Didmarton 1876
DIDMARTON is a parish and village in Tetbury union, containing, by the census of 1861, 92, and in 1871, 77 inhabitants, and 719 acres; in the deanery of Hawkesbury, archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, the upper division of Grumbalds Ash hundred, West Gloucestershire; 6 miles south-west from Tetbury, 10 north-east from Yate Station on the Bristol and Birmingham Railway, 13 south-west from Tetbury Road Station, and 17 north-east from Bath, near the borders of the county. The River Avon rises in this parish. The rectory, to which is annexed that of Oldbury-on-the-Hill, is valued at £141 18s. per annum, with residence and 34 acres of glebe land, and is in the incumbency of the Rev. George Frederick Le Mesurier, M.A., and the patronage of the Duke of Beaufort. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence, is in the Early English style, and consists of nave, chancel, and north aisle; with a wooden bell turret containing a bell and clock. It is now disused, except for mortuary purposes, and a new church, dedicated to St. Michael, has been erected for the use of this place and Oldbury-on-the-Hill. There is a school for children of both sexes, which is also used for the adjoining parish of Oldbury-on-the-Hill. The poor have charities producing about £4 per annum. The Duke of Beaufort is lord of the manor and chief land owner. The rateable value of this parish is £1067.
