Violet Nagel, 73, Phoenix, Ariz., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002.

Violet May Wiederrich was born May 28, 1929, in Gackle, N.D., the daughter of Christian and Christine Wiederrich. She moved to Chandler, Ariz. She enjoyed homemaking.

She is survived by two daughters, Tina and Tammy (Jerry); a son, Trent (Denise); a sister, Esther (Warren) Markuson; four brothers, August (Tillie), Reinhold (Elva), Robert (Laurie), and Gottlieb Fiechner; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nagel.

Services: held Oct. 4, Serenity Chapel, Greenwood Memory Lawn, Phoenix, with the Rev. Emil Dockter officiating.

ElRoy N. Nathan passed away peacefully in his home in Chico, CA on March 12, 2007 at the age of 90. At his request no services will be held. Private family services will be held at a later date at a military cemetery.

He was born in Gackle on April 23, 1916, son of Edward and Pauline (Heinz) Nathan. He graduated from Wishek High School in 1934 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935. He later graduated from Interstate Business College in Fargo in 1940, where he met Muriel Towle from Napoleon.

ElRoy N. Nathan passed away peacefully on March 12, 2007 at his home in Chico, Calif., at the age of 90.

At his request, no services were held. Private family services will be held a later date at a military cemetery.

ElRoy was born in Gackle on Easter Morning, April 23,1916, the son of Edward and Pauline (Heinz) Nathan. He graduated from Wishek, High School in 1934 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935. He later graduated from Interstate Business College in Fargo, in 1940, where he met Muriel Towle from Napoleon. They eloped and were married July 14, 1941 in Miles City, Mont., and honeymooned in Yellowstone Park.

ElRoy was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and stationed at Fort Snelling, N.M., where he served until 1944. Moving to New Orleans, he graduated from the Transportation Corps Officer Candidate School as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1945. Transferred to the Brooklyn Army Base he served on ship duty on Army Troop Transports, crossing the Atlantic 24 times and later, processing thousands of World War II displaced persons arriving from DP camps.

ElRoy later served as transport commander on troop and mortuary ships between North Africa, Europe and the Brooklyn Army Base. It was, while stationed there, that his son, Howard, was born. Yet another transfer led him to Korea in August 1950, where he served with a TC Railway Operating Battalion traveling over most of South Korea until 1952. Reassigned to the Port of Whittier, Alaska, he served one year as harbormaster, and then was transferred to Seattle Army Base where he served until 1957. His next position was with NATO in La Rochelle, France, where he lived with his family until 1960, serving as paymaster. His last duty was transportation officer at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., where he retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1962.

After a wide-ranging military career, the family decided to finally settle somewhere and discovered Chico in 1962. ElRoy enrolled at Chico State College, receiving an MA in geography in 1966 and taught in the Geography Department for four years. He later became Director of University Services, a position he held until retiring in 1982. After retiring, ElRoy and Muriel enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling and attended 23 Elderhostel programs, which took them all over the country and to Canada. ElRoy also enjoyed photography, working on his computer and being the best husband, father, and grandfather that anyone knew.

ElRoy was a life member of the Butte County Historical Society and was president for two years. He was also a life member of the California Conference of Historical Societies, where he served as president in 1981-82. He was also a permanent member of the Conference Board. He was president of the Bidwell Mansion Cooperating Society and a life member of the Bidwell Mansion Association and was an officer and member of the Stansbury Home Preservation Society, Association of Northern California Records and Research, Sons-In-Retirement 110, Enloe Men's Associates and Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church. He volunteered with the American Cancer Society and most recently with Enloe Medical Center's Volunteers, installing lifeline for patients, of which he did until just a few months before his death.

ElRoy leaves behind, Muriel, his loving wife of 65 years; a sister, Lorine Ledbetter of Grass Valley, Calif.; a son, Howard and a daughter-in- law, Jamie; a granddaughter, Katie, and many relatives and friends.

ElRoy had a friend wherever he went and words cannot describe how much he will be missed.

Memorials may be given to the Butte County Historical Society or to the Bidwell Mansion Association, in care of the Neptune Society, 1353 E 8th Street, Chico, CA 95928.

Darlene Nelson, 71, West Fargo, N.D., died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at her home.

Darlene Delores Koenig was born June 7, 1936, on a farm near Alfred, N.D., the daughter of Theodore and Johanna (Schultz) Koenig. She grew up and attended school in the Alfred area. She moved to Jamestown with her family and also attended school. She worked as a waitress, a cook and a nurse’s aid. She moved to Washington where she worked for a time. She returned to Jamestown, and later moved to West Fargo. She married Robert Nelson on Oct. 27, 1967, in Jamestown. They lived in West Fargo, where she worked as a cook and waitress. They later operated the Stockyard Phillip 66 Service Station, West Fargo. She also worked at Premier Technology, West Fargo, for several years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kay Arnson, Minot, N.D.; a stepson, Dale (Virgie) Nelson, Fargo, N.D.; two stepdaughters, Geneva (Tom) Edgerly, West Fargo, and Virginia Doyle (Larry Niles), Bancroft, S.D.; a brother, John (Beth), Shoreview, Minn.; two sisters, Generva (Merlin) Weber, Forsyth, Mont., and Evangeline (Joe) Lewis, Manchester, Iowa; eight stepgrandchildren; and a special family friend, Vivian Spenst.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clinton "Speed."

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. today, West Funeral Home Chapel, West Fargo.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
Burial: North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan.

A funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 16603 N.E. 142nd Ave., Brush Prairie, for Florence Eleanor Nelson, who died Tuesday, March 9, 1999. She was 78. A homemaker who lived in Clark County for the past seven years, Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking and baking and taking care of children. Mrs. Nelson was born March 26, 1920, in Gackle, N.D. Her son, Stanley, died in 1991.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Harold, at home; two daughters, Marguerite Harvester and Yvonne Koskiniemi, both of Battle Ground; three sons, Roger of Battle Ground, Steven of Woodland and Robert of Duluth, Minn.; one sister, Evelyn Liimatainen of Babbitt, Minn.; 28 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Elim Cemetery in Brush Prairie. The casket will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Layne's Funeral Home in Battle Ground.

Gordon Ellsworth Nelson, 74, Duncanville, Texas, died Monday, March 7, 2005.

Mr. Nelson was born April 2, 1930, in Franklin, Minn. He was raised by his grandmother, Louise Nelson.  He attended Franklin High School.  He served in the U.S. armed forces and obtained an honorable discharge. He married LaVern Schlittenhard on March 10, 1966, at Reno, Nev. He worked for the U.S. Army Air Force Exchange Service for 30 years. The family lived in Colorado, Hawaii, North Dakota, Korea and Texas during his employment. He considered Gackle, N.D., his home. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mark and Steve, both Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Cindy, Dallas; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and grandmother.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Grace Baptist Church, Gackle, with the Rev. Timothy Blackman officiating.
Prayer service: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Haut Funeral Chapel, Gackle.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

John Nenow Sr., 82, Waterloo, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Ravenwood Health Center, Waterloo.

Mr. Nenow was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Streeter, N.D., the son of Nikolai and Mary (Russiff) Nenow. He married Marlyce Kliner on Nov. 20, 1949, in St. Paul, Minn. They later divorced. He was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 29 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Eagles and Moose clubs.

He is survived by two sons, Terry (Robin) and John D. (Carman), both Waterloo; three daughters, Elisebeth Grote, LaPorte City, Iowa, Rosellen (Mike) Friedel, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Sandra (Denny) Francis, Evansdale, Iowa; five brothers, Richard (Julie), Streeter, N.D., Mike (Vange), Jamestown, James (Leona), Frezno, Calif., Roger (Lois), Woodworth, N.D., and Nick Jr. (Ann), Aurora, Colo.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Neoni, Peter and George, and three sisters, Mary, Gina and Anne.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, Waterloo.
Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.
Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s Cemetery, Streeter.

Julianne Nenow, 65, Streeter, ND died Monday June 5, 2006 at the ManorCare in Fargo, ND.

Julianne Faleide was born July 15, 1940 at Maddock, ND, the daughter of Gerhard and Myrthle (Rognlie) Faleide. She attended school at Maddock, and graduated from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School, Maddock, and earned a BS Degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo. She spent the year of 1961-1962 in Berlin, Germany doing refugee work with the Lutheran Church. In 1962 she started teaching mathematics and French at the Streeter High School until January 1972.

She and Richard ‘Dic’ Nenow were married June 23, 1963 at the Viking Church near Maddock, ND. They made their home on the Nenow family farm SE of Streeter. Following their retirement they continued to reside on the farm.

She was a member of the St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Streeter and very active in 4-H for a number of years. She loved gardening, painting and the beauty of ranch life.

She is survived by her children, Pausha (Danny) Mastre, West Fargo, ND, Richard Jr., Streeter, ND, Mary Gina (Jason) Ingebrigtson, Oxbow, ND, 4 grandchildren, her mother, Myrthle Faleide, Devils Lake, ND, 1 sister, Judith (John) Johnson, Albuquerque, NM, 2 brothers, Gerhard Jr. (Barbara) Faleide, Lafayette, LA, Ronald (Judy) Faleide, Devils Lake, ND.

She was preceded in death by her father, her husband April 28, 2006,

The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday June 10, 2006 at the St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Streeter, ND with Rev. Brian Wasemoen, officiating. The interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at Streeter, ND. Visitation – 2-9 Thursday and 9-5 Friday at the Funeral Home Prayer Service – 7:00 PM Friday at the church in Streeter.

Richard Nenow, Sr.

Richard Nenow, 76, Streeter, ND died Friday afternoon April 28, 2006 in the Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND surrounded by his family.

Richard Nenow was born January 2, 1930 on the family farm southeast of Streeter, ND the son of Nikolai Nenow and Pausha (Mienoff) Nenow. He received his elementary education in the local school and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm. As a young man he worked on the Minow ranch near Miles City, MT for three years coming home in 1950 to start farming the home place.

He and Julianne Faleide were married June 23, 1963 at the Viking Church, near Maddock, North Dakota. They have made their home on the family farm southeast of Streeter where Richard was born. After his retirement he has continued to reside on the farm and help his son Richard farm the home place. He is a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Streeter, ND, member of the Farmers Co-op Elevator board for 20 some years.

Surviving are his wife, Julianne, Streeter, ND, his children, Pausha (Danny) Mastre, West Fargo, ND, Richard Jr., Streeter, ND, Mary Gina (Jason) Ingebrigtson, Oxbow, ND, 4 grandchildren, 3 brothers, Jim (Leona) Carmichael, CA, Mike (Vange) Nenow, Jamestown, ND, Roger (Lois) Nenow, Jamestown, ND, 1 half brother Nikolai (Anna) Nenow, Jr. Aurora, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 half brothers and 4 half sisters.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday May 3, 2006 in St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Streeter, ND with Rev. Brian Wasmoen, officiating.

Fred Netz, 86, Grants Pass, Ore., died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Netz was born July 16, 1917, near Gackle, N.D. He lived at Jamestown for a time. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He married Marian Elvina (Johnson) Clemens in March 1954. He worked in construction. They moved in 1990 to Grants Pass from Desert Hot Springs, Calif. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife; a sister, Pat Mueller, Bismarck, N.D.; a stepson, Raymond Clemens, Grants Pass; and a step-granddaughter.

Memorial service: held Sept. 16, Hull & Hull Funeral Directors Chapel, Grants Pass.

Martha Netz, 81, Kulm, N.D., died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, in Wishek (N.D.) Hospital.

Martha Ruele was born Jan. 28, 1918, in Marsh, Mont. She grew up near Coldwater, N.D. On Jan. 1, 1943, she married Harry Netz near Alfred, N.D. They lived near Kulm for two years, then moved to Forbes, N.D., where they lived for five years. They farmed near Fredonia, N.D., from 1950 to 1981, when they moved into Kulm. He died in 1984. She entered Gackle (N.D.) Care Center in 1996.

She is survived by a son, Alan (Gloria), Jamestown, N.D.; a sister, Lenora (Julius) Morse, Aberdeen, S.D.; a stepbrother, Reuben Hehr, Kulm; three ...

Ruth Netz, 92, Morgan, Utah, died June 12, 2007, at Ogden, Utah.

