Given the importance of the Inauguration of the newly elected American President, George W. Bush, I thought I might try my hand a few tidbits on this month's theme: The Executive Branch.

As an ex-pat Canadian, I don't know much about U.S. politics from a first hand basis (e.g., I'd be at a loss to recite any passage from the U.S. Constitution, National Anthem, Battle Hymn of the Republic, etc.), however, from a bit of reading, here are a few items ... with a connection to the Cullinans and Cullinanes.

When I began my research in the 1980s (these were primarily letter-writing campaigns), one of my first responses was from a Virginia Cullinan from Washington, D.C. In her letter, she told me that her late husband was formerly Chief Deputy Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court. As you can imagine, I thought, "whip-dee-doo." Much to my surprise, her husband had a very remarkable career--one that was very close to life on the Beltway. Edmund P. Cullinan was, as I was told, a senior public servant in Washington.

Edmund P. Cullinan (1905-1971) was born in Dunkirk, Chatauqua County, New York - a city to the south of Buffalo on Lake Erie.
