Dursley 1876
DURSLEY is a market town and parish, the principal of the union to which it gives the name, containing, by the census of 1861, 2477, and in 1871, 2413 inhabitants, and 708 acres; in the deanery of Dursley, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, West Gloucestershire, the principal polling place for that division of the County, from whence the returns of the Knights of the Shire are made; forming the terminus of a branch from the Midland Railway, at Coaley Junction; 3 miles south-east from Berkeley Road Station, 6 north from Wotton-under-Edge, 15 south-west from Gloucester, 22 south-west from Cheltenham, and 110 from London, on the banks of the small river Cane. It was mentioned in the Doomsday Survey, and a monastry was formerly in existence here. The government of the town in vested in a bailiff and aldermen; the jury at the annual court leet of the Right Hon. Thomas Henry Sutton Estcourt Sotheron Estcourt, who is lord of the manor, present three names, from whom the bailiff is chosen, who, on the fulfilment of his year of office, becomes an alderman. The County magistrates hold petty sessions every third Monday, at the Town Hall, which with the market house and market tolls were purchased by Henry Vizard, Esq., and presented to the town, thus making the place toll-free. There is a statue of Queen Anne on the Town Hall. The Castle, which is now in ruins, was formerly the seat of the Earls of Berkeley; and this place gives the second title, Viscount Dursley, to that earldom. The neighbourhood is noted for quarries of "tufa" or "puff" stone, which, when first dug, is very soft and easily worked by the mason, but hardens by exposure to the weather and becomes very durable; a portion of Berkeley Castle is built with it. Edward Fox, who was created Bishop of hereford in 1535, one of the great supporters of the Reformation, was a native of this town. The rectory in the incumbency of the Rev. George Madan, M.A., Rural Dean and Hon. Canon of Bristol, is valued at £300 per annum, with residence, and is in the patronage of the Bishop of the diocese; it was annexed to the archdeaconry of Gloucester from a period previous to the Reformation, but was separated in 1865. The church is an ancient edifice, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and a chapel forming the east end of the south aisle, built by Thomas Tanner, a justice of the peace in the reign of Henry VI., south porch with parvise over it, and tower containing a peal of eight bells, with clock and chimes. Historians differ as to the dedication of this church, but the most probable account is that the church itself is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the north aisle to the Virgin Mary, and Tanner's Chapel, to St. James. It was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, west and south walls, and south porch, the chancel was extended about 25 feet, and the walls raised so as to form a clerestory, in 1866. The tower was rebuilt in 1709, the old spire having fallen in 1699. The Independents, Plymouth Brethren, and Wesleyans have places of worship here, the chapel of the first named, which is called the Whitfield Tabernacle, has recently been restored, and a new vestibule placed in front, which has considerable improved its appearance. A new roof and windows have also been added, the whole cost being about £400, which has been raised by voluntary contribution; it is also intended to restore the interior. There is a Literary Association and Reading Room in Long Street, and the good Templars' and Mechanics' Institute, was opened by the kindness of Mr. William Tilton, in one of his tooms in Parsonage Street, both of which are well supplied with the literature of the day. The Crystal Tepid Swimming Bath, erected my Mr. George Ayliffe, the proprietor of the "Old Bell" Hotel, is supplied with water from a beautiful spring called the "Broad Well," and contains from 50,000 to 60,000 gallons, which by the aid of steam is kept at the temperature of 64 degrees, and the depth varies from 3 and a half feet to 6 feet, so as to be equally safe to the learner, and deep and commodious for the expert swimmer. There is an extensive and excellent Benefit Society here, extending over a circuit of several miles, and divided into 25 districts; the Lord Lieutenant of the county is patron. There are almshouses for three aged men and the same number of women, which were given and endowed by Henry Vizard, Esq., in 1858. The market day is on a Thursday, and monthly markets are held the second Tuesday in each month. Cattle fairs are held on the 6th May and 4th December.
STINCHCOMBE HILL, which is covered with a fine hanging beech wood, and at the foot of which Dursley is situate, commands some magnificient views of the wurrounding country, including the vales of Gloucester and Berkeley, the Forest of Dean, and the Bristol Channel, with portions of Devonshire, Somersetshire, and Wales.
WOODMANCOTE is a hamlet, forming the south-eastern portion of the town being part and parcel of the parish. It contains a chapel-of-ease, dedicated to St. Mark, which is a plain cruciform building in the Early English style, and was erected in 1844 - a south aisle has been subsequently added. There is also an Endowed Grammar and Commercial School here. John Charles Bengough, Esq., is lord of the manor. The rateable value of this parish is £6358.