Ruth Remboldt was born March 10, 1915, in Gackle, N.D., the daughter of Chris and Caroline (Lang) Remboldt. She married Emil Netz on Oct. 18, 1946, in Elko, Nev. She retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1968 and volunteered for the Morgan Senior Center.

She is survived by a son, Bob (Billie), Morgan; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert, Ed C., Oscar and Reuben.

Services: held June 15.
Burial: North Morgan Cemetery, Morgan.

Christof Netzer Dies at Home

Christof Netzer, 86, longtime resident of the Alfred Community died Saturday, Oct. 8, at his home in Alfred.

He was born Dec. 18, 1879, in Bessarabia, So. Russia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Netzer. His father died when he was seven. He grew to manhood in his native land where he and Lydia Netzer were married in 1903. In 1906 they came to the United States and homesteaded six miles north of Gackle in Stutsman County.

In 1919 they moved to a farm near Alfred where they lived until 1940 when they moved into Alfred for their retirement. His wife died in 1958. An April 24, 1959, he and Mrs Anna Zieman [nee Schober] were married in Alfred, where the couple made their home.

Surviving are his wife, six children, Mrs. Carl Wolff, Lodi, Calif.; Mrs. Mildred Hollingsworth, Seattle; Mrs. Bill Smith, Bremerton, Wash.; Albert, Alfred; Emil, Jamestown; Emanuel, Edgeley; 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one step sister, Mrs. Mathilda Gebhardt, Wailbingen, Germany, one step brother, Gottlieb Pelz, Milwaukee, Wis.; five step children.

The funeral service for Christof Netzer, was held October 14, 1966 at the Grace Baptist Church in Gackle with Rev. R. C. Stading, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Helmuth Remmich played a program of organ music as friends and relatives came into and left the church.

"Face to Face" and "It is Well With My Soul" were sung by a duet, Mrs. Lloyd Janke and Mrs. Lloyd Schaffer, with Mrs. Helmuth Remmich playing the accompaniment.

The pallbearers were Alvin Hummel, Wilfred Thom, Jalmer Anderson, William Schlenker, Reuben Metz, and Ralph Geinert.

Burial was in the Alfred Cemetery with the Haut Funeral Home of Gackle in charge of arrangements. Out of state relatives attending were Mrs. Mildred Hollingsworth, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Carl Wolff, of Lodi, Calif.

Edna L. Netzer, 87, Jamestown, N.D., died Thursday, June 3, 1999, in Jamestown Hospital.

Edna Henne was born Dec. 5, 1911, in Alfred, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. On Oct. 8, 1933, she married Emil Netzer in Alfred. They farmed for several years before moving to Jamestown in 1946. She worked for Wynes Grocery, Jamestown. She later worked as a cook for Jamestown Café, the Twenty Club, Big Jim's and the American Legion. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by four sons, Clarence (Shirley), Spiritwood Lake, N.D., Orval (Mary), Huron, S.D., Milton (Mary), Ely, Minn., the Rev. Dwight (Darcy), Albert Lea, Minn.; two daughters, Clarice (the Rev. Abe) Reddekopp, Kansas ...

Emil Netzer, 89, Jamestown, N.D., died Sunday, May 17, 1998, in Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City, N.D.

Mr. Netzer was born July 8, 1908, in Alfred, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. On Oct. 8, 1933, he married Edna Henne in Alfred. They farmed for several years. In 1946 they moved to Jamestown, where he was employed at Devaney Transfer, Allied Van Lines, and Holiday Inn.

Bernard C. "Barney" Neumann, 85, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City, ND.

Barney Neumann was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Terry, MT, to John and Louise (Petri) Neumann. The family moved to Gackle, ND, where his mother died when he was less than 2 years old. Barney and his brothers lived with various relatives for a number of years before making their home with their aunt, Mollie (Neumann), and her husband, Carl Fredrickson. Barney attended several different schools in ND including Litchville where he graduated from high school in 1933.

In 1934 Barney received a teacher’s certificate from STC in Valley City. He taught in a rural Gackle school for two years. He spent the next two years with the Civilian Conservation Corps, much of that time in the Mt. Rainier, WA, area. He then attended NDSU in Fargo, receiving his degree in 1941. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Chi Fraternity.

After graduating from college he worked for his Uncle Albert Neumann running the Portal Drug Store, Portal, ND. In July 1946 he and his cousin, Emerson Neumann, bought the Rolla Drug Store in Rolla, ND. In July 1955 they also bought a drug store in Cando, ND, which they named Neumann Rexall Drug.

In January 1948 Barney and Anita "Tony" were married, making their home in Rolla.

In 1957 Barney and Emerson sold the Rolla Drug and Emerson kept sole ownership of the Neumann Drug in Cando. In October 1959 Barney moved to Valley City after purchasing the Valley Drug Store. He sold that drug store in 1977 to Jerry Schmidt.

Barney had his private pilot’s license and before moving to Valley City had his own plane. A long time member of the VC Country Club his life long favorite hobby being playing golf. Next was duplicate bridge and he had attained the rank of master in the American Contract Bridge League. He enjoyed goose and duck hunting, ping pong (table tennis) and league bowling. He was very interested in photography, astronomy and music. While in Rolla he played independent baseball and basketball and intramural basketball while attended NDSU.  Barney and Dolly Sorenson were married Jan. 23, 1965, in Valley City.

Survivors besides his wife, Dolly, include a stepdaughter, Dorothy (Stan) Puklich, Bismarck, ND; grandson, Blayne Puklich, Chanhassen, MN; granddaughter, Elyse Leiseth and grandson-in-law, Bruce Leiseth, Bismarck; a sister-in-law, Evelyn (Alvin) Neumann, Maddock, ND; nieces, Carol (Dave) Svingen, Luverne, MN, Karen (Dan) Birkeland, Sheyenne, ND, and Rachel (Dean) Markestad, Maddock; and a nephew, Dr. Jim (Darcy) Neumann, Fargo.

A number of cousins also survived, including Dorothy (Fredrickson) Pearson, Aurora, CO, Emerson (Janet) Neumann, Cando, Jane (Russell) Gilbertson, Bismarck, Bill (Jackie) Neumann, Bismarck, Bob (Debra) Neumann, Villa Hills, KY, and Colette (Ervin) Eissinger, Gackle.

Preceding him in death were two small children, Nora and Nancy Neumann, Rolla; two brothers, Dr. Alvin Neumann, and Capt. Leslie Neumann, bomber pilot, WWII; and an aunt, Mollie, and her husband, Carl Fredrickson.

Visitation: Tuesday, April 10, 1-8 PM, Peterson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, and one hour before the funeral in the church.
Funeral: Wednesday, April 11, 2001, 1 PM, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.
Burial: At a later date in Memory Gardens, 4 miles east of Valley City on I-94.

The funeral for Katie Nienow, 90, Jamestown, N.D., will be at 11 today in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Streeter, N.D. She died Tuesday, March 12, 1996.

Katie Klundt was born May 14, 1905, near Streeter, where she grew up and attended school. On Oct. 30, 1925, she married John Nienow in Jamestown. They farmed near Streeter. They retired in 1960 and moved to another farm near Streeter. He died in 1983. She then moved into Streeter, and later moved to Gackle, N.D. She entered Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown, in 1993.

She is survived by two sons, Edwin "Jack" (Verna), Streeter, Vernon "Red" (Joyce), Medina, N.D.; a daughter, Joyce (Eugene) Freier, Medina; three sisters, Lydia Herring, Great Falls, Mont., Bertha Bauske and Johanna ...

Emma Nill, 98, Ellendale, N.D., died Nov. 7, 2005, at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale.

Emma Rath was born May 25, 1907, south o Kulm, N.D., in German Township, Dickey County, the daughter of Andreas and Dorthea (Rath) Rath. She was baptized June 30, 1907. At age 7, she moved with her family to a farm seven miles northwest of Fredonia,  N.D. At age 9, she moved with her family to Kulm, where she began first grade and continued through grade five. She then worked for farm homes in the area. She was confirmed April 9, 1922, at Kulm Congregational Church. She married Theodore Nill on Sept. 2, 1928, at Merricourt Congregational Church, Merricourt, N.D. They lived fourteen miles west of Monango, N.D., where they farmed and raised livestock. In October 1975, they moved into Ellendale. He died Dec. 20, 1983. She moved to the Prince of Peace Care Center on Nov. 1, 2002. She enjoyed knitting, cooking German food, flower gardening, and having coffee with friends.

She is survived by two sons, Darwin (Diana), Monango, and Willis (Doris), Battle Lake, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Elsie Heinle, Bismarck, N.D.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five sisters, Mathilda Weispfenning, Lydia Kinzler, Hertha Hartman, Elsie Bond and Katherine in infancy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale, with the Rev. Adrienne Trhlik officiating.
Prayer service: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
Visitation: 2 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Alexander "Alex" Nitschke, 90, Jud, N.D., died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Jamestown Hospital.

Mr. Nitschke was born Dec. 18, 1912, near Jud, the son of Gotlieb and Christine (Fregien) Nitschke. He farmed with his brother. He married Helen Gerdes on Nov. 23, 1947. They bought a farm southwest of Jud, where he farmed until retiring. He was a supervisor of Raney Township Board for 15 years, treasurer of Raney School Board for nine years and later served on the Jud School Board. He was a charter member of the Jud Lions Club. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council for many years and also served as church treasurer.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Wayne and Robin (Adeline), both Jud; a daughter, Mylene (Don Jr.) Lee, Jamestown; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Nitschke, Jud; two granddaughters, a great-grandson, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Norman; and six brothers and sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Bryce Tahran officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Alvin Nitschke, 80, of Fargo, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at his home in Fargo.

Alvin was born on February 4, 1922 in Ashley, ND, the son of Edward and Christina (Sperle) Nitschke. During his working career, he worked as a general laborer in Minneapolis, MN, Seattle and Spokane, WA, and various farms in the Ashley and Oaks area. He retired in Fargo in 1987, where he lived until the time of his death.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Christina Nitschke; and two brothers, Elmer and Eddie Nitschke.

Alvin is survived by two brothers; Matt (Esther) Nitschke of West Fargo, ND, and Arthur (Verna) Nitschke of Fargo, ND; a sister, Ida (Albert) Treftz, of Aberdeen, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: One hour before services at Hanson-Runsvold.
Funeral: 2 PM, Saturday, May 18th, 2002 at Hanson-Runsvold, Fargo.

Anna Nitschke, 91, Ashley, N.D., died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Ashley Nursing Home, Ashley.

Anna C. Fehling was born June 18, 1911, near Kulm, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Baszler) Fehling. She grew up in the Kulm and Merricourt, N.D., area and attended country school. She worked for many area farm families. She married John Nitschke on March 14, 1932, in Ellendale, N.D. They rented various farms east of Ashley. They later purchased a farm 14 miles east of Ashley. They raised small grains and beef cattle. He died May 21, 1959. She continued to live on the farm until 1962. She married John Quaschnick on July 4, 1962. He died July 13, 1985. She moved to Ashley and lived at Harmony Homes. In the spring of 1997, she entered Ashley Nursing Home. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, and a former member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. She enjoyed crocheting, singing and playing the organ.

She is survived by four daughters, Mabel (Herbert) Nitschke, Fredonia, N.D., Ida (Wilmer) Gehring, Aberdeen, S.D., Viola (Gerald) Goettle, Ashley, and Betty Lou (Anthony) Schiley, Bristol, S.D.; two sons, Harry (Delila) Nitschke, Ashley, and Melvin (Betty) Nitschke, Vancouver, Wash.; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two sons in infancy, three brothers and six sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with the Rev. Jeff Giles officiating. Arrangements by Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.
Visitation: two hours before the service at the church.
Burial: Peace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ashley.

The funeral for Annetta Nitschke, 58, Jud, N.D., will be at 11 Monday in Trinity United Church of Christ, Jud. She died Wednesday, June 5, 1996.

Annetta Presler was born Oct. 21, 1937, near Gackle, N.D. She moved with her parents to Jud in 1951, where she attended school. She graduated from Jud High School in 1955. She then attended Ellendale (N.D.) Normal School. She taught school in Fredonia, N.D., for a year, and in Ray Township for two years. On Oct. 5, 1957, she married Sam Nitschke in Fredonia. They lived near Jud where she worked at the Jud Cafe and Supermarket.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Blane (Sherry) and Blake (Hope), both Jud; two daughters, Dawn (Bryce) Toay, Jud, Dulcie (Tim) Hoff, Moorhead; ...

