Presentation College until the time of his retirement in 1981. For several years Erwin was also a courtesy driver for Miller-Huebl Funeral Home. Erwin was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Aberdeen and was a past member of First Congregational Church in Kulm, N.D., where he served as a youth director and was active in church choir and the men's choir. Survivors include his wife, Hulda of Aberdeen; two daughters, Karen (Michael) Johannes of Prior Lake, Minn., and Pamela (Darold) Opp of Aberdeen; two sisters, Mellisina Mueller of Mandan, N.D., and Evangeline (Dan) Beck of Lasbanes, Calif., and three grandchildren, Marcus Johannes, Christina Johannes and Brian Opp. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and one grandson. Casketbearers will be Ron Feickert, Gerald Feickert, Steven Summers, Marcus Johannes, Donovan Fey and Rick Schlauch. Honorary casketbearers will be all of Erwin's friends.

Alice Gumke, 90, Gackle, N.D., died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Alice Koenig was born Dec. 21, 1914, at Alfred, N.D., the daughter of Gottfried and Christina (Fode) Koenig. She received her elementary education in the local rural school and was raised in the area where she helped on the family farm. She married Karl Gumke on May 10, 1938, at LaMoure, N.D. They lived on a farm 11 miles southeast of Gackle where they farmed. In 1982, they moved into Gackle and retired. She entered Central Dakota Village in June 2003. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Ruby Unrath, Bismarck, N.D.; a son, Robert ( Nancy ), Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Elsie Sommerfield, Superior, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, a brother and four sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. Russ Pollock officiating.

Eileen Gumke, 78, Gackle, N.D., died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at MedCenter One Hospital, Bismarck, N.D.

Eileen Ritola was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Edgeley, N.D., the daughter of August and Lillian (Anderson) Ritola. They moved to Gackle where she attended the local rural school and later received her GED. She attended Edmonds (Wash.) Community College. She married Ray Gumke on May 21, 1954, in Gackle. They lived on a farm 10 miles southeast of Gackle until 1966 when they moved to Edmonds. They returned to Gackle in 1977 where she worked at Ann’s Cafe and the Gackle Library as a librarian. He died Nov. 18, 2002. She entered MedCenter One Golden Manor, Steele, N.D., in 2003. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, and the American Legion Auxiliary where served as president.

She is survived by four daughters, Marlys (Jerry) Kinzler-Spence, Entiat, Wash., Corinne Haugen, Moses Lake, Wash., Vickie Larson, Long Beach, Miss., and Sandra (Dave) Feland, Steele; five sons, Rodney (Janice), Las Vegas, Ronald (Cindi), Milleville, Calif., Clinton (Cheryl), Fargo, N.D., Kevin (Kathy), Quincy, Wash., and Dale (Holly), York, Pa.; a sister, Marion (Delmar) Montgomery, LaMoure, N.D.; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Clyde, her parents, six brothers and two sisters.

Karl Gumke, 95, Gackle, N.D., died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Mandan Care Center, Mandan, N.D.

Mr. Gumke was born Oct. 23, 1913, at Gackle, the son of John M. and Carolina (Knodel) Gumke. He received his elementary education at the local rural school and helped on the family farm. He married Alice Koenig on May 10, 1938, at LaMoure, N.D. They lived and farmed 11 miles southeast of Gackle. They retired in 1982 and moved into Gackle. She died in 2005. He continued to live in Gackle until 2009, when he entered the Mandan Care Center. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, and was the Gutschmidt Township treasurer for 33 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruby Unrath, Bismarck, N.D.; a son, Robert (Nancy), Cleveland, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Marvelyn Gumke, 90, Jamestown, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Marvelyn Brady was born Sept. 17, 1918, at Jud, N.D., the daughter of Thomas and Louise (Bauer) Brady. She grew up and attended rural school and Jud High School. She married Gerhard Gumke on July 2, 1936, at Edgeley, N.D. They lived southeast of Gackle, N.D., until 1939, when they moved to a farm near Jud. In 1942, they moved to a farm two miles east of Alfred, N.D., where they farmed until 1972. They moved into Alfred in 1978. He died in 1979. She later moved to Jud. She entered the Gackle Care Center for one year and in the fall of 2008, she entered Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.

She is survived by three sons, Gordon (Darlene), Streeter, N.D., Murray (Karen), Jamestown, and Marlin, Lisbon, N.D.; two daughters, Mary Lou (Harvey) Konrad, Jud, and LaDonna (Gordie) Berg, Bismarck, N.D.; a brother, Bill (Lillian), Clearwater, Kan.; a sister, Elnora Gumke, Edgeley; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Robert and Ramone; her parents; five brothers; and a sister.

