Tansley RUST & John BERRY

Tansley RUST & John BERRY

Tansley RUST is a very interesting female as she appears to have married 2 brothers!

She was baptised 8 July 1798 at Upwell St Peter's Church; the 4th child and 3rd daughter of
    William RUST and Susannah TANSLEY.

Her 1st husband was Richard BERRY; they married at Wisbech St Peter's in 1825; but unfortunately,
Richard died in 1828 aged 30, and was buried at Wisbech St Peter's Church, leaving Tansley with 2
    young sons:
Richard born Nth Brink, Wisbech 1826 baptised 1826 Wisbech, St Peter's
William born Nth Brink, Wisbech 1827 baptised 1827 Wisbech St Peter's
Around 1830/31, she marries Richard's elder brother, John; but to date I haven't traced this marriage. Tansley and John's children are:
Hannah born 6 March 1832 baptised 10 April 1832 Upwell St Peter's
Susannah born 1834 baptised 6 April 1834 Upwell St Peter's
John born 1836 baptised 5 June 1836 Upwell St Peter's
On Hannah & Susannah's baptism entries, John's occupation is given as Publican; but by John's baptism in 1836, he is a Farmer. On the 1841 U.K. Census, John is Publican in Brimstone Hill at "The Crown" on the 16ft Bank at the top of Crown Drove: HO 107/78/21 - Upwell, Cambs Folio 5B
John BERRY Age 45 Publican bn in Cambs = Y
Tansley BERRY Age 40 bn in Cambs = N
Richard BERRY Age 15 bn in Cambs = Y
Hannah BERRY Age 9 bn in Cambs = Y
Susan BERRY Age 7 bn in Cambs = Y
John BERRY Age 5 bn in Cambs = Y

But John had died before the 1851 census. October 2001 - found John's Burial entry in Upwell Burial Register at Fenland Museum - he was buried at St Peter's Church on 19 April 1844, aged 49, after a Coroner's Inquest.

1851 U.K. Census - age 52, widowed, & Innkeeper at "The Crown Inn", 16ft Bank, Brimstone Hill. HO 107/1767 Upwell, Cambs. Folio 507b, Schedule 13:
Tansley BERRY W Age 52 Inn Keeper bn IofE - Upwell
Wm BERRY Son Age 23 Agricultural Labourer bn Nth Brink, Wisbech
Hannah BERRY Daur Age 19 bn IofE - Upwell
John BERRY Son Age 14 Agricultural Labourer bn IofE - Upwell
Tansley BERRY Grand daughter Age 3 bn IofE - Upwell
And, no, the young Tansley is not Hannah's daughter! Her parents are Richard and Frances BERRY, Tansley's son and daughter-in-law who live next door and farm 12 acres.

On the 1871 U.K. Census, Tansley has her married daughter Hannah and her family living with her at "The Rose & Crown",Crown Drove, 16ft Bank, Christchurch, nr Upwell:
Tansley BERRY Widow Age 72 Inn Keeper/Farms 4 acres bn Upwell, Norfolk

Hannah CAWTHORN Wife Age 38 bn Upwell, Cambs
John Son Age 6 Scholar bn Upwell, Cambs

N.B. Upwell in most cases means Brimstone Hill before 1865 & Christchurch after 1865 when the church was built. Christchurch then, as now, is covered by the Sub-Registration district of Upwell.

In 1881, Tansley is still the Inn keeper, aged 84; + George & Hannah are still living at the pub - only this time it's called "The Crown Inn":

From Family Bible pages - Tansley BERRY died 3rd May 1886, aged 89 years. I have been unable to find Tansley's place of burial; she's not at Christchurch or at Upwell St Peter's with John. She may be at Wisbech with Richard, or at Upwell Baptist Chapel with other Non-Conformist members of my family!