Christian Nitschke, retired farmer from Fredonia, died Tuesday, November 10, 1959, in the Wishek Community hospital after an illness of eight months. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 16, 1959, in the Martin Luther Lutheran church of Fredonia with the Rev. E. Theilen officiating. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran cemetery of Kulm.  Pallbearers were Edwin Hildebrand, Walter Wittmeyer, Edgar Wohl, Jake Iszler, Albert Hildebrand and Roland Becker.  Nickish Funeral home of Wishek was in charge.

Christ Nitschke was born on a farm 9 miles southeast of Ashley on November 15, 1885, to Christoph and Rosina (Mertz) Nitschke.  In 1910 he homesteaded on a farm 5 miles southeast of Ashley.  In 1919 he moved to a farm 3 miles northeast of Fredonia.   In 1948 he retired and moved into Fredonia.  He married Louise Hildebrand on July 7, 1910, at St. Jacob's Lutheran church.  Four sons and seven daughters were born to this marriage.  Mrs. Nitschke preceded her husband in death.  He was a member of the Martin Luther Lutheran church of Fredonia and had been a deacon of the Zion Lutheran church of Kulm at various times.

He is survived by the following children; Jacob Nitschke of Indianapolis, Indiana; William and Fred Nitschke of Fredonia; Mrs. Charles (Anna) Nellis of Stockton, California; Mrs. Frank (Lavina) Coleman of Edmonds, Washington; Mrs. Art (Loraine) George of Edmonds, Washington; Mrs. Lorene (Elsie) Ketterling of Renton, Washington; Mrs. Norbert (Helen) Gutschmidt of Windsor; Mrs. A. (Leona) Schlenz and Mrs. LeRoy (Jeanette) Oelke, both of Fredonia.  Two sisters: Mrs. Jacob Hildebrand of Lodi, California and Mrs. Christ Hildebrand of Ashley; a brother, Gottlieb Nitschke, of Lodi, California and 24 grandchildren.

Evelyn Nitschke, 94, Jamestown, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown.

Evelyn Plott was born May 9, 1913, in Alfred, N.D., the daughter of James and Josephine (Udelhoben) Plott. She was raised on the farm in Alfred. She moved with her parents to Jud, N.D., where she graduated from Jud High School. She attended one year at Ellendale (N.D.) Normal School in 1934. She married Simon Sjostrom on June 28, 1936. They farmed in the Jud area before moving to a farm near Edgeley, N.D., in 1938. They moved into Edgeley in 1944 where she worked at the coffee shop. In 1956, she moved to Jamestown and worked at the North Dakota State Hospital until she retired in 1968. She married Gust Nitschke in September 1962. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles and crocheting.

She is survived by two sons, Lloyd (Alida) Sjostrom and Lyle (Evelyn) Sjostrom, both Jamestown; a daughter, Gladys Fercho, Jamestown; two sisters, Dorothy Katrum, Rockford, Ill., and Luella Triepke, Peru, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, three sisters and a grandchild.

Fred Nitschke, 81, Jamestown, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Jamestown Hospital.

Mr. Nitschke was born Oct. 5, 1921, near Fredonia, N.D., the son of Christian and Louisa (Hildebrand) Nitschke. He received his education in rural Fredonia schools. He married Adeline Miller on Feb. 9, 1947, in Fredonia. They farmed northeast of Fredonia. In 1960 they moved to Jamestown. He worked for Peterson-Biddick Creamery for a short time. He was employed with the Jamestown Street Department until retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, F.O.E. Eagles and B.P.O.E. Elks, both Jamestown. He enjoyed fishing and watching sports.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Linda (Robert) Todd, Jamestown, and Monica Syron, Federal Way, Wash.; four sisters, Lorraine (Art) George, Edmonds, Wash., Leone (Art) Schlenz, Jamestown, Elsie (Lawrence) Ketterling, Renton, Wash., and Jeanette (LeRoy) Oelke, Fredonia; a grandson and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bill, Jake and Art; and three sisters, Ann, Lavina and Helen.

Mrs Jacob Nitschke Of Alfred Dies

Mrs. Jacob Nitschke [Frederika], Alfred, died at her home Monday after being in poor health for some time.

Mrs. Nitschke was born in South Russia, November 19, 1880. She attended school in her native land. Miss Reinhardt and Mr. Nitschke were married February 23, 1899 and lived in a Russia until coming to the Jud community in 1903.  They lived on a farm there until 1919 when they began farming near Alfred and in 1932 retired and moved into Alfred.

Survivors are her husband and the following sons and daughter; Mrs. Gottfried Rempke [Rempfer], Mrs. David Schlenker Jr., Jud, Mrs. Harry DeWitt, Mrs. Jacob Madche and Otto, Alfred; Emil, Riperia, Wash.; Mrs. Harold Haseler and Jacob Jr., Marion; 27 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Rev. John Reimke, Gackle, will be in charge of funeral services to be held at the Alfred church Sunday.

Herbert L. Nitschke, son of John E. and Emilia (Schaffer) Nitschke, was born Nov. 6, 1926 southeast of Lehr on the family farm. He started country school and then moved with his family to a farm 20 miles northeast of Ashley. He worked on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Mabel L. Nitschke on Oct. 19, 1952 at Ashley.

Funeral service for Herbert L. Nitschke, 76, of Fredonia was Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD.

Herbert L. Nitschke, son of John E. and Emilia (Schaffer) Nitschke was born Nov. 6, 1926, southeast of Lehr, ND on the family farm. He started country school and then moved with his family to a farm 20 miles northeast of Ashley. He worked on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Mabel L. Nitschke Oct. 19, 1952, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. They purchased the family farm in 1960. They were general farmers raising small grains and cattle. He had great pride in his cattle. They retired in 1992. They remained on the farm and rented out their land.  Herbert kept busy helping his renters, family and friends, which he always enjoyed.  Herbert enjoyed fishing and especially with his grandchildren. He liked woodworking and any handy work.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley where he had been a past greeter and usher.

Survivors include his wife of Fredonia, one daughter, Delilah (Tim) Heil of Lemmon, SD, two sisters, Gladys (Harold) Blumhardt of Ashley and Delores (Richard) Hoff of Eureka and two grandsons, Tyler Heil and Brandon Heil.

His parents and a brother, Alvin, preceded him in death.

Honorary casketbearers were Johnny Nitschke, Tyler Heil and Brandon Heil.

Casketbearers were Sidney Meidinger of Fredonia, Curtis Bendewald of Ashley, Gerald Hoff of Washburn, ND, Scottie Hoff of Eureka, Mark Bentz of Artas, SD and Jay Wik of Fergus Falls, MN.

The organist was Steve Glaesmann and special music was performed by the Zion Lutheran Men’s Quartet.

Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, ND, was in charge of arrangements.

Ida Henne was born Oct. 25, 1917, near Alfred, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. On Oct. 9, 1945, she married Solomon Nitschke in Aberdeen, S.D. They farmed near Jud, N.D., until 1978, when they moved into Jud. He died in 1988. She moved to Jamestown in 1994, and entered Hi-Acres Manor four months ago. Leonard Nitschke, 85, Jud, N.D., died Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Veteran’s Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Nitschke was born March 7, 1921, at the homestead farm one and a half miles north of Jud, the son of Mathias and Katherina (Lippert) Nitschke. He attended Jud Elementary School, and worked on the family farm. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 7, 1942. He served with the 602nd Field Pack Artillery during World War II. He also served in the Aleutian Islands, Italy, France and Germany. He was wounded in Italy and received the Purple Heart. He was discharged Sept. 29, 1945. He married Viola Koenig on Oct. 19, 1947, in Alfred, N.D. They lived and farmed farm west of Jud until 1981, when they retired.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Harvey (Patty), Fargo, and Milo (Martha), San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Edwin (Luella), Jamestown; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.

Services: 1 p.m. Sunday, Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rev. Bryce Tahran officiating.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before the service at the funeral home. Arrangements by Haut Funeral Homes, Jamestown.

Mr. Nitschke was born March 7, 1908, near Alfred, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. On Oct. 13, 1927, he married Emma Klundt in Alfred, where they farmed. In 1956 they moved to Roseburg, Ore., where he worked at Umpqua Dairy. In 1958 they returned to Jamestown, where he worked at Haybusters and Stutsman County Implement. He also worked as a custodian at Roosevelt School, Jamestown. He retired in 1982. Sam Nitschke, 89, Jud, died Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown. Sam Nitschke was born May 20, 1916 on the family farm 1/4 mile south of Jud, ND to John and Margaret (Hummel) Nitschke. Sam graduated from Jud High School in 1936. He joined the CCC in 1937 and held several different jobs and was discharged as Mess Sergeant two years later. He then went to Dayton, OR., and worked for Denny McDougal in a fruit market for two years. In 1941, he joined the ND National Guard 164 Infantry. They were the first unit to see combat at Guadalcanal.  Sam was wounded in combat Nov. 27, 1942 and was sent to a New Zealand Hospital.  He recuperated in several hospitals Caldenia, Australia, and the Fiji Islands. He was discharged in Sept. of 1943 from McClesky General Hospital, Temple, Texas. He earned the American Defense Ribbon, Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation.

He joined the LaMoure VFW 3364 of which he served as Commander for three terms. He was also active on the LaMoure County draft board for five years. He was a member of the volunteer Jud Fire Department, Jud Area Betterment Board, Jud Lions, Jud Supermarket and the American Legion Post of Alfred, ND. He also served on the Bluebird Township for thirty-five years, Jud UCC Board for twenty-eight years and the cemetery board.

In 1957, Sam married Annetta Presler where they farmed for thirty-nine years on the family farm just south of Jud. In later years, Sam and Annetta enjoyed traveling the U.S. and meeting new people until the death of Annetta in June 1996. Sam continued to be active in the community and church until December of 1996 when he entered the Gackle Care Center. He resided there until fall of 1997 when he entered Central Dakota Village in Jamestown, ND. A few of Sam’s favorite past times were talking with people, co-driving a vehicle with George Nitschke, spending time with family and friends, enjoying the grandchildren and a love for music, especially fund raising for the Lion’s club by putting on talent shows.

He is survived by two sons, Blane (Sherry), Jud, Blake (Hope), Jud; two daughters, Dawn (Bryce) Toay, Jud, Dulcie (Tim) Hoff, Moorhead, MN; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Clara Nitschke, Jamestown, Ella (Floyd) Pfaff, Jud and Ruth Mettler, Ellensburg, WA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers and one sister.  

Funeral services: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Trinity United Church of Christ, Jud, with Pastor Barbara Murray, officiating.
Visitation: Monday, June 20 from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Jud United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Wayne Nitschke, 56, Jud, N.D., died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown, after a long illness.

Mr. Nitschke was born Sept. 15, 1949, in Jamestown, the son of Alex and Helen (Gerdes) Nitschke. He graduated from Jud High School in 1968. He attended Wyoming Tech from 1968-1969. He served in the National Guard from 1971-1977. He worked construction in Nevada for a short time. He was a farm laborer.  He was a member of St. Paul ’s Lutheran Church, Jud, Jud Rural Fire Department and American Legion Post 295, Alfred, N.D., for 33 years. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, riding horse and helping others.

He is survived by his mother, Jud; a brother, Robin (Adeline), Jud; a sister, Mylene (Don Jr.) Lee, Jamestown; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Nitschke, Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father and a brother, Norman.  

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jud High School gym, Jud, with the Rev. Bryce Tahran officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Friday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Jud Lutheran Cemetery, Jud.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, August 29, 1954, in the Jud Trinity Congregational church for Mrs. Christof Nitschke, 76, who died at her home in Jud on Wednesday evening, 25 August 1954.  Rev. Martin Grosz of Gackle officiated.  Pallbearers were Harry and Rueben Schlenker, Kenneth and Sam Nitschke all of Jud, Ray Busch of Cuba and Hugh Butrick of Kulm.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Wilhelmina Nitschke was born in South Russia on February 2, 1878, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Nitschke.  There she received her education and was married to Christof Nitschke.  Following their marriage in 1898, Mr. and Mrs. Nitschke came to the Untied States and settled near the townsite of the village of Jud which was built a few years later.  They lived in town for some years after retiring from active farm life.  After Mr. Nitschke died in 1941, Mrs. Nitschke retutned to the farm to make her home with her children.  She had been in ill health for some months preceding her death and had recently been hospitalized in Jamestown.

