1822
Is a market town, pleasantly situated in a valley, in the county of Hereford, and immediatelly on the borders of Radnor, 150 miles from London, 20 from Hereford, 14 from Leominster, and six from Radnor. It once was particularly famed for narrow cloths, which were manufactured here to a considerable extent, and it is to be lamented it is not so now, for if it were only carried on even to a small extent, it would tend greatly to enhance the comfort and convenience of the town and neighbourhood. Glove making is carried on here to a small extent. Here is an iron foundry, employed by Messrs. John Meredith and Sons, which is the means of doing great service to the place. The rail road, which passes from the foundry to Brecon, and joins the canal at Newport, is also another great advantage, and offers great facility for the conveyance of certain articles of trade, which otherwise must be brought at an enormous freight. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is delightfully situated on an eminence; is an irregular pile, having a tower, and a spire of singular form, and is supposed to be upwards of 700 years old. The Rev. John Wall, A. M. vicar. There are two other places of worship for dissenters. Immediately close to the church is a free grammar school, founded by Lady Margaret Hawkins, in 1632. The Rev. John Bissell, B. D. master. Here is also a charity school for the education of females. Fairs, Wednesday before Easter, Whit-Monday, August 2nd, September 19th, and Wednesday before Old Michaelmas day. Market day is on Wednesday. The population is, according to the census in 1811, 859 females and 758 males, total 1617; and in 1821, 1009 females and 971 males, total 1980; being an increase in 10 years of 363.Post-Office - Richard Pugh, Post Master. The London mail arrives every day (Monday excepted) at half-past six in the evening, and is dispatched at a quarter past four in the morning. Mail arrives from all parts except London (from October to April) at half-past six in the evening; other months at six in the evening, and dispatched at four in the morning.
