John CAWTHORN & Rachel Ann RUSSELL of Christchurch
John CAWTHORN & Rachel Ann RUSSELL
My Great Grandfather, John CAWTHORN, 1st child of George & Hannah was born 3 August 1864 - probably at
The Crown Inn, Crown Drove, Christchurch; the pub run by his grandmother, Tansley BERRY.
John married Rachel Ann RUSSELL, youngest daughter of John RUSSELL and Ann HIAM on 30 October 1889 at
Christchurch Parish Church. They had only one child:
Walter Russell

John was the manager of the "Co-op" - the village shop, taking over from his father. He bought the business when
the Co-op decided to close it - when?
On the 1891 U.K. Census, John was the Enmumerator for Christchurch along with his father, George.
John's legacy to Christchurch is a set of postcard views of Christchurch, which he published around 1905.
There are views of the Methodist Chapel, Church Road, Tipps End Road with the "Farmer's Boy", Upwell Road,
Green Drove with "The Dun Cow", the Rectory and the Parish Church.
The earliest postmark is 1909. To see the postcards, go to Christchurch History Notes
and to read the messages, go here.
In the 1896, 1900, 1904 & 1908 Kelly's Directory of Cambridgeshire, John is listed as Grocer & Draper.
By 1925 Kelly's, John is just a grocer.
John died 21 June 1933 and was buried in the churchyard on 26 June 1933.
Rachel Ann died 4 December 1943 and was buried with John on 18 December 1943.