She is survived by three daughter, Johanna at home, Mrs. John Schlenker (Mary) of Jud and Mrs. Robert Herman (Margaret) of Kulm; three sons, Christof, George and Edward at home; a brother, Gottlieb Nitschke of Jud; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  One son died in infancy.

Ruby Noble, 71, Lodi, Calif., died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Lodi Memorial Hospital, Lodi.

Ruby Jean Lang was born March 5, 1933, in Alfred, N.D., the daughter of Gust S. and Lydia (Reuer) Lang. She attended school at Alfred and Gackle, N.D. She married Jerry J. Noble Sr. on Jan. 10, 1952, in Jamestown. They lived in Jamestown and later moved to Lodi. She was a vocational nurse.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Sheri Mower, Lodi; two sons, Jerry Jr. and Lonny, both Lodi; a sister, Ella Strusis, Bullhead City, Ariz.; and a brother, Burnett "Joe," Alfred.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Irene Krause.

Graveside service: arrangements pending.

Tillie Noyes, 91, Jamestown, N.D., died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Central Dakota Village in Jamestown, N.D.

Tillie [Otilda] Rivinius was born April 20, 1911 in Tanner Township, near Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Conrad and Katherina (Grenz) Rivinius. She grew up east of Streeter and moved with her family to Streeter in 1920, where she received her education.

Tillie married Edward Lang in 1928. They farmed south of Streeter until his health failed and they moved to Streeter. He died in February of 1946. Tillie drove school bus and was a cook for a restaurant in Streeter. In 1958, she moved her family to Jamestown where she worked as a cook for the Gladstone Hotel. In 1960, she was honored to prepare and serve a steak to John F. Kennedy while he stayed at the Gladstone Hotel. Tillie married Wayne W. Noyes on August 16, 1961 in Winnemucca, NV. They lived in Jamestown, later moving to Mandan where she was a daycare provider. In 1980, they returned to Jamestown. He died on December 23, 1996. In 1997 she moved to Rock of Ages and later moved to Central Dakota Village in 2002. She loved cooking and baking for her family, enjoyed crafts, and had a great sense of humor. She attended Temple Baptist Church.

Tillie is survived by a son, Leroy (Helen) Lang, of Jamestown, N.D.; one daughter, Linda (Lyle) Leichtnam, of Minot, N.D.; 4 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Schwartzwalter, of Bloomington, MN; Alice (Alvin) Dewald, of Streeter, N.D.; a step son, Ron (Dianne) Noyes; and a step daughter, Renee (David) Wehler, of Jamestown, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a granddaughter, Sheila Wahl; two brothers, Art & Gust Rivinius; and a sister Mathilda Enzminger.

Merritt (Swede) Ogren, age 88 of Edgeley, ND, died Friday, June 30 at MeritCare hospital, Fargo, ND.

Merritt O. Ogren the son of Hugo A. and Katherine E. (Davidson) Ogren was born April 24, 1918 in Swede Township near Kulm, N.D.

He grew up and attended school in Swede Township. He attended Edgeley High School where he participated and lettered in football and basketball.

After high school he joined the Army National Guard. In 1941 his unit was activated into the army. His military service was with the 164th Infantry in the Pacific Theater in Australia, New Caledonia, Fiji, Guadalcanal and Bougainville.

He returned to Edgeley in December, 1944. He married Marguerite Herzer on December 10, 1944 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley, ND. They lived on Army bases in Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi until his discharge from the army in October of 1945.

They settled in Edgeley, where Merritt worked at the Edgeley Creamery first as a bulk milk driver, then as a butter maker. After the creamery closed its doors, Merritt became a local milk distributor for his own business, the Edgeley Dairy Co. His milk route included Ellendale, Merricourt, Monango, Edgeley, Nortonville, Jud and farms in between.

He retired from business in 1982. After retirement from the dairy business, he and Marguerite served as custodians for Wesley United Methodist Church. They were also caretakers for Mount Hope Cemetery.

His service to the Edgeley community included: City Councilman, City Magistrate and Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees for the church. He was a long time member of the Edgeley Lions Club. He was Boy Scout troop leader and a member of the Boy Scout Order of Arrow. He was also on the Committee for Youth Baseball and was a P.T.A. president. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and the 164th Infantry Association.

He played N.D. amateur baseball for Swede Township, Kulm and Edgeley teams. After retiring as an active player, he was manager for the Edgeley team. He umpired local soft ball games and state tournament baseball games. He was inducted into the N.D. Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976 and the N.D. American Legion Baseball Hall of fame in 1998.

Merritt was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed attending sports events of all kinds. He worked on the chain line for local high school football games for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor picnics with family. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He especially enjoyed attending activities involving his granddaughters.

Merritt is survived by his wife, children Corbley (Carol) Ogren, Linton, ND, Meredith (Elliott) Meidinger, Jamestown, ND, and Bradley (Denise) Ogren, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister, LaVerne (Floyd) Fredenburg, Edgeley, ND; four granddaughters, Jami (Jared) Falk, Argusville, ND, Jenesa (Sheldon) Feist, Washburn, ND Julianna Ogren, Jamestown and Jocelyn Meidinger, Jamestown; and two great-grandsons, Aden and Austin Falk, Argusville, ND.

Merritt was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Orville and two sisters, Bernice Nast and Doris West.

Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley, ND.
Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 4th at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley, ND.
Visitation: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley, ND and at the church for 1 hour prior to services on Wednesday.
Interment: Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.

Edna A. Okerlund, 77, Jamestown, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.

Edna Raile was born Dec. 16, 1924, in Wishek, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Christina (Martell) Raile. She grew up and graduated from Wishek High School. She attended Dakota Business College, Fargo, N.D. She worked for the Veteran's Administration in Fargo, later working for the Bank of North Dakota. She married Arthur L. Okerlund on Dec. 9, 1944, in Fargo. They lived in Detroit, Mich., for a year. They moved to Wishek, where he worked for Montana Dakota Utilities. In August 1949, they were transferred to Ellendale, N.D. On May 5, 1952, they moved to Kulm, N.D., where they lived for many years. She worked for the Kulm Messenger. She was office manager for 20 years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They moved to Jamestown in 1993. He died Sept. 15, 2000. She served as secretary and a member of Kulm School Board. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kulm, and Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, serving on the quilting committee.

She is survived by three sons, Leon (Florine), Jamestown, Dick (Cathy), Bismarck, N.D., and Tim (Connie), Dickinson, N.D.; a daughter, Cheryl (Gail) Zimmerman, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Linda (Floyd) Weisser, Bismarck, and Erna Frank, Wishek; two brothers, Alvin Raile, Wishek, and Gideon (Lucille) Raile, Bismarck; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a great grand-daughter, Ashley, eight brothers and sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Robert Leiste officiating.

Prayer service: 8 p.m. Wednesday, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

Frances Oleson, 96, Jamestown, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.

Frances Oleson was born Feb. 2, 1909, at Kingsbury County, South Dakota, the daughter of Ole James and Christine (Nelson) Oleson. She moved with her family to Cleveland, N.D., where she attended Sinclair Township School and Gackle (N.D.) High School, graduating in 1926. She attended Valley City (N.D.) State Teacher’s College where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in Cleveland, Wilton, N.D., Edgeley, N.D., and Bismarck, N.D. She retired in 1970 and moved to Jamestown. She was a volunteer at the North Dakota State Hospital and taught for the Stutsman County Expanded Nutrition Program. She was a member of North Dakota Retired Teacher’s Association and Wild Rose Homemakers Club of Cleveland. She enjoyed reading, handwork, crafts and traveling.

She is survived by three brothers, Orville, Hatton, N.D., Christen (Margaret), Modesto, Calif., and Lynn, Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Olga; two brothers, Milton and Marvin; and twin infant siblings.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Cleveland United Methodist Church, Cleveland.
Visitation: noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Lynn Edward Oleson, 88, Cleveland, North Dakota died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown, ND.

Mr. Oleson was born April 6, 1918 at a farm south of Cleveland, the son of Ole James and Christine (Nelson) Oleson. He received his education at Sinclair Township School and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1935. He lived all his life on the same farm where he was born. Lynn was a lifetime farmer and also worked for the ASC office checking grain bins.

He served on the following boards: Stutsman County Rural Water, Sinclair Township, Gackle Coop Elevator, Gackle Coop Oil Company and Medina Credit Union.

Lynn is survived by two brothers: Orville Oleson, Hatton, ND and Christen (Margaret) Oleson, Modesto, CA; two nephews: Orlo (Shirley) Sund, Cleveland, ND and James (Nanci) Oleson, McMinnville, OR; six nieces: Mona Hintzman, Minneapolis, MN, Lois (Robert) Grabinger, Jamestown, Chloe (Andy) Anderson, Sheridan, WY, Kristann (Garrett) Burkhardt, Valley Center, KS, Cynthia (Bill) Voller, Hatton, ND and Sally Oleson, Merced, CA; 23 great nieces and nephews; 29 great-great nieces and nephews; 6 great-great-great nieces and nephews and a special friend, Terry Suedel, Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Olga Sund and Frances Oleson, two brothers, Milton and Marvin and twin infant siblings, one nephew, one niece, one great-great niece.

Memorial Service: 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 12, 2006 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel in Jamestown with Chaplain David Fisher officiating.
Family will receive guests from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Friday, August 11, 2006 at the Eddy Funeral Home.

STERLING -- Alice Olson, 67, Sterling, died Dec. 22, 2004, as a result of a car accident east of Steele. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jo Pfennig officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Steele Chapel and will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Alice was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Streeter on the family farm, the daughter of John and Christina (Albright) Schumaker. Alice was raised in Steele, where she graduated from high school. She then graduated from Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.

Alice married James Olson in 1960 in Driscoll. Alice lived on the family farm near Sterling. She continued nursing at the Golden Manor Nursing Home, where she later became the Director of Nursing. She then began home healthcare work with St. Alexius Medical Center and traveled extensively throughout the area caring for others.

Alice was an accomplished oil painter and she enjoyed baking. She was involved in her church, Grace Lutheran Church in Driscoll, and was a member of the Homemakers, 30's Club, and the Red Hat Society. She loved flowers, gardening and especially being with people.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and LeAnn Olson, Beijing, China, and Grant and Gabrielle Olson, Willmar, Minn.; her grandchildren, Janet, Connor and Hannah; her sister, Tillie Dewald, Gackle; and her beloved companion, Ray Fischer, Steele.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Alvin, Harry, Reuben and Albert Schumaker; and her sister, Viola Lang.

Emelia "Peggy" Ironside Olson, 94, Jamestown, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at her home.

Emelia Perman was born April 7, 1908, in Logan County, North Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Ketterling) Perman. She grew up and attended school in Logan County. She attended Murphy's Shorthand School for nine months. She was employed at First National Bank in Wishek, Parshall and Harvey, N.D. She worked as a teller at Ottertail Power Company in Rugby, N.D., for several years. She married Lawrence Howard Ironside on Oct. 7, 1929, in Jamestown. They later moved to Oakes, N.D., where he was district manager of Ottertail Power Company. After he retired from Ottertail, she assisted him with his photography business. He died July 11, 1951. She worked at Wells Drug, Oakes, for two years before moving to Jamestown. She worked at First National Bank in Jamestown for 20 years, where for the last five years she did promotional work. She married Robert K. Olson on Jan. 1, 1979, in Jamestown. He died July 30, 1994. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and Women of Grace, both Jamestown.

She is survived by a daughter, Judyth Anne Bergan, Minneapolis, Minn.; three stepsons, Col. Jan B. (Linda) Olson, Arlington, Va., Steve (Sharon) Olson, Muskego, Wis., and Kevin (Bonnie) Olson, Bismarck, N.D.; a stepdaughter, Mary Beth Burns, Fargo, N.D.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, five brothers and four sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Grace Episcopal Church, Jamestown, with the Revs. J. Bartley Davis and Eustis Cowardin officiating.
Visitation: 1-9 p.m. Tuesday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Laurie Fay Olson, 34, Valley City, died Thurs., Sept. 25, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.

Laurie Olson was born November 18, 1968 at Gackle, the daughter of Jim and Elaine (Williams) Olson. She grew up on the family farm in Logan County. She attended school for a short time at Streeter, completing her education at the Anne Carlson Center in Jamestown. In 1990 she moved to the Open Door Center in Valley City. Despite being born with Cerebral Palsy, she had a magnetic personality.

