Bisley 1837
BISLEY or BISLEIGH is three and a half miles east from Stroud, eight miles north-west from Cirencester, and nine miles south by east from the city of Gloucester, contained in 1831, 5896 inhabitants, including the hamlets of Trougham, Steanbridge, Bidfield, Tunley, and Daneway. The chapelry of Chalford, is also partly in this parish and partly in that of Minchinhampton. The annual value of assessed property in 1815 was 7683l. Bisley has no regular market, but fairs are held on May 4th and November 12th for cattle, sheep and horses. The town in supported by the clothing trade which is carried on very largely in the surrounding district; on the banks of the river Stroud are numerous mills employed in the manufacture of woollen-cloth for the army. The first clothing mill in this part of the country was erected at Todgmore Bottom, in this parish. The church dedicated to All Saints is a spacious structure, and being situated on am eminence, its spire may be seen for many miles distant. The living is a vicarage, value 527l. per annum, in the patronage of the crown. Here is a free school for boys, and a benefaction for clothing six widows. The Thames and Severn canal passes through this parish, on the verge of which, at Sapperton Hill, it enters a tunnel of solid masonry two miles and a half in length. Bisley is in the Stroud union. Miserden Park is the seat of Sir Edward Bayntun Sandys, Bart, it is about seven miles in circumference, and the grounds are richly wooded with noble beeches; the mansion, an ancient stone edifice, contains a series of family portraits.Name, Residence, & Profession
