In St Peter's Church, Upwell, on the South transept wall, there is a brass memorial plaque to the men of Upwell who lost their lives in the Great War - I first saw this in March, 2000. The very first name is John Cawthorn Allen, died 1 February 1919. I checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website and found the following: 39408 Pte, 35th Royal Fusiliers, Labour Corps. Died 1-2-19, age 26. Son of Cauthorn and Mamy Allen, Upwell. Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 2, Somme, France. Even the CWGC can't get the spelling right. BUT is he one of my CAWTHORNS, as I do have a few loose ends to tie up.