Leon E. Olson, 78, Jamestown, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown, under the care of hospice.

Mr. Olson was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Streeter, N.D., the son of John and Caroline (Rue) Olson. He grew up and attended country school in Streeter. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Germany. He returned to North Dakota after his discharge and married Leona Handel on Oct. 10, 1946, in Jamestown. They lived in Jamestown where he was employed by Lindberg Builders until he retired in 1987. He was an active member of Jamestown VFW Post 760 for 43 years, holding various offices including post commander for two terms, District 7 poppy chairman for 22 years, clubroom committee member, Military Order of Cooties and VFW Color Guard for 27 years. He was also an active member of Pup Tent 6, serving twice as Pup Tent 6 Seam Squirrel commander. He enjoyed fishing, selling poppies and building bird houses.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Dennis (Sandy), Seattle, Wash., Alton (Audrey), Gillette, Wyo., and Curtis (Elizabeth), Jamestown; two daughters, Beverly (Robert) Werner, Dallas, Texas, and Elaine (Andy) Brown, East Grand Forks, Minn.; three sisters, Crystal Lehrke, Hazel Stalock and Lilia Larson; three brothers, Vernon, Orville and Orlin; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown, with the Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating.

Eddie Opp, 80, Gackle, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown.

Mr. Opp was born Sept. 5, 1921, near Streeter, N.D., the son of George Opp and Elizabeth (Himmerich) Opp. He grew up there and received his elementary education at the local rural school. He married Hulda Deutscher in October 1946 at Gackle. They lived in Gackle, where he worked for Logan County and later the Gackle Creamery and the Deep Rock Station. He married Alma Elhard on July 11, 1973, at Gackle. They lived in Gackle, where he worked for Logan County. In 1991 he retired, and he entered Hi-Acres Manor in October 2000. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, and the Gackle Lions Club, and an honorary member of the Gackle Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Alma; a son, Garry (Kay), Oakes, N.D.; a daughter, Carla (Gary) Faulhauber, Dallas, Texas; five stepdaughters, Judy Thomas, Joliet, Ill., Diane Walker and Carol Muller, both Gackle, and Donna (Leon) Phillips and Peggy (Conrad) Gordon, both Lockport, Ill.; two stepsons, Kenny (Shar) Gumke, Jamestown, and Wayne (Louanne) Gumke, Franktown, Colo.; a sister, Frieda Rau, Streeter; four brothers, Art, Medina, N.D., Benny, Streeter, Reinhold, Napoleon, N.D., and August, Glendive, Mont.; 24 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a son, Charles; a brother, a sister and a grandson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. David Winterfeldt officiating.

Opp Infant Dies Suddenly

Shell Allen Opp, 11 1/2 month old infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Opp, formerly of Gackle, now of Ellendale, North Dakota died suddenly enroute to the Ellendale Hospital Sunday afternoon, May 1, 1966, following a short illness.

He was born May 18, 1965 in Jamestown, North Dakota.

Surviving are his parents, Gary Opp and Kay (Entzminger) Opp, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Opp, Gackle, N. D., Mr. and Mrs. Bernhardt Entzminger, Gackle, N. D., his great grandmother, Mrs. Mathilda Deutscher, Gackle, North Dakota.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. May 5, 1966 at the Grace Baptist Church in Gackle with Rev. Warren Reich, Jamestown, North Dakota officiating. Burial will be in the Gackle Cemetery. The body is at the Haut Funeral Home in Gackle until taken to the church at noon on Thursday.

Lillian Orman, 93, Harvey, N.D., died Sunday Feb. 20, 2005, at St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey.

Lillian Kranzler was born March 12, 1911, on a farm northeast of Hosmer, S.D., the daughter of Gottlieb G. and Katherine (Dockter) Kranzler. She was employed by Dr. Alway, Aberdeen, S.D., for several years. She married Adolph Orman on June 6, 1937, at the family farmstead in South Dakota. They lived at Yankton (S.D.) College, while he finished theological training. They ministered to congregations in Medina, Elgin, Harvey, Wishek, Streeter, Hazen, Beulah and Zap, all North Dakota. They also served churches in Treynor, Iowa, Hastings, Neb., Crook, Colo., and Wapeto, Wash. He died Dec. 30, 1988. She moved to Harvey in 2001. She was a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher. She sang in church choirs and was a member of ladies aid groups. She enjoyed craft projects, crocheting, quilting, reading, gardening, canning, cooking and baking.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Lee) Nordlie, Harvey, and LaRue "Laura" (Larry) Sommer, Hazen, N.D.; a son-in-law, Sylvester Schindler, Lewistown, Mont.; two sisters, Ramona Pfieff, Lodi, Calif., and Flora Mehlhoff, Miller, S.D.; two brothers, Walter, Eureka, S.D., and Milton, Salina, Kan.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Judy Schindler; four sisters, Esther Heyd, Ida Urban, Nora Peggy Wilson and Ruth Job; and a brother, Jacob.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Wesley United Methodist Church, Harvey.
Visitation: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Arthur F. Ost, 80, Kulm, N.D., died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in his home.

Mr. Ost was born May 18, 1918, near Fredonia, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. On Nov. 30, 1941, he married Pauline Schock near Fredonia. They farmed on his family's farm near Fredonia for 50 years.

They also raised Hereford cattle for breeding stock. They retired to Kulm in 1989. He is survived by his wife; two sons, James (Diana), Darwin (Elaine), both Fredonia; a daughter, Bernice Johnson, Salem, Ore.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Betty Lou Ost, 71, Bismarck, died September 9, 2006, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck with Rev. Art Scanson officiating.
Visitation will be held from noon-9:00 PM, Tuesday and 9AM-9PM Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM, Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Jamestown, ND.

Betty Lou Ost was born on August 21, 1935, on her parents, Jacob and Christina Job family farm near Jud, ND. Here she was raised and received her education at the Glenmore Consolidated School.

Betty married Roger Ost on December 16, 1951, at Jud, ND. They farmed on several farms in Lamoure County before settling on the family farm; which they purchased from her parents and where they raised their six children.

Betty kept busy in the early years milking cows, raising chickens and gardening. She was well-known in the communities of Jud and Nortonville for her cooking and bread making skills. Her children were always treated with a homemade angel food cake on their birthdays; which she was proud to have taught herself to make.

Betty moved to Bismarck in 1979 and became a very dedicated employee of St. Alexius Medical Center. She was employed there until the time of her death. In her 27 years of employment, Betty rarely used a sick day. In December of 2005, Betty received the St. Alexius Higher Standard Award as proof of her dedication and commitment. Throughout the Medical Center, Betty was known for her spunk and sense of humor. She loved to joke with everyone. Betty lived her life of great work ethics and common sense values that extended into all of her friendships. These friendships kept continuous flowers on her dining room table from October 2005 until the time of her death. These friendships also took the time to visit Betty in her home and brightened her days.

Betty’s greatest joy in life was raising her children. Her greatest gift was the love and time she spent with family. Betty was very proud of each of her children and their accomplishments in life.

In the later years she much enjoyed the time she spent with each of her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Ellen Marie (Dale) Schafer, Paula Jean Bullinger and Christa Lea (Scott) Culver all of Bismarck, ND, and Kathy Ann (Rick) Steele of Hunter, ND; her sons, Jeffrey "Jeff" Lloyd and fiancé Bonnie Phillips of Nortonville, ND, and Owen Harold (Marsha) of Jamestown, ND; her sisters, Elsie (Walter) Dallmann of The Dalles, OR, Edna (Ronald) Smith of Prineville, OR, and Lillian (Raymond) Skattum of Adrian, ND; her brothers, Ernest of Great Falls, MT. Walter "Bud" (Betty) of Windsor, ND, and Donald (Carol) of Vancouver, WA; her grandchildren, Kalen Ost, Ashley Michael, Christopher Bullinger, David Bullinger, Alyssa Ost, Aryn Ost, Emily Ost, Leann Steele, Katie Steele, Chandra Steele, Jenn Culver and Kristi Culver all of whom reside in ND; her half-sisters, Katie (Ralph) of Hollingsworth Bumpass, VI and Eva (Richard) Mueller of Gackle, ND.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Viola (George) Roth; her three brothers, Elmer (Ruth Elhard), Harold "Junior" and Art; her half-brother, Ludwig (Maggie) and half-sister Ida (Gust) Oberlander. Betty will also be welcomed into heaven by Ellen’s seven precious Angels that God called home in their early stages of life; Jessica Marie Krueger, James Timothy Krueger, Jadon Norbert Krueger, Michael Roger Krueger, Nicole Betty Krueger, Marie Clara Schafer and Jerome Allan Schafer.

Our hearts were broken the day God called you home and our lives will never by the same. Thank you for your love Mom, we will miss you.

Edmund Ost, 81, Kulm, N.D., died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Wishek Nursing Home, Wishek, N.D.

Mr. Ost was born May 21, 1921, near Fredonia, N.D., the son of Ben and Emma (Ruff) Ost. When he was 5 years old, his parents bought a farm near Guyson, N.D., a small town on the Soo Line Railroad Line between Fredonia and Lehr, N.D. He attended grade school at Lautt School District and graduated from Lehr High School. After graduating from Dakota Business College in Fargo, N.D., he worked for Reinhard Brothers in Fargo for a few years and then taught school in the Lautt School District for two years. He then became postmaster at the post office in Fredonia. He married Viola C. Dallman on May 26, 1961, in Fredonia. They lived in Fredonia until May 1984 when he retired after 34 years as postmaster, and they moved to Kulm. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Kulm, and served as a lay member to the annual conference for more than 30 years. He also served as church secretary and financial secretary. He was an avid gardener, growing produce, roses and other flowers. He kept weather records for the Kulm Messenger and precipitation records for the state of North Dakota. Due to health problems, he entered Wishek Nursing Home on Sept. 15, 2000.

He is survived by his wife; a brother, Oscar (Viola), Lehr; and two sisters, Edna Koenig, Kulm, and Elva (Wilbert) Gutschmidt, Gackle, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, United Methodist Church, Kulm, with the Rev. Dale Emery officiating.
Prayer service: 6 p.m. today, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Burial: Congregational Cemetery, Kulm.

Pauline Ost, 90, Jamestown, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Pauline Gumke was born March 6, 1913, southeast of Gackle, N.D., in Logan County, the daughter of Christian and Rebecca (Weispfenning) Gumke. She attended the local rural elementary school in Gackle. She grew up in the area. She married Albert Ost on Nov. 11, 1932, in Gackle. They farmed in the Fredonia, N.D., area for three years, and then moved into Fredonia where he operated a dray line and service station. In 1941, they moved to a farm 2 1/2 miles northeast of Nortonville, N.D. In 1955, they moved into Jamestown where she worked for a while at Woolworth’s. He died Nov. 26, 1981. She entered Central Dakota Village in June 2002. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown.

She is survived by two sons, Morris (Lorraine), Nortonville, and Larry (Carol), Saugus, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many stepgrand children and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Roger; five brothers; six sisters, and an infant great-granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Don Crippen officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Pauline Ost, 81, Kulm, N.D., died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Wishek Nursing Home, Wishek, N.D.

Pauline Schock was born March 8, 1920, on the family farm near Fredonia, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Carolina (Reuther) Schock. She grew up and attended school in the Fredonia area. She married Arthur Ost Nov. 30, 1941, at a rural church near Fredonia. They lived and farmed on the Ost Family farm for many years. They raised Registered Polled Hereford Cattle and were members of the American Polled Hereford Association. They retired from farming in 1989 and moved into Kulm. She enjoyed embroidering, raising flowers, gardening, raising chickens on the farm and serving for many years with the Kulm Congregational Ladies Aid.

She is survived by two sons, James (Diana) and Darwin (Elaine), both Fredonia; a daughter, Bernice Johnson, Salem, Ore.; a brother, Victor (Elizabeth) Schock, Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Mary Steinwandt, Kulm, Elvina Ulrich and Delores (Harold) Leistikow, all Lodi, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Kulm Congregational Church, Kulm, with the Rev. Bill Bradley officiating.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm, and one hour before the service at the church.

