What I would do would be to check the 1860 census, I don't have that for this group, and see if you can place a child named Corilla at the rough age of 7. This would be a child I think of a prior marriage. If you can, then I think you could say that these two are one and the same.

*NOTE* This email is inconsistent with 1870 census I have retrieved. The years are off quite a bit, see 1870 Montgomery County VA Census. It is also, I believe a census mistake for there are two Jacob Cromers with basically the same children, wife etc, just the names are a little off and the years are off... sounds like a double census was taken, and on the second one a person other than the father or mother gave inaccurate information to census taker.

According to information from Ina Mae Cromer, his birth date was May 15, 1918, and died July 14, 1950. Paper references he died on a Friday. July 14 1950 was a Friday. July 14, 1950 was also 32 years after his birth date provided by Ina Mae Cromer. These two sources seem to confirm birth, and death date of J Houston Cromer. It also shows that his mother died prior to 1950, his father survived beyond 1950, he was married, and had atleast 5 children. This also confirms that his brother Ralph Cromer died prior to 1950, thus helping to confirm given death date of Ralph.
