(includes Cinderford and Whiteclift)
A market-town and chapelry in the parish of Newland, Hundred of St. Briavell's, 19 miles from Gloucester, and 124 from London, containing 1804 inhabitants. The market is on Friday, and fairs are held on June 20th for wool, and 24th Nov. for cattle. The market-house was rebuilt in 1679, towards which Charles II. contributed 50l. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the subdeaconry of Hereford and diocese of Gloucester, endowed with 200l. private benefaction, 600l. royal bounty, and 1200l. parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Bishop of Gloucester. A chapel was rebuilt in the reign of Queen Anne, who contributed 300l. towards its erection, and is dedicated to All Saints. Vestiges of King Offa's dyke may be distinctly traced in some parts of the town.