Mr. Ost was born June 22, 1929, in Fredonia, N.D., the son of Oscar Sr. and Pauline (Becker) Ost. He grew up and received his education in Fredonia. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Nov. 15, 1951, at Barstow, Calif. He served three years in the active reserve and three years in the inactive reserve and was discharged Nov. 14, 1959. He married Betty Batsch on June 12, 1968, in Jamestown. They lived in Jamestown where he worked for the Jamestown Parks & Recreation Department for 33 years as the golf course superintendent. He was a member of the First Congregational-United Church of Christ, Eagles, D.A.V. and American Legion of Jamestown.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Melany Hoque, Barstow, Pam Miles, Bremerton, Wash., and Lyndon Glover, Fountain Valley, Calif.; three brothers, Donald (Irene), Norwich, N.D., Willis (Arlene), Jamestown, and Jimmy (Rita), Ashley, N.D.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown, with the Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating.

Willis Ost, 69, Jamestown, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Wishek Hospital, Wishek, N.D.

Mr. Ost was born Feb. 19, 1935, on the family farm near Fredonia, N.D., the son of Oscar and Pauline (Becker) Ost. He was raised on the farm and attended rural school. Following his schooling, he worked on the family farm until 1974 when he moved to Jamestown where he worked for Evertts Construction (now Border States). He married Arlene Cox on Jan. 23, 1976, at Jamestown. He retired in 1992 due to ill health and entered Wishek Nursing Home in September 2004. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed playing pool and fishing.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Tim Ost, Jamestown; a stepson, Kelly (Caroline) Ruddy, Fargo, N.D.; two brothers, Donald (Irene) Norwich, N.D., and James (Rita) Ashley, N.D.; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Darrell, Roger and Wesley.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Doug Opp officiating.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

GACKLE -- Berdella Ova, 61, Gackle, died March 25, 2000, at her home near Gackle.

Berdella was born May 5, 1938 at Streeter, the daughter of Edward and Marie (Buck) Wentz. She attended school in Streeter and graduated from Streeter High School in 1957. She worked at White Drug and First Federal Savings & Loan in Jamestown. Berdella married Darrell Ova on Feb. 19, 1960, in Streeter, North Dakota. They farmed near Alfred. They moved to Gackle in the fall of 1996. Berdella enjoyed crocheting, cooking, traveling, entertaining guests and spending time with her children, grandchildren and meeting people. Berdella was a member of the Alfred Homemakers Club and the American Legion Auxiliary for 40 years.

Berdella is survived by her husband, Darrell Ova; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Glenn Otto, of Jamestown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Natalie, Alfred; Kenneth and Lynette, Jamestown; and Bryan and Corraine, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Gerald Ova, Buchanan; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Norma Wentz, Streeter; her mother, Marie Wentz, of Gackle; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at First Church of The Nazarene, Jamestown, with the Rev. Richard Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, where a prayer service will begin at 7 tonight.

Mervyn R. Ova, 78, Jamestown, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Ova was born June 5, 1926, in Jamestown, the son of Lloyd and Florence (Allen) Ova. He grew up in the Buchanan, N.D., area and attended school at the Hidden Township school and Buchanan. He entered the U.S. Army on March 20, 1945, at Fort Snelling, Minn., serving during WW II in Germany. He was discharged Oct. 10, 1946, in Fort Mead, Md. He returned to North Dakota and married Emily Job on Oct. 14, 1947, in Fessenden, N.D. They farmed all their lives in the Buchanan area. They retired in 1995 and moved to Jamestown. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed camping, fishing and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Mervyn "Jack" (Deb) and Cal, both Jamestown, and Dean (Linda), Pingree; two daughters, Barbara (Richard) Nysted, Carrington, N.D., and Patty (Dwight) Legge, Sanborn, N.D.; his mother, Jamestown; two brothers, Darrel, Gackle, N.D., and Gerald (Darlene), Buchanan; a sister, Joyce (Richard) Guthmiller, Jamestown; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Stanley.

Helen Overlander, 90, Mesa, Ariz., died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in Jamestown (N.D.) Hospital.

Helen Remboldt was born May 14, 1910, near Gackle, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. She married Theodore Speidel Aug. 16, 1936, in Gackle. They lived in Jamestown for a short time before moving to Gackle where she worked as a merchant. He died in 1961. She married Lee Overlander Feb. 8, 1975, in Jamestown. They lived in Gackle where she worked in the clothing business. She retired in 1976 and spent winters in Arizona. He died in 1991.

She is survived by a son, Ted (Bonnie) Speidel, Mesa; a sister, Lillian Mueller, Gackle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral: Thursday at 10:30 in Grace Baptist Church, Gackle.

Hermoine Palm, 82, Kulm, N.D., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Wishek (N.D.) Community Hospital.

Hermoine Rebecca Swenson was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Swede Township at the site known as Roy’s Park near Kulm, the daughter of Martin and Jennie (Norden) Swenson. She grew up and attended rural school in the Kulm area. She attended and graduated in 1939 from Aberdeen (S.D.) High School. She attended two years of business school in Aberdeen. She married Jim Weatherly on June 21, 1943, in Aberdeen. They lived in the Aberdeen area until they moved to Kulm in 1944. They lived at various farms in Raney Township near Kulm until 1951, when they moved into Kulm and owned and operated the Kulm Cafe until they retired. He died Feb. 19, 1976. She moved to Moorhead, Minn., where she worked with her daughter at Peggy’s Pantry. She married Dell Palm on March 19, 1986, in Arizona. They lived in the Kulm area and spent several winters in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband, Dell; two daughters, Judy (Robert) Smith, Fargo, N.D., and Margaret (Robert) Smith, Seminole, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Sharon (Arv) Holden, Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jim; and a grandchild.

Services: 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Kulm Baptist Church, Kulm, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.

Born April 2, 1935 in Napoleon, North Dakota. Age 68 years. A former longtime resident of Fremont for 28 years before moving to McKinleyville three months ago. Employed with the Department of Defense for 13 years and a former school teacher. She enjoyed crocheting, spending time with her grandchildren, and her chocolate chip pumpkin cookies were award winners. Irene was a member of CA Breathers Club and CA Society for Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and participated in the 2003 Lung Games, receiving a gold medal in the step machine event. She pioneered the no-smoking laws in California. She made history when the 9th District Circuit Court of Appeals of California ruled in her favor that second-hand cigarette smoke was dangerous to the health of non-smokers. You will always be the wind beneath our wings. We love you.

Wilbur Warren PARVEY - Wilbur died peacefully and at rest Friday morning January 19th, 2001 in Olympia, WA.

At age 80, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Iris, and sisters Donna King of Vancouver, WA. and Lorraine Halpin of Redmond, WA.

Born on November 26th, 1920 in Gackle, North Dakota, Will moved to the Pacific Northwest in the late 30's. He served in the U.S. Army Air Service during WWII. He later settled in Seattle where he and Iris were married.

Will is survived by sisters Iona Kopetsky of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Jean Holden of Kirkland, WA., daughter Alice Jones of Olympia, WA., sons Richard Parvey of Issaquah, WA., James Parvey of Tacoma, WA., granddaughter Jessica Jones of Yelm, WA., Jerry, Quentin, Helen, Carol, Corrine, Russell, Don, Eileen, Casey and many other enduring friendships he established through his kindness, humor and devotion.

We will miss him everyday. Memorial Services will be held at the family home in Yelm on February 10th, 2001 at 2 p.m.

A member of the Retail Clerks Union who worked for Fred Meyer and Nite and Day Market before his retirement in 1982, Francis "Frank" Parvi died of cancer Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Vancouver. He was 79.

Mr. Parvi was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Gackle, N.D., and had lived in Vancouver for 74 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and enjoyed football, family, Finnish accordion music and history.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kathryn at home; one son, Douglas of Canby, Ore.; three daughters, Dian Lieberman and Jane Wilson, both of Brush Prairie, and Brenda McKay of Battle Ground; two sisters, Ellen O'Connor of Newcastle, Calif., and Sylvia Gary of Camas; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Frieda Patzer, 92, Jamestown, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Frieda Weixel was born Sept. 24, 1914, in Bloomenfield Township, northeast of Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Ludwig and Emelia (Weisenberger) Weixel. She grew up and attended area schools. She married Markus Patzer on June 21, 1936, at Streeter. They lived and farmed in Stutsman County. They later purchased a farm near Sydney, N.D., where they farmed until they moved to Jamestown in 1968. He died Sept. 18, 1976.

She is survived by a daughter, Darleen (Elgi) Toman, Baraboo, Wis.; three sons, Darrell (Marjorie), Jamestown, Donald (Sandra), Grand Island, Neb., and Gordon, Chicago, Ill.; five sisters, Edna Clark, Hulda Siegle, Martha Sund and Esther Remboldt, all Jamestown, and Johanna Brych, Bismarck, N.D.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter in infancy; her parents; three brothers, Ted, Raymond and Elmer; and two sisters, Ella Schnable and Gertrude Klose.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Eric Libby officiating.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, in the spring.

Lydia E. Pedersen, age 72, longtime resident of Buhl, died Saturday, February 9, 2002 in the Fairview University Medical Center- Mesabi.

She was born June 9, 1920 in Gackle, ND, the daughter of John W. and Mary Johannah Muonio. She was a graduate of Gackle High School, and was married to Peder Pedersen in Gackle on July 2, 1949. Lydia worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Old Apostle Lutheran Church of Gilbert, and was a member of the Buhl Sr. Citizens Center where she also served as . . .

Mrs. Elizabeth Perman was born January 9, 1883, in Niedorf, South Russia. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Martin Frey (nee Elizabeth Scheuffle). She was united in marriage with Fred Perman, whose parents were Fredrich Perman and Kathrine Weintz, on April 11, 1904, at Gackle, N.D. To this union were born 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. Two of the children passed away in infancy. Those surviving are: Elizabeth (Mrs. John Klinger), of Stockton, California; Edwin of San Francisco, California; Arthur, of San Francisco; Irene (Mrs. Don Bailey), Aberdeen, S. D. ; Gedion, of Wishek; and Dolly, of Lodi, California.

Mrs. Fred Perman came to America with her parents as a small child in 1885 and lived at Gackle, N.D., until she came to this community in 1914 with her husband. After they were married they lived in a sod house about twelve miles east of Wishek. They felt fortunate in having two horses and two cows. They also owned one claim of land. When harvesting time came relatives always helped each other.

In 1914 they moved to Wishek and bought a small home from John Dormair in which they lived for 2 ½ years. Later they moved into a house built by Mr. Perman and the Roehm brothers. This house remained the family residence until 1944 when they left Wishek to make their home in Lodi, California. On June 15, 1945, the family was broken when Mr. Perman suddenly passed away. Mrs. Perman still resides in Lodi.

Glen Perman, 71, Streeter, N.D., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Napoleon (N.D.) Care Center.

Mr. Perman was born Jan. 25, 1932, in Streeter, the son of Henry H. and Ruby (Brown) Perman. He grew up on the family farm south of Streeter and attended rural school. He married Esther Freier on June 12, 1952, at United Methodist Church, Streeter. They farmed with his parents until 1953 when they moved to Bismarck, N.D. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 25, 1956, and served during the Korean War. He was discharged Aug. 22, 1958. They then began farming in the Streeter area. In 1974 they moved to his parents’ farm south of Streeter. He entered Napoleon Care Center on June 27, 2001. He served on the Streeter School Board, Farmers Union Board and Linton KEM Electric Board. He was a member of the American Legion and United Methodist Church, Napoleon.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Troy (Peg), Streeter; a daughter, Gwen (Craig) Gillespie, Morris, Minn.; a brother, Wallace (Frances), Bismarck; a sister, Shyrl Perman, Portland, Ore.; five brothers-in-law, Eugene (Joyce) Freier, Medina, N.D., Lawrence (Corrine) Freier, Mercer, N.D., Lonnie (Sandy) Freier, Glyndon, Minn., Terry (Sara) Freier and Tom (Melinda) Freier, both Bismarck; a sister-in-law, Betty Freier, Bismarck; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Byron and James; and a sister, Patricia Dorr.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Ronn Wilke officiating.
Prayer Service: 7 p.m. today, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Burial: Perman family cemetery near Streeter.

Henry Perman Services Held

Henry H. Perman, 75, rural Streeter, died at Bismarck, N.D., Monday, October 10.

Mrs. [Mr.] Perman was born at Streeter May 31, 1891, and had attended business college in Fargo and an engineer training school at Austin, Minn. He returned to Streeter in 1916 to farm. He married Ruby Mae Brown at Napoleon, N.D., November 26, 1917.

