15 June 2001 - When looking for CAWTHORN headstones last year [at Upwell], was quite shocked to find piles and piles of headstones laid one on top of the other in straggley heaps round the back of bushes and covered in ivy, etc. i.e around the lower grassy area of the picture above. The old part of the churchyard is in a dreadful condition - overgrown, and you're in great danger in some places of losing your foot down a gaping hole! Needless to say, Dad & I couldn't find what we were looking for and came away very disappointed. This is one reason why I've tried to initiate an MI Transcription project in my home village of Christchurch - either as a Community Village Project or through the Fenland Family History Society. June 2004 - As it turns out, I have only one CAWTHORN burial at Upwell St. Peter's, but quite a few SCOTTs and BERRYs. Just by way of contrast, in the U.S.A. virtually every graveyard is protected, even the small private ones. They are considered to be public parks. The large Victorian cemeteries to be found in any large city are on the National Register of Historic Places - Source: Susan Eckert, Rochester, NY, USA - email of 14 June 2001.
