TYTHERINGTON is a parish, including the tything or hamlet of ITCHINGTON, in Thornbury union, containing, by the census of 1861, 447, and in 1871, 523 inhabitants, and 2218 acres; in the deanery of Hawkesbury, archdeaconry of Bristol, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, Barton Regis hundred, West Gloucestershire; 2 and 1/2 miles south-east from Thornbury, on the branch line from thence to Yate, which has a station here, 4 miles west from Wickwar, 4 and 1/2 south-west from Charfield, 12 north from Bristol, 22 north-east from Bath, and 122 from London. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. William Henry M. Roberson, M. A., is valued at £300 per annum, with residence and 64 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of G. M. Taswell, Esq. The church is an ancient Gothic edifice, dedicated to St. James, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, porch, and an embattled tower containing a clock and five bells. The executors of the late Mrs. Priscilla Morris are owners of the manorial rights. A place called the Castle, in this parish, was formerly a Roman encampment. The rateable value of this parish is £4198.ITCHINGTON is a hamlet or tything of this parish, one mile from thence, in the hundred of Henbury.