He leaves his wife: two daughters, Mrs. George (Ozella) Borr [Dorr], Bakersfield, Calif., Shirley, Portland, Oregon; three sons, James, Napoleon, N.D., Wallace, Bismarck; Glenn, Streeter.

Three brothers, John, Billings, Mont., Jacob, Jamestown, N.D.; Andrew, Napoleon; Three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Klundt, Mrs. C. B. (Marie) Zimmerman and Mrs. Peggy Ironside, all Jamestown; 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The funeral service was held on Friday, October 14, 1966, at Hope United Church of Christ in Streeter with Rev. A Orman, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Gideon Kirschenmann played a program of organ music as friends and relatives came into and left the church. "Going Down the Valley" and "We'll Never Say Goodby" were sung by a quartet-Helmuth Spitzer, Alvin Spitzer, Gideon Kirschenmann and Arthur Bender with Mrs. Gideon Kirschenmann playing the piano accompaniment.

The honorary pallbearers were Philip Spitzer, John Spitzer, Wm. Wittmeier, Robert Mayer, Albert Mayer, and H. A. Hoffman. The active pallbearers were Larry Perman, Lynn Perman, Wesley Perman, Norman Perman, Glenn Brown, and Darrel Brown. Burial was in the Perman family cemetery southeast of Streeter with the Haut Funeral Home of Gackle in charge of arrangements.

Out of state relatives attending were Mrs. George Dorr, Bakersfield, Calif., and Miss Shirley Perman, Portland, Oregon.

Erik Daniel Peterson, 92, Jamestown, died Feb. 28, 2007, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown.

Mr. Peterson was born Dec. 11, 1914, at Stockholm, Sweden, the son of Gunner and Anna (Danielson) Peterson. He came to the United States with his parents when he was 7 years old. He attended Jamestown schools and graduated from Jamestown College in 1937 with a math major. He attended the University of Minnesota for one semester before transferring to the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, where he earned a civil engineering degree in 1939. He married Inez Iverson in 1939. She died in 1967. He worked at Wheaton, Minn., with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and then worked for the State Highway Department in North Dakota. He moved to Detroit, Mich., in 1941, and then to Joliet, Ill., to work as an assistant engineer, inspecting construction work. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1944. He attended Princeton University Indoctrination School, General Ord. School at the Navy Yard, Washington, D.C., and Gunnery Mechanical School in Pontiac, Mich.. He was commissioned gunnery officer on the USS ISM 195 at Princeton, N.J. He served in the South Pacific, where his ship was sunk by a Japanese attack. He received a Bronze Star medal. He was honorably discharged in April 1946. He returned to Jamestown and served as city engineer from 1945 to 1958. He then served the State Hospital as chief engineer from 1958 to 1980. He married Verna Krueger Moser in 1979. He was a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, El Zagal Temple Shriners, American Public Works Association and the Elks, and a member of NDPEA, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; a daughter, Dianne (Bruce) Ohland, Pequot Lakes, Minn.; a stepson, LeRoy (Gloria) Moser, Jamestown; a stepdaughter, Brenda Moser Deery, Jamestown; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. John Syvertson officiating. Arrangements by Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Albert Pfaff, 85, Jud, N.D., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, N.D.

Mr. Pfaff was born Jan. 7, 1921, on the family farm near Jud, the son of Henry and Lentina (Fode) Pfaff. He grew up and received his elementary education at Bluebird Township (North Dakota) Country School and helped on the family farm. He married Viola Fregien on June 26, 1946, in Gackle, N.D. They lived on the family farm and he farmed with his father until his father’s death in 1968. He continued to farm until he retired in 1986. They then moved to Jud. He was a member of United Church of Christ, Jud, where he was a janitor, member of the choir and served as trustee and treasurer. He also was a charter member of the Jud Lions.

He is survived by his wife, LaMoure; two sons, Delvin (Karen), LaMoure, and Arlyn (Rhonda), Jud; a sister-in-law, Anna Pfaff, Jud; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Melvin; a sister, Anna; and a granddaughter.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rev. Joan Swanson officiating.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Haut Funeral Homes, Jamestown.

Esther Pfaff, 77, LaMoure, N.D., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2007, at St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure.

Esther Pfaff was born July 5, 1930, near Fredonia, N.D., the daughter of Samuel and Lydia (Rott) Pfaff. She grew up and attended school in the area. She moved with her family to a farm near Kulm, N.D., where they lived until the early 1960s. She then moved with her mother to a farm north of LaMoure. She moved to St. Rose Care Center on Dec. 17, 1981. She enjoyed raising poultry, gardening, reading cookbooks, clipping recipes, reading the newspaper and the outdoors.

She is survived by a brother, Ervin, LaMoure; a sister, Edna Richards, Aberdeen, S.D.; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Pfaff, Marion, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jacob and Matt; and four sisters, Lela Edinger, Mary Templin, Alvina McDonagh and Leona Utecht.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Dahlstrom Funeral Home Chapel, LaMoure, with the Rev. Susan Christian officiating.
Visitation: one hour before the service, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure.
Burial: Berlin Baptist Church Cemetery, rural Fredonia.

George Pfaff, 87, Valley City, N.D., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.

Mr. Pfaff was born May 7, 1914, in Eugene, Ore., the son of John and Caroline (Brahmar) Pfaff. He move with his family at a young age near Litchville, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. After finishing his education he started working for area farmers. He married Edith Thornberg on July 26, 1939, in Valley City. They farmed in Green Township near Valley City. She died June 2, 1966. He moved to Litchville in 1966 and in 1977 he moved to Valley City. He married Edna Kraft Twiet on June 4, 1977, in Valley City. He worked at the Sunset 66 gas station in Valley City until retiring in 1980.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Darrel (Starlene), West Fargo, N.D., Ron (Martha), Litchville, and Mike, Arizona; Four daughters, Mavis (Richard) Pritzkau, Bakersfield, Calif., Nancy (Herb) Elmore, Eureka, Mont., Debbie Pfaff, Ogden, Utah, and Mary Ertelt, Valley City; a brother, Kenneth (Emogene), Litchville; a sister, Irene (Walt) Frisk, Everett, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; parents; two sons and numerous brothers and sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, at Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, with the Rev. John Rieth officiating.
Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home and one hour before services.
Burial: Hillside Cemetery, Valley City.

Melvin Pfaff, 87, Jud, N.D., died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at the Central Dakota Village, Jamestown.

Mr. Pfaff was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Bluebird Township, south of Jud, N.D., the son of Henry and Leontina (Fode) Pfaff.   He grew up in the area and received his elementary education in the local rural school.  He married Anna Fregien on April 18, 1943, at Jud. They made their home on the Herman Schardin Farm. In 1949, they purchased their present farm from Levi Drenth. They resided on the farm until 1976, when they moved into Jud. He entered Central Dakota Village, Jamestown, on Dec. 16, 2004. He was member of Trinity Congregational UCC Church, Lions Club, senior citizens and the Jud Community Choir. He enjoyed farming, wood working and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sharon Kinzler, Jamestown, and Randa Pfaff, West Fargo, N.D.; three sons, Gary (Barbara), Holt, Mo., Darrel (Jean), Jud, and Wayne (Pam), Edgeley, N.D.; a brother, Albert (Viola), Jud; a sister, Anna Mickelson, Edgeley; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Wallace Kinzler.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Trinity Congregational United Church of Christ, Jud, with the Rev. Barbary Murray officiating.
Prayer service: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
Burial: Congregational Cemetery, Jud.

Arlene Pfarr, 67, St. Onge, S.D., died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at her home.

Arlene A. Schweitzer was born May 21, 1937, in Gackle, N.D., the daughter of Fred and Alice (Kinsler) Schweitzer. She grew up and attended school in Gackle and graduated from Cleveland (N.D.) High School. She married Eugene Pfarr on July 9, 1955, in Jamestown. They later remarried at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Lead, S.D. They lived in Golden Gate, S.D., until September 1977, when they moved to St. Onge. She worked at St. Onge Sale Barn and St. Onge Store. She enjoyed bike riding and gardening.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Randy (Joyce), Deadwood, S.D., and Allan (Nancy Benfit) and Robert (Andree "Andi"), both Spearfish, S.D.; three brothers, Leo, Bismarck, N.D., Howard, St. Onge, and Curtis, Lead; a sister, Shirley Perrett, Marshall, Wis.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Services: private family service will be held following cremation. Arrangements by Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home, Spearfish.

Alfred Podoll Services Held

Alfred Gust Podoll, 42, longtime resident of the Alfred-Jud Community was found dead on Tuesday afternoon December 15, 1964 at his residence in Alfred. Dr. W. A. Hill, Kulm, North Dakota, the LaMoure County Coroner reported Mr. Podoll apparently died on Sunday December 13, 1964 due to a chronic illness.

Mr. Podoll was born October 18, 1922 at Columbia, South Dakota, the son of Karl Podoll and Johanna Odebralki Podoll. At the age of one year he came with his parents to the Jud vicinity. He attended the local rural schools and grew to manhood in the Jud Community where the family farmed.

He and Anna Madcke were married on March 1, 1943 at LaMoure, North Dakota. Mr. Podoll enlisted in the Armed Forces at Fort Snelling, Minn. on February 7, 1945 and served with the 354 Army Air Force Base Unit, serving overseas in the Pacific Theater from October 10, 1945 to April 23, 1946. He was discharged with the rank of private first class on July 23, 1946 at Fort Sherian, Ill.

Following the discharge he returned to Alfred. He worked as a machine operator in road construction until following an operation in 1958 he discontinued heavy work.

Survivors include his widow, on son Ervin Duane Podoll, Minneapolis, Minn., one daughter Mary Jane Podoll, Jamestown, N.D., one grandson Ervin Duane Podoll, Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., his parents Mr. and Mrs. Karl Podoll, Jud, N.D., five brothers Orville, Greeley, Colo., Wildemar, Edgeley, N.D., Donald, Rullett, Wyo., Harold and Lawrence, Jud, N.D., six sisters, Delina (Mr. Robert Brady), Mary Ann (Mrs. Duane Elhard), Adeline, Adelete, Betty, and Barbara, all of Jud, N.D.

The funeral services was held on Monday December 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Assembly of God Church in Alfred with Rev. John F. Mertz, pastor of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle officiating. Burial was in the Alfred Cemetery at Alfred.

William Franklin Podoll, 88, Fullerton, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, N.D.

Mr. Podoll was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Jud, N.D. He grew up and attended school in the Nortonville, N.D. area. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Utah in the 1930s, working as a cook. He later returned to North Dakota and worked in the poultry department at North Dakota State University. He also served on the North Dakota Poultry Improvement Board in Bismarck. He also worked at the Land O’Lakes Hatchery in Valley City, N.D. He married Irene Hanning June 5, 1949, in Jamestown, N.D. They moved to a farm near LaMoure in 1953, where they farmed and raised turkeys until retiring in 1974. He entered the care center in 1999.

He is survived by his wife; four sons, Donald (Candace), Adrian, N.D., David, Daniel (Theresa), both Fullerton, Michael (Amy), Marion, Iowa; a daughter, Marjorie Podoll, Verona, N.D.; three brothers, Walter, Jamestown, Charles (June), LaMoure, Earl (Janice), Edgeley, N.D.; two sisters, Edna Johnson, Riverside, Calif., Leona Egstad, Grand Forks, N.D.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation: Today from 2-8 in Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure.
Funeral: Thursday at 2 in First Presbyterian Church, LaMoure
Burial: Rosehill Cemetery, LaMoure.

Her grandparents, aunts and uncles preceded her in death.

Wendy was born January 24, 1952 in Streeter, North Dakota, the daughter of Melvin and Joyce Useldinger Rivinius. She married Randy Portz on January 3, 1986 in Cedar Rapids. Wendy graduated from Mt Mercy Collage with a B.A. degree. She was employed with Alliant Energy as Director Executive & Board Compensation for 35 years. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and on the Board of Directors for the Cedar Rapids Symphony. Wendy had a passion for shopping and a great love for animals.

Leonard Poykko, 83, Gackle, N.D., died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Medcenter One, Bismarck, N.D.

Mr. Poykko was born on March 18, 1918, at Gackle, the son of Charlie and Leena (Karjalainen) Poykko. He received his elementary education in the local rural school in Finn Township and grew up in the area. He lived and farmed on the same farm his father homesteaded. He moved into Gackle in 1982. He was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church. He enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica, and fishing.

