Photographs of the Russell Restaurant, Russell, Ontario, Canada
CHARLES DOBIE : LOCAL HISTORY
RUSSELL, ONTARIO
RUSSELL RESTAURANT, RUSSELL, ONTARIO, circa 1926

Staff in front of Russell Restaurant The 17 photos on this page were found in the same envelope and were purchased at a flea market in Smiths Falls, Ontario, summer of 2004. None of the people are identified, and indeed, the only identification is the "Russell Restaurant" sign. The people standing in front of the restaurant are obviously members of the staff, and the man in the suit (second photo) must be the owner.

The eight photos of people with automobiles seem to be connected to the owner of the Russell Restaurant, as he appears in the first automobile photo, leaning against the front of a roadster. The license plate in the third automobile photo is visible with a magnifying glass (but not on the screen) as a Quebec license of 1926.

The restaurant and automobile photos seem to have been taken at different times (the automobile photos are a little bit darker), but seem to be all from the 1920's. The sale of wine and beer in the restaurant surprised me -- didn't Canada have prohibition?

Does anyone know the makes and models of the cars below?
