NEWINGTON BAGPATH is a parish in Tetbury union, containing, by the census of 1861, 242, and in 1871, 223 inhabitants, and 2131 acres; in the deanery of Dursley, archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, upper division of Berkeley hundred, West Gloucestershire; 5 and a half miles east from Charfield Station, 17 south from Gloucester, 23 south-west from Cheltenham, and 106 from London. The rectory, with that of Kingscote attached, is valued at £500 per annum, with residence and 50 acres of land and is in the incumbency of the Rev. Alan Kingscote Cornwall, and the patronage of Colonel Kingscote. The church is an ancient edifice, in the Early English style, consisting of nave, chancel, and porch, with tower and one bell. There is a Church of England School for this parish, with Kingscote and Lasborough, with residence for the master, which was opened in November, 1871. Colonel Kingscote is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil. The poor have the interest of £50, which was left by Mr. John White, of Kingscote, which is distributed in bread at Christmas.