He is survived by a brother, Wesley (Joyce), Gackle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. David Winterfeldt officiating.
Prayer service: 7:30 p.m. today, Haut Funeral Homes, Gackle.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial: Saarie Cemetery, south of Gackle.

Lydia Poykko, 88, Wishek, N.D., died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, in Wishek Retirement Home.

Ms. Poykko was born Sept. 18, 1908, in Gackle, N.D., where she grew up and attended high school. She graduated from Interstate Business College, Fargo, in 1926. Following graduation she worked for First State Bank, Gackle. In 1942 she moved to Seattle, where she worked for Boeing Air Craft. She returned to Gackle. In 1996 she entered Wishek Retirement Home.

She is survived by two brothers, Leonard and Wesley (Joyce), both Gackle.

Visitation: Today from noon to 9, Saturday from 9 to 9 and Sunday from 9 to 9 ...

Sadie K. Poykko of Auburn died April 30, 2002, in Auburn. She was 94.

Born April 30, 1908, in Gackle, N.D., she lived in Auburn for 18 years.

She retired as an office manager in the insurance business. She enjoyed her cat, gardening and working crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her sisters, Melba Vaughn of Auburn and Sylvia Wirkkunen of SeaTac.

At her request, no service will be held.
Memorials may be made to University of Washington School of Medicine.

Wesley “Wes” Poykko, 82, Gackle, N.D., died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, N.D.

Mr. Poykko was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Logan County, North Dakota, the son of Charlie and Leena (Karjalainen) Poykko. He received his elementary education in the rural schools near Gackle and graduated from Gackle High School in 1941. He was employed by the U.S. government at the Bremerton Naval Yards as an electrician from 1941 to 1945. He entered the U.S. Army on April 5, 1945, at Fort Lewis, Wash. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and Japan and was discharged Nov. 28, 1946, with the rank of staff sergeant. He attended North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, graduating in electrical trades in 1947. His first job was as a meter repairman for MDU Power in Bismarck. He received his master electrician’s license in 1949 and began commercial and residential electrical installations in Gackle and the surrounding area. He married Joyce Nordahl on July 20, 1952, at Hastings, N.D. In 1956 they moved to Winston, Ore. They returned to Gackle in 1961 when he became the owner of Mallard Lanes until he retired in 1988. He also operated Gackle Electric from 1961-1992. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church , Gackle Lions, Gackle Country Club, Gackle Fire Department, Gackle Wildlife Club and Mayer-Morlock American Legion, all Gackle, and the North Dakota Electrical Contractors Association and Bowling Proprietors Association. He was also the district chairman of the American Legion Baseball N.D. District 8 and church councilman. He was active with Gackle baseball teams and enjoyed bowling, winning the North Dakota Singles Championship in 1966 and American Legion Bowling in 1972.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Julie Post, Lincoln, Neb.; a son, Brian (Sue), Grand Forks, N.D.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. Russ Pollock officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Haut Funeral Homes, Gackle.

Bernard Paul Pratschner, 80, Vista, Calif., died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center, Oceanside, Calif.

Mr. Pratschner was born Feb. 23, 1926, the son of John and Helena Pratschner. He grew up on the family farm near Jud, N.D. He attended elementary school at Raney Township #1 (North Dakota) and graduated from Jud High School in 1943. In April 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he trained as a medic. He served in the European Theater in World War II in England, Scotland and Germany. He was discharged in 1946. He attended Jamestown College for one year. In 1950, he graduated from Ellendale (N.D.) State Normal and Industrial School with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial arts. He married Mary Jane Trei on June 27, 1949. He taught at Forbes High School and coached basketball there from 1953-1963. In 1963, they moved to Vista where he taught at Fallbrook High School. In 1965, he began working for Deutsch Co., Oceanside, as a manufacturing engineer and was employed there for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife; nine children; three brothers, Joseph, Mandan, N.D., and Leo and Clarence, Oakes, N.D.; a sister, Helen Geinert, Nortonville, N.D.; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: held Dec. 15, Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista, with the Rev. Ron Arnold officiating.
Inurnment: Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego.

VISTA - Bernard Paul Pratschner, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

Born Feb. 23, 1926, in Jud, N.D., he lived in Vista for 43 years.

He was a manufacturing engineer for Deutsch for 26 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a high school teacher for 12 years. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista. He enjoyed his family.

Mr. Pratschner is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Pratschner of Vista; sons and daughters-in-law Dan and Denise Pratschner of Gustavus, Alaska, Jamie and Carmen Pratschner of Vista, Steve and Krista Pratschner of San Marcos, David and Kerri Pratschner of Camptonville, Brian and Linda Pratschner of Mechanicsville, Md., and Michael and Jennifer Pratschner of Carlsbad; daughters Paulette Pratschner of Ashland, Ore., Mary Beth DiPaolo of Leominster, Mass., and Kathy Pratschner of Vista; brothers Joe Pratschner, Leo Pratschner and Clarence Pratschner, all of North Dakota; sister Helen Geinert of North Dakota; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel. A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Ron Arnold officiating. Private inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on Point Loma in San Diego is planned.

Francis Pratschner, 77, 89 27th Ave. N., Fargo, N.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, in the LaMoure (N.D.) Nursing Home. Mr. Pratschner was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Jamestown, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Jud, N.D. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Colorado and North Dakota before joining the U.S. Army. He served during World War II. Following his military service, he returned to Jud where he married Fern A. Yetterboe Oct. 3, 1946. They moved to Valley City, N.D., where he worked as a mechanic. They later moved to Kulm, N.D., where he worked for the Farmers Union. They moved to Dilworth where he owned a Standard Oil station. In 1968, they moved to Fargo where he worked for O'Day Equipment Co. until he retired in 1980. ...

Gordon Yetterboe, 79, Gackle, N.D., died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Yetterboe was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Jud, N.D., where he grew up and attended school. Lorraine D. Pratschner, 75, LaMoure, N.D., formerly Casselton, N.D., died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure. Lorraine D. Yetterboe was born March 29, 1923, near Nortonville, N.D., where she grew up and attended school. She worked for her sister and her sister's family on a farm near Nortonville before moving to Portland, Ore., for two years. She then returned to the Nortonville area. On Oct. 3, 1946, she married John Pratschner in Edgeley, N.D. They lived in Fredonia, N.D., until 1951, when they moved to Casselton. She baby-sat for many families. He died in 1997. Devolt "Dave" Presler, 76, of rural Vergas, died on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at his home.

Dave Presler, the son of Reinhold and Odelia (Kreiger) Presler, was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Gackle, N.D. He attended country school near Gackle, and helped on the family farm. During the Korean War, Dave served in the U.S. Army, from February 1952 to November 1953. After his discharge, Dave moved to Fargo for a short time. On Dec. 19, 1953, Dave married Nona E. Rudd in Dilworth. After their marriage Dave and Nona lived in Fargo, before moving to rural Vergas. Dave farmed and also worked for Roy Dunn at Dunvilla Resort for several summers. Nona died in January 1991. Dave resided at the home place from 1954 to the present time.

He enjoyed collecting and listening to country music.

Dave is survived by his two sons, Daniel Lee Presler of Vergas and Darryl Jay Presler of Pelican Rapids; daughter, Karol (Steven) Berg of Pelican Rapids; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Ray (Belva) Presler of Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Nona; infant daughter; and three brothers, Melvin, Herbert and Henry Presler.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, and resume for one hour prior to the start of services Saturday at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids, with the Rev. Dale Pepelnjak officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Pelican Rapids, with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5252 of Pelican Rapids.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids.

Herbert Reinhold Presler, 88, Alvin, Texas, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Alvin Health Care Center, Alvin.

Mr. Presler was born Aug. 20, 1918, in rural Gackle, N.D., the son of Reinholt and Otelia (Krieger) Presler. He grew up and attended the area country school through the seventh grade. He entered the U.S. Army in June 1941, and served in Europe. He was discharged in August 1945. He married Edna Gumke on June 26, 1942, at the Congregational Parsonage in Gackle. He farmed the family farm for nine years. They then moved to Fredonia, N.D., where he worked as a blacksmith. In December 1963, they moved to Texas, where he was employed by Galveston shipyard for six years. He then worked for G.A. Mosites as a steel tank fabricator welder. He retired July 1, 1982. He was a member of Landsmark Missionary Baptist Church, Texas City, Texas. He enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by two daughters, Vera (Donald) Neuman, Alvin, and Verna (Buddy) Arnold, Manvel, Texas; two sons, Ronald (Patsy), Santa Fe, Texas, and Kenneth (Betsy), Alvin; two brothers, Ray, Texas, and Devolt, Minnesota; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; three infant sons, Floyd, Gene and Dale; an infant daughter, Betty; his parents; two brothers, Henry and Melvin; and a great-grandson, Aaron Early.

Services: held Tuesday, Scott Funeral Home, Alvin.
Burial: Hayes Grace Memorial Cemetery, Hitchcock, Texas.

Mathilda Pritchett, 84, Portland, Ore., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003.

Mathilda Schaffer was born on April 7, 1918, at Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Joseph and Rose Schaffer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Streeter. She graduated from Streeter High School and Central Dakota Commercial College, Jamestown. From 1939-1945 she worked at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown. In 1950 she moved to Portland. She worked for Churchill Tours for many years and traveled to Japan and Europe. She married James L. Pritchett on Aug. 14, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church. He died on Dec. 29, 1977. In 1987 she retired from Electro-Scientific Industries as an accountant. During her retirement years, she volunteered her accounting and bookkeeping skills as the treasurer at Zion Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Home Economy Center. She lived in a foster care home for the last two years, cared for by Melissa Morrow. She enjoyed flowers.

She is survived by four sisters, Ella Remmick, Battle Ground, Wash., Esther Kleven, Hazel Dell, Wash., Alida Buck, Wishek, N.D., and Edna Joss, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and three stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Edward, Herbert and Arthur.

Graveside services: held Jan. 11, Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

Gwen Bernice Black Pritzkau
1932 ~ 2006

In loving memory of our beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Gwen was born on Sept. 7, 1932 to Ward Black and Hilda B. Marshall in Salina, Utah. She grew up in Salt Lake City where she met and married Julius Pritzkau in 1948. Being a wife, mother and grandmother was her greatest joy. Gwen spent her entire life serving and loving her family and friends.

Gwen retired from the Salt Lake County library and was a co-founder of the Glueckstal Colony Research Assoc. (GCRA). Through her faithful and tireless efforts in GR research she has touched thousands of lives and will be remembered by many.

Survived by husband, Julius; eight children, Kathy (Mike) Brixey, Kyle, Lyle, Lori, Diann Bailey, Julie (Clark) Bleazard, Jolene (Brent) Dotson and Shelley Pritzkau; 19 Grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A Private Service to celebrate her life will be held for the family and close friends at Broomhead Funeral Home 12600 So. 2200 W., Thursday, May 4th, 11:00 a.m.

She will be laid to rest at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 So. 1700 W.

Lydia Pritzkau, 96, Arthur, N.D., died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center, Arthur.

Lydia Reich was born Jan. 17, 1906, at the family farm home northeast of Ashley, N.D., the daughter of Gottlieb and Katherina (Kussmaul) Reich. She attended the local rural school and grew up in the vicinity. She married John Pritzkau Dec. 19, 1925, at Napoleon, N.D. They lived on a farm 10 miles east of Napoleon. In 1954 they moved into Napoleon. She worked at Irene's Cafe. He died in 1956. She worked at Wurl's Cafe until 1962. She moved to Gackle, N.D., where she worked at LaVonne's Cafe until retiring. In 1994 she moved in with her children. In March 2001 she entered Good Samaritan Center, Arthur. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Gackle, and Baptist Ladies Aid.

She is survived by four sons, Julius (Gwen), Riverton, Utah, Clifton (Louisa Mae), Tooele, Utah, Richard (Mavis), Bakersfield, Calif., and James (Linda), Sidney, Mont.; two daughters, LaVerne (Jim) Calverley, Farmington, Minn., and Donna (Jack) Turner, Hunter, N.D.; 23 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sons, a daughter, two brothers and eight sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, [Feb 8, 2002] Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. Roger Monson officiating.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Haut Funeral Homes, Gackle.
