Horfield 1876
HORFIELD is a parish and village in Clifton union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1746, and in 1871, 2985 inhabitants, and 1234 acres of land; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, the lower division of Berkeley hundred, West Gloucestershire, near to the Ashley Hill Station on the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway; 2 miles north from Bristol. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Henry Haistwell Hardy, M.A., is valued at £300 per annum, with residence, and is in the patronage of the Bishop of the diocese. The church is a neat edifice, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, with tower containing five bells; it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1847. There are National Schools for children and infants of both sexes. The poor have charitable bequests producing £1 11s. per annum. A portion of this parish, with Bishopston, was, in compliance with the wishes of the inhabitants, formed into a district for the purposes of the Local Government Act, by order of the Secretary of State, dated 17th May, 1866. The Infantry Barracks here is capable of quartering 500 soldiers, to which is also attached a Military School for their children, in which the rector celebrates divine service on a Sunday. Bishop Monk's Horfield Trustees are lords of the manor. The rateable value of this parish is £13,078.