Patricia Ann Bosch was born Aug. 31, 1963, in Bismarck, N.D., the daughter of Joe and Alvina (Franck) Bosch. She lived in Hazelton, N.D., until 1970, when the family moved to Streeter, N.D. She graduated from Streeter High School in 1981. She entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1981, at Fargo, N.D. She served in Germany and was discharged June 6, 1983, at Fort Dix, N.J., with the rank of private first class. She married Lonnie Torrez on Dec. 11, 1982, at Luxembourg, Germany, where they lived. In 1986 she moved to Jamestown, where she worked at the Jamestown Post Office. She married Bruce Gumke on June 1, 1993, in Jamestown. They lived on a farm near Gackle, N.D. She worked for area post offices for 19 years. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Gackle. She enjoyed fishing, softball, gardening and playing cards.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce; two sons, Justin Torrez, Fargo, and Jake Gumke, Jud; a daughter, Jessica Torrez, Jud; a sister, Betty (Jack) Gross, Jamestown; and four brothers, Dave (Sherri Allard), Williston, N.D., Mark (Sylvia), Kulm, N.D., Steve (Raelene), Streeter, and Frank (Tracy Holmstrom), Napoleon, N.D.

Raymond Gumke, 83, Gackle, N.D., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Medcenter One, Bismarck, N.D.

Mr. Gumke was born Dec. 15, 1918, on the family farm 10 miles southeast of Gackle, the son of Christian and Rebecca (Weispfenning) Gumke. He received his elementary education at the rural school Feska #1. In 1937 he entered the Civil Conservation Corp and served for six months. He married Lillian Metz on Oct. 6, 1940, in Fredonia, N.D. They lived and farmed 10 miles southeast of Gackle. She died in 1952. He continued to lived on the farm. He married Eileen Ritola Fulmer on May 21, 1954, in Gackle. They lived on a farm 10 miles southeast of Gackle, where they farmed. In 1966 they moved to Edmonds, Wash., where he worked as a fork lift operator for Wood Specialty, Mountlake Terrace, Wash. After being disabled at work, they returned to Gackle in June 1977. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle. He served as a clerk for Gutschmidt Township for 26 years and helped reorganize the Gackle School District. He was a lifetime member of Gackle Wildlife. He was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Valley City, N.D.; four daughters, Marlys (Kenneth) Kinzler, East Wenatchee, Wash., Corinne (Douglas) Haugen, Moses Lake, Wash., Vickie (Larry) Larson, Gackle, and Sandra (Dave) Feland, Steele, N.D.; six sons, Rodney (Janice), Las Vegas, Nev., Ronald, Millville, Calif., Clyde (Linda), Jacksonville, Fla., Clinton (Cheryl), Fargo, N.D., Kevin, George, Wash., and Dale (Holly), York, Pa.; a sister, Pauline Ost, Jamestown; 17 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, four brothers, six sisters, a half brother and a half sister.

Walter R. Gumke, 75, Jamestown, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Mr. Gumke was born Jan. 27, 1926, at Gackle, N.D., the son of Jacob and Louise (Schlecht) Gumke. He grew up in Gackle, receiving his education in a local rural school. He married Hilda Schultz Sept. 24, 1950, at Medina, N.D. He entered the U.S. Army Sept. 30, 1950, at Fargo, N.D. He served in Germany, and was honorably discharged Sept. 18, 1952, at Ft. Custer, Mich., with the rank of CPL. They lived in Jamestown, following his discharge. He worked for Nash Finch as a truck driver and later worked for the City of Jamestown in the street department until 1980. He retired because of health reasons. He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Jamestown, American Legion and the Vets Club.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Shirley (Dave) Cotton, Indianapolis, Ind., and Joyce (Butch) Randall, Everett, Wash.; three sons, Don (Joanne), Dave and Doug (Robin), all Jamestown; two brothers, Harry (Clarinda), California, and Dennis (Judy), Tower City, N.D.; six sisters, Irene (Roy) Frandsen, California, Edna (Herbert) Presler, Texas, Ella (Alton) Deutscher, Esther (Art) Henke and Mable Meyer, all Jamestown, and Doreen Gumke, Fergus Falls, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death his parents, a sister, a brother and two siblings in infancy.

Alvin Gums, 79, Jamestown, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Mr. Gums was born May 19, 1927, at Streeter, N.D., the son of Gottlieb and Katherina (Becker) Gums. He received his elementary education in the local school and grew to up in the Streeter area. Around 1941 he went with his father to work in the shipyards for about a year and a half. He returned to Streeter. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 9, 1945, at Milwaukee, Wis. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was discharged Feb. 8, 1946, at Great Lakes, Ill., with the rank of SN1. He married Mary Marie Swanson on Sept. 3, 1947. They lived in Jamestown where he worked for the North Dakota State Hospital until 1948 when he started working for Bridgeman Russel Creamery and continued for 23 years. He then went into partnership with Elroy Kriel and opened K & G Meat Market. After one year they became sole owners of the Meat Market which they owned and operated until 1993 when they retired. She died in July 1997. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Jamestown.

He is survived by two sons, Richard (Susan), and James (Marcia), both Jamestown; two daughters, Doreen (Steven) Wagner, Jamestown, and Julie (Donald) Ressler, Sioux Falls, S.D.; a sister, Rebecca Beglau, Bismarck, N.D.; a brother, Arthur, Mandan, N.D.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Maxine; his parents; six brothers and three sisters.

Elizabeth Gums, 91, Jamestown, N.D., died Saturday, July 24, 1999, in Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Elizabeth Heiser was born Feb. 3, 1908, in Odessa, Ukraine. She moved with her parents to Gackle, N.D., when she was 3 months old. They later moved to Streeter, where she attended school. On Oct. 6, 1924, she married Christ Gums in Jamestown. They lived on his family's farm near Medina, N.D., for five years. In 1929 they moved to a different location near Medina, where they farmed until retiring to Jamestown in 1958. He died in 1965. She worked for North Dakota State Hospital, Jamestown, for 15 years until retiring in 1973.

She is survived by four daughters, Viola Carlson, Leona Daede, both Jamestown, ...

Germaine "Geri" E. Deutscher was born April 25, 1954, in Gackle, N.D., the daughter of Alton "Al" and Ella (Gumke) Deutscher. She attended two years of school in Streeter, N.D., then attended Jamestown Public School graduating in 1972 from Jamestown High School. She married Roger L. Gums Jan. 12, 1973, in Jamestown. She worked at White Drug, Jamestown, and operated a day care for 18 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown. She worked for Stutsman County Bank for five years. She enjoyed sewing, baking and camping.

She is survived by a son, Jason (Cristin), Thief Rivers Falls, Minn.; her parents, Jamestown; her grandmother, Amelia Deutscher, Jamestown; and two granddaughters.

Randy Gums, 40, Jamestown, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Mr. Gums was born Feb. 19, 1960, at Jamestown, the son of Alvin and Delores (Kreiger) Gums. He attended school at Gackle, N.D., graduating from Gackle High School in 1978. He attended North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton, and graduated as a computer operator. He entered the U.S. Army and was discharged with the rank of PFC/E3. He married Margo Dahl in March 1984 at Gackle. They lived in Fargo, where he worked at Dakota Clinic and later at Dakota Hospital as a computer operator. In 1994 he began work for a farmer near Perley, Minn., until 1997. He moved to Jamestown, where he worked as Dakota Breads, then began work for Bruce Glinz Farms. He later worked at Hanson Tires. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle. He enjoyed softball, fishing and watching the Minnesota Vikings.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Delores and Melvin Muller, Gackle; two brothers, Roger (Germaine) and Rodney (Robin), both Jamestown; a sister, Rayette (Jim) Walters, Jamestown; a step-sister, Kristie Hermanson, Zimmerman, Minn.; and a special friend, Susan Schutt, Jamestown.

Roger Gums, 56, Thief River Falls, Minn., formerly of Jamestown and Gackle, died Feb. 10, 2009, at Frazee Care Center, Frazee, Minn. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle. Interment will be in Gackle Cemetery.

Olivia K. (Denning) Gunderson, 86, of Helena, a former Great Falls resident, died of natural causes Wednesday at a Helena hospital.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home. Her funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with burial in Manchester Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters Linda Kay (Cliff) Roessner of Helena and Sheila M. Arambula of Salt Lake City, Utah; sisters Erna Wilson of Spokane, Wash., and Esther Bender of Great Falls; a brother, Irvin Denning of Ashley, N.D.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Gunderson, in 2001; and two brothers.

Olivia was born March 29, 1919, in Venturia, N.D. She left home at age 18 and moved to Great Falls, where she was a cook and a waitress. During World War II, she was a riveter at the former East Base, now Malmstrom Air Force Base. She married Arthur E. Gunderson in 1945.

Olivia was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 23 years. She and Arthur were active members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Great Falls for more than 50 years. She was a "choir mother," who helped keep children quiet and supplied them with snacks during choir practice, and she also assisted with confirmation class dinners. She was a current member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Helena.

Olivia enjoyed boating, camping, fishing and gardening. She also enjoyed making ornaments for family members for Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter.

Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Assistance Dogs Foundation, which trains service dogs for the disabled, P.O. Box 513, Jud, ND 58454; or the Alzheimer Association.

Rose Marie Gunsch, 92, Bismarck, died Dec. 23, 2004, at a Bismarck medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, Dec. 27, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Pastor Ilo Madden officiating. Burial will be at Dickinson Cemetery.

Marie Wentz was born June 16, 1912, in Streeter to George and Margaretha (Graff) Wentz. She attended school in Streeter. Marie married Otto Gunsch Sept. 5, 1935, in Streeter. They moved to Dickinson in 1955, and opened Service Drug. Otto died in 1964.

She was a member of First Congregational-United Church of Christ, Eastern Star and American Legion Auxillary. Marie enjoyed baking and cooking for her family, knitting, fishing, playing cards and bingo.

Marie Gunsch is survived by her sons, Merle Gunsch, Lewistown, Mont., and Richard (Marilyn) Gunsch, Bismarck; one daughter, Kathy Decker, Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; her brothers and sisters, Martha George, Bismarck, Ed (Bev) Wentz, Sun City, Ariz., Ione Schwartzwalter, Fargo, Ray (Lois) Wentz, Jamestown, LeRoy (Velma) Wentz, Lemmon, S.D., and LoEtta Feigert, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto Gunsch; five brothers and two sisters.

Theobald "Theo" Gunsch, 84, Jamestown, died Friday, May 26, 2006, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Mr. Gunsch was born April 25, 1922, at Gackle, N.D., the son of Fredrich and Christiana (Frey) Gunsch. He moved with his family to Medina, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Sidney, Mont., for a year before entering the U.S. Army on Dec. 8, 1942. He served as a medic during World War II in Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland and participated in the Battle of Normandy and Battle of the Bulge. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Overseas Stripes, European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre ribbons and five Bronze Stars. After his discharge on Oct. 10, 1945, he returned to North Dakota and worked in Dawson. He married Lillian Gladys Wick on May 30, 1948, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson, N.D. They moved to Jamestown in 1955. He worked for Nash-Finch and then the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 25 years. He then worked for Lisko Funeral Chapel for 10 years. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, the Jamestown Eagles, Elks, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans where he served two terms as commander, and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and often sold woodwork items.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Susan (Rod) Richter, Minot, N.D., and Vicki (Richard) Livesay, Bismarck, N.D.; a son, Michael (Vickie), Bismarck; two sisters, Odella Mathias and Helen Hillius, both Jamestown; a brother-in-law, Lester (Minnie) Wick, Robinson; and five sisters-in-law, Ruth Wick, Fargo, N.D., Mary Wick, Steele, N.D., Luella Wick Semmens, Woodworth, N.D., Junes Englerth, Park River, N.D., and Emilia Gunsch, Turlock, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Rae; his parents; four brothers, August, Andy, Henry and Louie; and seven sisters, Maggie, Lydia, Caroline, Eva, Emma, Mary and Martha.

Bernice Guthmiller, 77, Jamestown, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Bernice Rose Hins was born Nov. 24, 1931, in Medina, N.D., the daughter of Gottlieb and Emma (Kleingartner) Hins. She grew up and attended school in Medina, graduating from Medina High School. She was employed by JC Penney and Tempo in Jamestown. She married Leslie L. Guthmiller on June 12, 1955, in Medina. She was a waitress at the Parkway Café and a cook in the Jamestown Public School system, and for 20 years at Jamestown Hospital, where she retired from in 1994. She then worked as a volunteer at R.S.V.P. and Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center. She was also a substitute cook for Jamestown Public Schools. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, where she was active in circle and Bible studies and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Deborah Kay Guthmiller and Charlotte Bernice Guthmiller, both Jamestown; a son, Stephen (Dawn), Jamestown; two sisters, Darlene (Gerhardt) Ellingson, Grace City, N.D., and Clara (Ralph) Fiechtner, Monango, N.D.; two stepsisters, Leona (Rueben) Klundt, Gackle, N.D., and Alice (Leroy) Buck, Streeter, N.D.; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ardella Hins, Wanda Topp and Leona Walcker; her stepmother, Christina Miller Hins; and a stepbrother, Norman Miller.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Ruth Kaden officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Thursday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Medina Cemetery, Medina, in the spring.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dorothea “Dora” Guthmiller, 95, Jamestown, formerly of Pettibone, N.D., died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Dorothea Martin was born Feb. 12, 1910, near Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Carolina (Albrecht) Martin. She married Peter Guthmiller on Nov. 22, 1932, at Petersville Lutheran Church in Pettibone. They farmed near Pettibone until 1966 when they moved to McClusky, N.D. He died May 29, 1977. She moved to Jamestown in 1980. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran church, Jamestown, and was active in Lutheran Women Missionary League and Bible study. She enjoyed fishing, sewing and card playing.

She is survived by three daughters, Lorraine (Gary) Asmus, Joplin, Mo., Mildred (Robert) Meyer, Havelock, Iowa, and Phyllis (Ray) Denchfield, Jamestown; a son, Gordon (Alene), Morgan Hill, Calif.; two sisters, Katherine “Katy” (Rudolph) Walz, Jamestown, and Bertha Remmick, Wishek, N.D.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers and three sisters.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Tom Eckstein officiating.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Petersville Cemetery, Pettibone.

Magdalena Dorr Guthmiller, 86, Napoleon, N.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Wishek (N.D.) Hospital.

Magdalena Dockter was born Sept. 9, 1915, at the family farm home south of Streeter, N.D., the daughter of John M. and Katherina (Schaffer) Dockter. She attended the local rural school, where she received her elementary education. She married Rudolph Dorr on Nov. 27, 1934, at his parents' home south of Streeter. They lived 10 1/2 miles south of Streeter. He died in 1956. She continued to live on the farm. She married Adolph Guthmiller on Oct. 10, 1959, in Streeter, where they lived. In 1990 she entered Central Dakota Village, Jamestown, where she lived until 1993. She then entered the Gackle (N.D.) Care Center. He died in 1994. In 2001 she entered Napoleon (N.D.) Care Center. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Streeter.

She is survived by a son, Floyd, Jamestown; two brothers, Jacob (Lizzy) and Gottlieb (Doris), both Streeter; a sister, Caroline Schatz, West Fargo, N.D.; and a sister-in-law, Esther Dockter, Fargo, N.D.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rev. Robert Pestal officiating.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and one hour before the service, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Neudorf Cemetery, west of Gackle.

MEDINA -- Violet Guthmiller, 73, Medina, died Jan. 21, 2000 in Mandan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at English Lutheran Church, Medina, with the Rev. Robert Pestal officiating. Burial will be in Medina Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, at Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Violet Kanewischer was born Oct. 19, 1926 near Lehr, the daughter of Reinhold Kanewischer and Eva (Gunsch) Kanewischer. At an early age she moved with her parents to the Medina area where they lived at several locations. She received her elementary education at Medina and grew to womanhood in the vicinity.

She and Philip G. Guthmiller were married on March 29, 1946 at Streeter. They made their home on a farm 10 miles southwest of Medina. They continued to reside on the farm following his retirement and in November of 1990, they moved into Medina. Following the death of her husband on Feb. 7, 1991, she has continued to reside in Medina.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Ronald) Otto, Mandan, Audrey (Michael) Steffan Jr., Lakewood, Colo.; three granddaughters; one brother and one sister, Lorraine Boehm, Mandan, and Marvin Kanewischer, Miles City, Mont. (Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Elva Gutschmidt, 81, Gackle, N.D., died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek, N.D.

Elva D. Ost was born Aug. 23, 1928, near Fredonia, N.D., the daughter of Ben and Emma (Ruff) Ost. She grew up and attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education. She married Wilbert Gutschmidt on June 25, 1950, at her parents’ farm near Fredonia. They lived on the Gutschmidt family farm 14 miles south of Gackle for 45 years. She worked at the Kulm Super Valu for a short time. They retired in 1995 and moved into Gackle. She entered Wishek Home for the Aged in January 2006. She was a member of the Nazareth Congregational Church, Fredonia, American Legion Auxiliary, Fredonia, and in 1968 became a member of the United Church of Christ, Gackle. She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking German dishes.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Paul (Donna), Devils Lake, N.D., and Roger (Linda), Gackle; a brother, Oscar (Viola), Lehr, N.D.; a sister, Edna Koenig, Kulm, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Viola Ost, Kulm; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, United Church of Christ, Gackle, with the Rev. Tim Blackman officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. today, Haut Funeral Homes, Gackle.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial: Gackle Cemetery, Gackle.
